Well, if they one day make it so you dack and launch from POB ships, it could make a decent combat command ship from what i'm hearing.

While POB shields remain so weak compared to player weapons I can't see any vessel in this game being a good command vessel ... as it stands, an X-Wing (especialy heavy x-wing) can still kill any player vessel in 1 direct hit with all its weapons... not to mention a B-Wing, Jedi Starfigher Heavy X-Wing or ARC... If POB shields can gain a PVP rating of around 15k THEN maybe they'd be usable

Another suggestion for the Y-8....Allow seismic missles to break up astroids with in it's blast radius sorta like blowing up all the little chunks at once. It is balanced out in a sense that you can only carry a limited amout of ammo so you don't go missle crazy. So you have mining lasers blasting away the chunks from the main astroids, the turrent breaking them up into smaller chunks then wham...seismic missile...
Heck if Jango can do it accidentaly why can't we? Y-8 has a ordinance port we should be able to use it.
Oh by the way for those of you who haven't figured it out yet. For every small astroid chunk you blow up you get X number of units equivalents to your mining lasers damage rating divided by 100. Still trying to figure out the rate for tractored in stuff.

You can tell this ship was rushed...
I tried using this ship and was severly disappointed
I had the pilot using the tractor beam, top turret with the mining laser, and the bottom rear turret for defense.
This worked...fairly well
Except it was difficult to see in the pilots station with the obstructed view.
I don't see why the 'turn off cockpit' option does not apply to turrets or POB ships.
Tractoring chunks in was also very difficult because it would bring it close to the pilots chair, not the weapon mount, which was where it was registering a hit.
And the whole trick about coordinating the different turrets was tough too.
Relying on other people manning turrets to go mining is a bit annoying. Its not like mining is incredibly exciting either. I was under the delusion that the Y-8 was for serious miners that wanted to be more efficient than mining in a snubfighter.
As it is now, its MUCH easier to make several smaller runs in a starfighter than using the Y-8 or any POB ship for mining.
Suggestions to improve the Y-8:
-Change pilots view so its unobstructed. (All POB ships could use the 'disable cockpit' graphics, and turrets too, slows FPS significantly, making it more difficult to aim)
-Check the 'hitbox' for tractoring in asteroids so it will detect asteroid pickups alot easier.
-Add a weapon mount for a tractor beam for the pilot to use. So, the entire loadout can be.
Top Turret - Mining laser
Bottom/Rear- Defense
Pilot - Tractor & Defense or Mining laser
Then at least one could mine efficiently by themselves, but be open to attack by raiders.
OR, you could have a different way of implementing the tractor beam in the Y-8, instead of it using a weapon mount, it could have a separate entry under the 'manage ship' menu. Then when you're mining and you turn it on it could just automatically come from the ship or the pilot's weapon mount.
Then the weapons loadout would work better as well.
Top Turret - Mining Laser / Defense
Bottom/Rear - Defense (Mining?)
Pilot - Mining Laser / Defense
Or you could move the bottom turret all the way to the bottom of the ship so it also had a 360 degree arc of movement.
If the idea is to force people to group to go mining, I think it is only fair for there to be an innate advantage, or multiplier for the ship to capture more resources per asteroid chunk.
For example, if a snubfighter gets 10 units per chunk, the Y-8 might get 15 or 20 units for that same chunk. Just an example.
Otherwise there is no incentive for Y-8 pilots to enlist gunners to go mining if they can do a faster job in a snubfighter.
Good Idea, poorly implemented.
What else is new.

I see that in some point, adding more gunpoints would also make this a nasty combat platform, PVE-wise. so another possible way to make this the best mining ship, could be to add several mining droid pods, basically being small ship with a couple of mining lasers, and a speed of 500 or something alike, just enough to keep up with the 'roids. These could be used by the people inside the mining vessel by the rest of the crew. that would also make sense why you need alot of people up in the vessel.
It could also be a cool asset if the shipwright had to build these droids (Y8 fit only) and you had to replace them if destroyed.
In this way, the Y8 would not be turned into a battlecruiser, and still i think be the best Mining vessel out there, since it would house several small mining droids (ships) with the same capability as fighters to mine asteroids.

I noticed a few of you saying that when you shoot at the mother asteroid in a multiplayer ship you cant get chunks to break off. I noticed this to and think i found the reason. I was in my YT yesterday with a friend and we started shooting at a asteroid and couldent get anything. After a few minutes of trying I went to the pilots seat to head back and before I got out of range, my friend who was still in the turrent opened fire and what do you know, 3 or 4 chunks broke off. Pilot must be in the pilots seat or nothing breaks off. tryed it 4 or 5 times. Soon as I get up, no chunks. I really hope thats a bug. It would be kinda stupid If The pilot had to sit there and twiddle his thumbs while the crew does all the work. Since there is no pilot controled weapons in the YT, Decimator and nova there is no reason to move. There is no reason why the pilot shouldent be able to go man a turrent.

The Y-8 Needs some turret love but other then that, i can mine perfectly fine with my ship. I can control the tractor beam and the mining laser from the pilot seat.
For MP purpose the turrets need some work though.
Collision detection on the cockpit needs some adjustment, when i chase an asteroid (or a ship) half the object can get inside the cockpit so i must slow down to be able to target it again.
"Without a partner using a tractor beam it is challenging to manuevor that beast at low speeds."
I found to my disappointment that the Y-8 has much better handling then the B-wing. (the ship i started to mine in)
Now..im not disappointed that the Y-8 have such a "good" handling, but rather that the B-wing has such a damn lousy handling. Thats however is another issue for another thread - i really hope that SOE dont "adjust" the Y-8's handling though.
If you follow this guide on the Y-8 (someome make me a clicky)
You willnotice that you can handle both the laser and the tractor from the pilot seat.

i stilll think it is a ridiculous set up and trying to get help mining is worse then pulling teeth everyone one ot too busy with quests and groups. i hear nueral pilots cause you a kimo pretty good. but as for me im imp and use my oppressor argh 1000 at a time. maybe ill retry the y-8 after i throw a null bolt and elite rail in it , sweet weapons

Get a shipwright to make you a largo starfighter cargo hold. I think its cyanomethanic and silicaceous thats needed. Check first, i'm probably wrong.
Improves the quest reward cargo hold from 1,000 to 1,550 (my SW friend said that was the max it could be experimented)
Still not as good as that 5k Y-8 hold, but at least its something.

Wow, I did this quest and I am really disappointed with this useless ship. It is total trash. First off why would a mining ship be multi-person? Mining is work, no one wants to join a crew to shot astoriods. My Kryat would be the perfect mining ship if it had a larger cargo hold. I have one good cannon for protection, one mining cannon, and one tractor. It also handles beautiful for chasing down those pieces. Thats all I want in a mining ship. This is what the Y-8 should have been able to do but with a huge cargo hold. If we can't get this turkey fixed, can we at least get a larger cargo hold for the ships that actually work? The heck with multi-person, there isn't enough profit for a crew, just give us a worker ship. At least let us redead this turkey so we can store it away in case its ever worth having. As it is now, I have no use for this ship whatsoever.
