JSFs aren't the end-all-be-all - you have to equip them masterfully before they become forces to be reckoned with.

The thing JSFs have working against them is the .95x speed mod - the JSF is meant to be a fighter, not a runner - in the words of Tommy Lee Jones in the abysmal Top Gun knockoff Fire Birds:

"We do not have the speed of the jet jocks - when two [ships] start a fight, someone is going to die."

Also the other common sense quote:

"Rules of engagement: one, whoever sees the other person first is the winner; two, whoever gets seen first is toast."

Coming back to the kill ratio thing. Personally, I think its a load of rubbish. Anyone can pull out an impressive sounding number out of thin air and until some kind of score board ranking thing comes to JTLS, well people can keep their ratios. I'm not doubting that people are lying [well I am really but what're you going to do?] but I just don't think that a pilot can personally vouch for themselves on their successes and how good they are. That is a right reserved for your peers only. I don't know...thats just me and I'm pretty wierd.

Yes. agree again 100% To help this along a bit I've adopted the show-boating that Jedi and BH do with their kills. I keep a list of names showing the pilots I've shot down. I do this for 2 reason.

#1) To keep an accurate count of my kills and have proof. I only count Individual pilot kils. If I shoot down Johhny Ace 8 times I still only count him as one kill. Although in my bio he gets a "(8)" next to his name. I also don't count kills of pilots who went down too fast to get their name. If I am not able to send you a /salute then that is an unconfirmed kill.

#2) I also keep track of pilot names, put them into my bio and sig to try to get that "Oh hell no!" effect. Maybe one of these guys will see their name and want to come even the odds thus creating more action in space. I'd do just about anything to get more people up there.

I'd like to say that I'm 50:0 but I'm not. I'd be happy to be 50:50 but we only have 50 people on our server and not all of them fly so I'm happy with my 17:3 score.

I persoanlly think that anyone who flys and flys often and has a score of 20+:0 is full of it. No matter how good you are you will be shot down. It might be lag, it might be that damn token respec window, it be that it's 4am and you're not at your best, maybe you zigged when you should have zagged, maybe an NPC knocked something out and left you crippled, or maybe you just got bested. The point is that the law of averages says that you will be shot down. And if it happens it happens. It sucks and it hurts your ego but it happens and it doesn't mean you're a bad pilot. It just means there may be room for improvement. Unless of course your record is like 1:50...then you might be a bad pilot

Im still scared though. Unless they're not very experienced and running crafted engines or something. Honestly ive been out of the PvP scene lately . WOrking on joining the 9 badge club. But i gotta tell ya that month break i took did some damage. I came back and that feeling of finesse i used to have was totally gone. Major reason why i decided to finish the other badges. Man, even flying the RotW ships seems to have dulled my edge a bit. I mean, while I'm in a super-maneuverable ship like the Jedi Interceptor, I'm fine in PvP and whatnot. But when I switch back to my old X-wing, my advanced X-wing, my Firespray, etc, etc, etc, I don't have the finesse I did before. My shots are a bit sloppier, my maneuvering isn't as precise, and things feel too sluggish to be effective. I'm afraid if I encountered some gap in space/time that allowed the me pilot of pre-RotW flying my old X-wing encounter the post-RotW me in my Actis, the post-RotW me would lose...

You've hit the nail on the head there matey. Thats what I believe with these new Rotw ships...they're so good you just don't have to tryif you're a good pilot who knows what reverse engineering isand is the reason I'm sticking to my A-wing.

Now I appreciate some good pilots, even friends of mine fly around in the Eta and the Belballub, but from my point of view real pilots fly proper ships and shouldn't feel the need for these new 'comes with training wheels' ships in my oppinion. Thats just me though...However, some RotW ships are good. The advanced variants, i.e the Advanced X-wing, RG TIE and the Vaksai are awesome and very welcome additions. [shame about the bugged quest] but still. As for the ARC well erm...it looks pretty, I'll give it that.

Also as for TIE Oppressors around the stardestroyer....I've noticed somthing. Wait..noticed somthing about missiles in general around the ISD lately. A few months back I was claiming that I could avoid missiles by simply outmanouvering them. Well eh..I think I might have been wrong on that one because...There have been times since where people have got missiles off at me by the ISD but..as soon as that thing's guns open up and thus lag and general frame rate hell is created....most of the time I won't get hit.

I took this to the extent of getting a friend to duel me, launch torps....then I just sat still for a few seconds [using shield shunt and some good shields so i didn't get wasted too quick by the ISD] ...amazingly they didn't hit me.

So I tried it myself...On my A-wing, even though on their own they don't do too much, I always have Mk II IRs equipped...well I have gotten a few off at people while the ISD has been flaring up and they didn't hit home. So in summary....missiles in general areas of lag and slow frame rate don't work too well I don't think....that or they crash into the ISD...Its still a grey area but I really am trying to find out what going on. [I wish Norram was still here...he was the one who I had the 'he throws missiles at me but they don't hit me' phenomena with most]

As i sit here, waiting for the vette to spawn so i can finish Storm squadron, ive been wanting to post this, seems i might get away with it in this thread.

But..
as i was doing mhy teir 3 missions
as i was doing my teir 4 missions,
as i was doing my 30 kessel kill missions
and as i sit here waiting for the vette...

Im desperately tring to see a player who IS NOT in a JSF, besides myself.

I know way back when many of us loathed and dreaded the idea of "composite in space", but from what ive seen lately, its bloodly offical in my book.

Like composite armor, EVERYONE is in a JSF.

I may aquire the ship at some point, but im really discouraged to fly it.
I dont need a JSF to be good.

I should be an arse and come back here and do everythign those ppl do in a 40K mass Tie/ln.
Just to rub it in their face, not that any of them would "get it."

I did notice though, while doing the 30 kill mission, i was outkilling and outflying 3 JSF's (we were competing for the same spawns) and i always got the loot

Definately. I went and mastered all 3 imps squadrons after RotW with a Heavy TIE, and I finally took the time recently to load out my olderships again and fly those. I couldn't believe how poor my piloting in my Firespray had become, definately need a workout before I'll be toasting player a-wings again with it. The new ships are good for lazy fun, but too much in them seems bad to keep your heavy ship skills up-to-date.

^ To put it bluntly.... exactly. In fact Dumicus...I would like to duel you because if I'm correct..we only flew against each other twice.

1. When we first knew of each others existence and was what I counted as my turn around from your average new to pvp pilot to waking up and smelling the daisys [or is it Daisies? /shrug]

and

2.The very first time I took out my A-wing rather badly set up at the time for pvp and I think you missiled me to death..so I'm yet to kill you which I know sounds harsh because I like you...but rhetoric wise...die dirty Imp!

LOL ya your right, we only went up against each other twice.

FIrst time was in Deepspace. I think i was in a Tie Advanced at the time. I took out your Xwing on the intitial engagement.
- I started firing earlier then you did. I knew the closure rate was misleading.

Second time i was in my oppressor. I was FP grinding, and i was kind of falling asleep and getting lazy with the Z key. You DID catch me my surpise. I was lucky i survived your first pass. I kicked my ship into 40% throttle , pulled hard on the YaW AND PITCH axis, pulled as hard as i could, got you painted, then held down the fire button and waited for the lock.

Right now i fully suspect that you will kill me the first time out, I havent PvPed in awhile, and you PvP every day. But i have no problem with that, i got a couple deaths coming to me anyway. I really do have to get back in the saddle so to speak, im rusty. Seriously, taking a month off, is a finesse killer. ANy feeling of finesse i had, ive had to relearn. thats the one reason why i decided to do vortex and later storm. The feeling was gone, and i lost my confidence. I think im doing better now, i guess we'll have to see later

I'm really not that good. At least *I* don't think so. Some people may talk about me, and say that im good, but i dont think so. I'm dead serious. Hell ask ostat, he's owned me more than anyone on bria, he can tell you first hand.

I know I'm good, and I really don't care if people talk about me, for good or bad. I just want a thread to go up on the Eclipse forum page one day talking about how much of an a**hat I am because I killed some farmers in DS repeatedly...last night I added five kills to my tally and broke 60 finally. Also bagged my first POB (a YT-1300) - wouldn't have caught him had he not run smack dab into the side of the zone and been forced to turn. It was kinda a bitter victory, though - either the turret gunners were nonexistent or weren't paying attention. The pilot came back later in an M22-T (again turretless, it looked like), and upon acquiring him, he darted to a Vette, probably thinking I'd shy away from the turrets...he learned the hard way that Vettes (and Gunboats) won't deter me.

A guy who was coming into DS "just to repair" (although strangely enough I was about equidistantly inbetween FS and the ISD - not exactly close to the Rebel spawn point) wandered into my 2k "no no" zone and I engaged him. During the short conversation afterward, I was shocked to learn that he had killed me before without my knowledge, along with another guy who supposedly HE claimed had killed me.

So I guess that's the extent of my flattery - a bunch of people thinking they've killed me. I *KNOW* who's killed me - I'm vain and anally retentive enough to remember each and every name for future revenge. 61:6, and if I have anything to say about it, it'll stay that way for quite some time.

Hello pilot posters...

I stumbled upon this post and have a few questions/remarks as I am near my Rebel Ace box now and have just started going overt for missions to gain some quick xp while i'm flying.

1) How does decay work in space? I think i know that in DS you get no decay if it's a PvP death. Is this not true outside of DS? Can anyone explain why this makes sense? No PvP death on the ground causes decay of items/armor.

2) A (hopefully "polite") remark to you shoot-on-sighters: I can understand where you are coming from... yes, the rules are straightforward, if i go overt you can shoot me. It's a war, blah blah... all true. However, everyone is new to PvP at some point. Wouldn't the current PvP'ers like to see PvP grow? It's very hard for some (like me) to make the transition from PvE to PvP. Some of you boast that you are SOOO GREAT! If you are indeed Mad Skilled, then why can't you afford to take a moment to see if the player is a threat, before blowing them up? Or if they send you a /tell saying they would prefer not to engage, at least give them a moment to truly leave the scene. I would like to be able to be overt so that I can engage someone of comparable skill, but I personally I do not want to engage without consent, or at least warning. I like to remember that this is a game with many players. I try to make it fun for as many as i can, which in the end can only foster a more pleasant gaming environment.

I would like to add though... that if i got blown up while overt without wanting to engage, then I would certainly not be "mad" at the enemy player... unless of course he/she KNEW that I was not going to engage. That would probably get me "mad," but I would still not flame. I might send a tell like "grrr... you suck!"

Oh one more remark (read: rant)... Would anyone of you "master" pilots actually get satisfaction out of blowing up my ship? I'm not yet Ace, I cannot solo a Decimator... i.e. I'm a tier4 pilot, but I still suck. How long would it take you to end my space trip? Let me answer... before I knew you were there. Same thing happens on the ground when I'm overt. lol You'd go off and brag to your friends, while I'd wonder what happened. Wow! You are such an awesome pilot! You just blew someone up that never had a chance to even fight back. It's like hunting animals that are tied up or something... If you, oh Great Ones, are truly as Great as you say, you should be able to tell a newly skilled pilot from a truly skilled pilot. And if you actually want a satisfying fight, give a /tell, or a warning shot or something. Trust me, in most cases, you will still win, but at least you can feel good about giving us a heads up.

PS - none of this applies to Deep Space. In Deep Space, since it's decay-free and it's clear that Deep Space is a battleground, i'd say if you go there expect a fight, and too bad if you lose. I'll still go there, i'm sure, before i'm ready, but i won't lose anything so who cares!

3) Is there a way to make a space spatial chat macro. I'd at least like the opportunity to say "please don't attack" even if the other player will decide not to listen (as they have the right to do, even if it isn't "nice")

>>why can't you afford to take a moment to see if the player is a threat, before blowing them up? Or if they send you a /tell saying they would prefer not to engage,

I dunno about other people, but when i go overt, im just as nervous now as when it was my first time. Despite my chastisment on the forums, I make no assumptions on skill level a target ingame. I say target, because thats what i see, a target that i must destroy before he destroys me. No more, no less. I have never been given quarter, i don't expect any quarter, and i dont give any quarter.

As for the tell part. some people do send warning tells, im still trying to figure out how i can macro a tell to send a warning. (im sure as hell not gonna type a players name and message, no time for that) Weither or not you want to engage is irrevalant, You voluntarily opened yourself for PvP by the simple act of going overt.

>>Would anyone of you "master" pilots actually get satisfaction out of blowing up my ship?

I can only see that applying to composite armor. err i mean the JSF. I personnaly dont take any satsifaction in the decay of a ship unless i personnaly know the pilot as an arsehat. (which is rare). But if its a JSF , then regardless of pilot, id take great plasure in blowing that thing up. Primarly because im upset with how some aspects of space are working out. The JSF in this example is a symbol of many things that i dislike so destroying it while fing an A wing , T/I, or even an oppressor, would bring a smile to my face.

1. On a RARE occasion, you can suffer some kind of decay upon being killed in DS, but I believe it's successful MOST of the time.

2. I wasn't given any ground on my Ace mission when I was engaged five times by players (yes, newbies - Kessel DID used to be general PvP before people complained IT WASN'T FAIR!!!), so I'm all for the "Baptism by Fire" approach. You don't learn how to PvP and stay aware of yourself by killing NPCs.

As for how long it'd take, most engagements are over in 1-2 shots if you or your opponent is using nicely-REed weaponry. Players with exceptional armor and shielding can sometimes take 2-3 hits from crafted blasters before being in real trouble.

And I don't think satisfaction truly enters into it. I just think what would be the case if the situation were reversed (and coincidentally if I *didn't* check my surroundings a minimum of one time per 30 seconds), and most of the time I think the wayward pilot I might end up destroying would think "ha ha, I'm gonna totally gank this n00b and decay him."

The satisfaction comes from making HIM think he's got the drop on me.

About the only exception I make is if I'm overt in Kessel and an overt is helping someone take down a Vette. I'll wait until the Vette blows.

It's an overused expression, but its survival of the fittest in space - not the most fit ship-wise, but the most fit OBSERVATION-wise. Nine times out of ten, if you die when overt or in DS, it's because you weren't checking your perimeter and by the time you noticed you'd been targeted, it was too late to do anything about it.

I don't think the JSF or any other ship will ever be the composite armour of space simply because there are independent variables involved in JTL combat that don't exist in the ground game. Being one's own skills, reflexes, alertness etc. The JSF may help a poor pilot compensate somewhat for poor skills, but that compensation is nowhere near equivalent of being a good pilot.
