Thread: Let Smugglers Place Casinos in Cities

This issue is brought up from time to time in the Smuggler's forum... and its a neat idea..

A Speak Easy, during times of prohibition.. It would, sorta, work hand in hand with the cantina.

Ya.. I like it, but how many people would actually visit it? Hotels in starter cities have gambling machines.. but, how many times have you gone into a hotel?

thanks for taking this idea and running with it. i don't want to take credit for the casino idea, as it is probably far from original. This is a post i threw up a few days ago though, which promptly got lost at the bottom of the forums. here is my dream for casinos, take it or leave it

to quote myself:

Here is a conceptI have thought long and hard on. I know it may be some time before Elite-elite professions are introduced, but here is one that would stem off of the Smuggler profession. Professional Gambler. There are professional gamblers in the StarWars universe, look at Lando Clarissian. Here are a few things I have thought about:

Revamp the gambling system. ie: Make the lugjack machines and jubilee wheel visual (not text based as they are)

introduce sabacc

Casinos! these could either be a haven to go and play gambling oriented games for players only, but I would love to see it co-op. A themepark per se for gamblers. This would include NPCs to gamble against for static rewards ( a ship perhaps, after the space expansion?) It would also host an arena for players to play against players.

gambler missions. As gamblers advance through their profession, they gain access to more difficult gambling missions (ie: go to certain gambling house, bet an item given to you from npc, win, return voucher to npc, earn reward from npc)

Finally, here is how I envision a gambler's skill tree:

Novice gambler: ability to participate in high-stakes games (such as sabacc) +5 to luck +5 to cheating +5 to bluff +5 to charisma.

Sabacc I-IV this skill line grants the extended knowledge and skill to play the complicated game of sabacc and its variants. player gradually gains increases to the bluff skill modifier.

Luck I-IV player gradually gains increases to the luck skill modifier.

Cheating I-IV player gains increases in the ability to cheat undetected.(increases to cheat modifier)eventually learns to craft certain cheating devices and substances (ie:skifters) Player also gains increases in ability to outwit other players, bet items or credits one doesn't have, and chances to escape a facility when the game goes awry. If caught cheating, player recieves a TEF. In order to join a table, the gambler will have to join the gambling group. The TEFed character would only be attackable by players at his/her table.

Charisma I-IV player gains increases to the charisma skill modifier (ie has an easier time in dealing with sketchy people, has a good knowledge of "business skills" in the black market, etc.) slowly gains the ability to bet items instead of credits (such as pets, ships, etc) slowly is granted access to higher and higher stakes gambling arenas.

Master Gambler ability to place casino in player city +20 to all gambler skill modifiers, gains entry to the highest stakes gambling arenas, ability to craft an advaced cheating device.

If you like this idea, or have any suggestions, please let me know. Thank you.

This was posted on the Smuggler forum but as it relates to player cities I'll link to it here to see what people think. Another structure for player cities that could be placeable only by a master smuggler. I thought it was an interesting idea.

This is the kind of thing that's dependent on an idea of what the developers see as the reason for our existence. If it's gamblers, then it sounds good. If it's illicit transports, it doesn't really fit.

I'm working on the "vision" thing now.

It'sa critical distinctionbetween what we "envision," and what the Devs "envision," which, up to the present, are quite different visions. We've got a cadre of highly creative people here on this particular forum who can lend whatever development assistence the Devs are looking for from the player population. What we need most of all, is to know what in the world they envision our profession contributing to the game. We are currently labeled smuggler, but as I pointed out above, our skillset would most appropriately be entitled Criminal, or as another pointed out above, Scoundrel. If the Devs are going to hold firm on this, because it is too difficult to devise a true smuggling system that will be bothbalanced and also fun for us and those who would need us, then fine, and ideas such as a player casinoare important. If they're going to give us what we really want and develop a robust smuggling system, then fantastic, andwe can abandon these sorts of fanciful ideas.

However, since we've all typed till we're blue in the fingers about what we'd love to see from a smuggling system, and haven't gotten an iota ofdirect feedback from the Devs (except that it'd be really really hard), then all we have to goon is what we see in practice, which is that we're less smuggler and more a general criminal. Like rats in a maze, the more we get shocked for going down the wrong path, the less we're going to go down that path, and everytime we present an idea for a smuggling system, the Devs either ignore it outright, or poo poo it as being far too difficult to balance, code, and impliment technologically.

So now we're looking at trying to come up with fun ideas that are within the bounds the Devs have, if not actively, then certainly passive aggressively, placed us within. I for one, if we must abandon all hope of actually being smugglers, would love to run some sort of illicit "thing." If that "thing" cannot be a ship with secret compartments for getting goods past dangerous patrols and checkpoints, with the risk of being caught and have a harrowing time trying to fight my way through or run for my life, then fine, give us *something* else that is illicit. An illegal gambing casino fits that bill nicely, and I personally would have a lot of fun running such an establishment. After all ... there's a lot of money in the game right now, far more than the Devs ever envisioned when they were designing the game and thinking about where it'd be after nearly a year. Let them give us something to help them reduce the credits in circulation.

Let us run establishments where the stupidly rich ("I'll bid 3.5m for that Droid Experimentation +1 tape!") can drop some cash, and then make it to where each time we fail a Crackdown roll and get attacked by Stormies, that we lose either 30% of our winnings that day if we manage the fight them off, or 50% of our earnings that day for letting everyone inside be killed. That'd be a lot of money that just suffered from the -delete- key, and that's good for the game, right?

The point is, we just need the Devs to tell us what *they* envision. They keep asking us what *we* envision, and then shooting down everything we tell them. How about if they just *tell* us what ballpark we're playing in, and then we'll go hogwild with pertinent and "realistic" ideas.

That would be sweet. Especially if a certain percentage of the house winnings went to the city to help pay upkeep.

Awsome Idea about the Gambler proffesion.

Specially if Smugglers can slice the machines to increase their chances of winning.

If you get caught, you get a TEF and Banned from that Casino.

For Casino's to work at all they will need graphics. Noone playes the Casino games as they are now.

Multiplayer tables is a must. Would be interesting to sit at a table with people with tags like Gambler, Cardshark, Fortune-hunter, Risk-Taker or somthing like that.

And much like the Cantina's is a social place to have fun.

Actually I had an idea I thought we ALL could enjoy.

Hotels.

Yeah ya heard me, hotels.

Why would hotels be the bomb? Because if you want it to be a GOOD one, you need a lot of people.

Sure, you could just be a master merchant and set down a little flea bag that's nothin' but rooms to rent with a 50 item storage, and low maintence paid directly to the owner who pays it to the whole structure.

Or you could hire a chef, and get a kitchen in it.

And a smuggler, and put a casino in it.

And an entertainer and get a small showroom in it.

etc.etc.etc.

And other crafters and have some shops in it. It'd be like the Mall everyone wants but COOLER. Because people could LIVE in it as well.

Great idea! We could just use a cantina and give the smuggler ability to place casino game machines. Not sure though if smugglers would get a cut of the winnings or all of it go to the city? I love the idea but giving one profession an unending revenue stream doesn't seem fair.
