Thread: PSA: None of the new RANGER traps are thrown!
Please let me in on something and tell me what the hell PSA means?
Personal sexual adventures?

If they are only ground-placeable, then there better not be a low limit on the amount we can place at a time or a huge cooldown timer to placing one. This means that we will go from using traps inside combat to using them before combat, and the only abilities so far that we use in combat are whatever modifiers we get. We don't have specials now, so I am thinking they are really pushing for combat preparation as our focus.
__________________________________________________________-I'd be surprised if there is not a fairly low limit or they'll be expensive/time consuming to make.
You run across a group of CL80 or higher Black Suns on Yavin (for example). Get just out of aggro range and lay down 20 or so of your best mines and kite them over them. Collect loot.
Or some similar scenario...
Recall that one of the trigger types is a remote trigger. Multiple traps would make it difficult to remote trigger each one. Of course, it's also possible that a single remote would trigger all traps at once (and this is really the only reasonable way it would work). In any case, it is unlikely that we'd be able to lay down a dozen traps around a general location and create our own little wall of fire....

I think Helios might disagree with ya here.

My favorite part is building a little mine field with my traps and putting various triggers on them and setting them off one by one. It's really a lot of fun! But then, I like explosions.

(I also want to be able to detonate mines on kreetles, but that's another issue altogether)
heh. that would be great. plant a bomb under a Kreetle...walk away.
/shout break MY mask scent will you?
/detonate
big explosion, kreetle flips over, dead.
Wouldn't the kreetle have agroed on you, making it impossible to set a trap for him, much less to walk away from him?
nah. imperial scientists apparently sprayed the kreetles with a chemical that makes them able to sense your level of combat skill, and keeps them docile if you're too dangerous for them. You don't even have to use mask scent anymore. but that doesn't mean I don't harbor serious hatred for them. i still wants to blow 'em up. Plus, you could play a game outside of new player cities. See how many kreetles you could kill with just one mine.

So much for a Ranger being wanted for a group 'still'. The way 99.99999 % of the people play in this chaoitic mind set of run'n up to missions and killing everything as fast as possible, noone is gonna wait on a Ranger to do their stuff.
Yep my double melee templet, tkm/swordsman guildie said to me the other day. quote "I had forgoten how slow it is to hunt with a Ranger." I am still not sure if it was a compliment or an insult. (I think he was really glad to get a break from the allways mad rush kinda play style that most do).
I think in terms of grind groups you're right. I think in terms of groups doing high end content, or PvP'ing, people will be more than happy to take the time for us to drop our handy IED's since it should be a nice way to initiate combat, or "soften them up".

I think it would indeed be a good idea to start calling them APD's or IED's. This is a new profession, and a new vernacular would help ease the transition.
Now that I'm thinking about it... I guess APD's would probably be the most appropriate term to use, since not all of the new "traps" may have explosive qualities to them, say maybe the kiminoan dart setup perhaps may "fling" the darts at the enemy... who knows, but APD is probably best.

I have only joined a grind group once, will never do it again. When I do group it is with friends, but the majority of people don't play that way.

Got another good one .
Will there be any Ranger traps that are thrown? There are a lot of assumptions that traps will still be thrown. I was given the impression, by the revamp doc, that all Ranger traps would be placed traps, and that, technically, Ranger traps will not be useable as combat progresses (but that the strategy would be placing them in the 'right' locations BEFORE combat and drawing the targets to them). Any enlightenment would appreciated .
You are correct. All of the new Ranger traps are placed with various kinds of triggers to determine how they are set off. (from Keldarin)
This is part of the reason I suggested in another thread that the Dev team add some additional traps outside of the four that are already in development. I really think we need some variety with them. Thrown, ground, dropped....let's get some ideas started.
