Thread: Space PvP Starsider Style

I also might add that I think some of the video criticisms might be a bit unwarranted. I think the goal (as best I can tell) was to present a 'Classic Star Wars Space Battle' in a more cinematic way via the SWG engine -and I think they did a fairly good job in that regard (if you compared the footage to the space battles from the films, they're fairly similar in style). The XWA dialogue helped this atmosphere quite a bit giving the film a bit of a plot/purpose. Think of it as a Star Wars short rather than a video demonstrating PvP.
That's pretty much it - and thanks to the others who defended the criticism (which is always welcome.)
To be honest I wasn't really trying to make a movie about space combat in SWG (I'm toying with an actual "professional" movie at this point), and was looking to add space footage since it hasn't been done too often. Quite ironically, moments after I had launched into space and was testing out FRAPS and GameCam to see what was feasible, I got a tell from a player letting me know that a Space PvP event was going down in one hour. I guess they saw me flying around the Naboo station in my yacht.. ![]()
So I took the bait - seeing as I'm in no way in any shape or form to actually fight (I hadn't really played JTL since last December), I figured I'd just fly around and record footage, and see what would come out.
The result was a whole lot of cool fighting, but something was lacking. Music (which by default I have turned off), and voices. Being a HUGE fan of XvT and XWA, I just dubbed in some sound files to add a twist.. threw in a few camera cues and switches to mix things up a bit, and bundled it in a semi-botched "propaganda" video (if anything) in a matter of 3-4 hours or so. Hardly a production worth mention in the great books of movie-making, I agree.
But like the others, I felt that something was better than nothing, and seeing as this footage is 100% accurate and non-staged, this is really what goes down on Starsider. In general, I know of many players on several servers who, after 2 years or so, are genuinely dissatisfied with their overall gaming experience. Hopefully, this quick video of an actual event from a 3rd person perspective is a testament of just how cool our server can be. Wasn't expecting any oscars or anything of the sort, heh. ![]()
So yeah.. to those who are considering the move to a new server (or are already in the process), check us out and congrats! Gwreng listed above a website (FutureDroids) which lists most if not all organized space events for you pilot enthusiasts, and I believe you know have several points of contact should you need any information about how to get involved with these events. I myself would be delighted to assist you should you need some of the more basic essentials like armor/weapons/foods on our server, as that's something Im fairly adequate and comfortable with. ![]()
Also thank you for the overwhelming response - I was skeptical that space footage could turn out as 'cool' as it was in the movies, and this proved me wrong. You can bet I'll be making more (and better) movies, and I'll naturally keep the Pilot community updated as development ensues.
In the classic words of XvT lingo, "gl, hf, mtfbwy!"
sKiLLs101 wrote:As another poster said, the entire thing seemed very staged. Somehow I serioulsy doubt a pilot would choose to fly a B-Wing, or even an X-WIng, in a PvP match. If this is so, the variation was very apparant, and frankly unnecessary. If otherwise, you need to find better pilots who won't choose a B-Wing or a TIE fighterThat pretty much does it... Looking forward to the next vid!
Well this is where you and the other poster would be wrong. The only thing made up about this event was the story line of the video although it was a great bit of Imperial spin. I think your confusing better craft with better pilots. Better pilots fly whatever craft they are in well. Better ships are simply a luxury for some and a crutch for others. I was in that battle and there was nothing staged about it. The B-wing, X-wing, and TIE varient pilots lasted as long as they did because they are all very experienced and know their craft very well. Despite what you may think there is more to PvP than a small hitbox. Sure it helps but a good pilot can make a heavy fighter very effective. This is the second time in two weeks I've seen Dashka fly his B-wing and he's doing very well with it.

You make the third from Radiant (myself and Nab are the 2 others) with that same idea. LOL
Make it 4th ![]()
I dunno, lately JTL is my main fun source in SWG, and Radiant Deep Space is a graveyard. AFAIK there are no concerted battles out of there besides a couple of them that my little community organized.
I guess I'll just create a pure pilot in SS to see what's what. Anyway Kalia... dont you think is time to awake Radiant's love for space? Maybe if we organize some things people will start hanging out more often. What do u think?

I'll be interested in taking part in any space stuff in radiant.
Well, I can "try" to organize something among the Spanish community in Radiant, which is no small at all, but it would be cool if we could count with help spreading the message to other guilds

http://fightercommand.futuredroids.com is the website that we use for both imperial and alliance coordination of events and stories.
The video is awsome, as always it definately makes me want to come back but I will be leaving the game for a period of time and I know if I don't then there wouldn't be any hope of me returning. Halyn and Pro are definately the two most dedicated pilots in Alliance Starfighter Command that I've had the privliage of working with and getting to know as friends. Speak to either of those two in game if you have any further questions.
Admiral, I intentionally avoid using past tense here.
There was a question about the space player base in Starsider. We are very fortunate to have very mature players in both sides who make all necessary efforts to keep space PVP entertaining for all serious players who participate. (Most of them happen to be RPers, too, which helps adding diversity and excitement to the events.) As game mechanics and sometimes natural assumptions and practices more or less regularly raise the necessity to talk things over and agree on them, both IG and on the ASFC/IHC forum Gwreng posted we try to positively resolve anything that needs to be addressed. I might be fortunate, but as I regularly fly overt I have many encounters with those pilots do not attend to regular space events. Regardless of the result of the encounter the response is a form of congrats and/or questions on the actual setup, but I never encountered any aggressive ooc responses so far.

Leaph, how exactly does the transfer work? From what I understand, you cant carry money over, right? And nothing in your datapad... so you loose FCs, but you can unload ships and carry all the parts over? And how much can you carry? I assume basically as much as you can hold... clothes, armor, and a full inventory and backpack? (So essentially, 130 items plus whatever you're wearing when you transfer?)
I can answer that.
You can't bring with you:
- Your credits in your bank acount
- Resources (so if your sitting on a 300K brick of 900 OQ/PE high grade polymetric, kiss it bye bye)
- Factory crates
- Houses
- ANYTHING and EVERYTHING in your datapad. (any ships/pets/speeders/waypoints/droids/FC, ALL gets wiped)
What you CAN bring with you:
- Any and all ship parts and chassis. (this includes any prenerf DI's, engines, deeds, etc)
- You can equip a backpack, stuff it full, and THEN fill your inventory with everything you can carry.
- Veteran rewards, holograms, etc take them with you if you want them because their kinda hard to replace
- Ground combat weaponry. (it should be noted that any weapon you bring with you will have 1000/1000 durablity when you arrive on the other server, w/ all slices intact)
- Armor (however i woudlnt bother with armor, as the biolink is lost, and it comes out at 100/100 durablity, so dont waste the space if you ask me)
- Clothing (like armor, it comes out at 100/100 durablity). Ace rewards transfer.
- Credit Chip: ( i did this as an experiment, and i didnt think it would work. While all your millions in the bank is lost, Credit chips, as they reside in your inventory, are transferable. So i highly recommend saving up a fat credit chip before transfering. It helps getting started with buying houses and speeders to get you going)
Your character:
- Your badges remain intact.
- Your factional rank is lost, as well as all FP. You start out as 0/0 faction.
- Your appearance is unchanged. You come out exactly how you left your old server.
- Your name may or may not have to be changed. I highly recommend creating an alt on your target server, and try adding your main characters name to your friends list. If it works, your name is taken, if it doesnt work, then your name is not taken and you wont have to change it.
- Last but not least, YOUR QUEST STATUS IS RESET!. Bummed that you coudlnt do the RGI mission after having done the heavy xwing? Now you can. Did Nymm Gyp ya before? Now you can redo it.Message Edited by Ducimus on 08-08-2005 10:40 AM
Cool info.
A quick question about quest status, If you've transferred accross and you have the heavy x-wing / arc / rgi / jsf etc. deed and your quest status is reset does that mean you cant unpack the ship until you do the quest again?
First, a little background: I just reactivated my account and so had respecs available and also all my armor had the ‘refit’ option. This refit option may be critical to avoiding a problem someone else had. I also had a second account (I’m actually consolidating all my toons to a single account) that I used to hold all non-transferable items. This was done ‘just in case’ something went tragically wrong. You could also use a trusted friend for the same thing.
Steps to prepare:
- Determine name on new server. If your name is not taken, you will have a complete name transfer over whether you still want that name or not. As previously mentioned, just try to add folks to your friends list like starsider.myname.
- Make sure you do not currently have a character on that server
- Make sure you have a slot available to create a new character.
- Remove all items from the safe deposit box
- Get rid of all cash and bank money
- Remove all factory crates and resources from inventory (avoid errors before setting out)
- Make sure no structures are placed. (avoid errors before setting out)
- Move all items from ‘organization’ bags to the flat inventory. The only items in a bag should be in your equipped backpack. There should be nothing in bags within the backpack either. (done to help the system see your inventory better)
- Remove all clothes (will happen anyway during transfer). An equipped weapon is OK
- Have at least 5 inventory slots available during transfer
- Wait at least 30 to 60 minutes from last log out before requesting the transfer. (lets all database transactions complete)
After Transfer:
- Wait at least 30 minutes after the completion e-mail before logging in. (lets all database transactions complete)
What I found after logging in was that I had 10K cash and all my items as expected except that my equipped armor was unequipped. I was able to convert over my armor with the ‘refit’ option. I did this with both sets of my armor. The durability converted over fine. I did not gain anything since it seemed to do a percentage of durability at the conversion. Also, I was no longer asked about using a free respect.
People have already weighed in on the staging thing, but just because a B-Wing and some Xs were out there doesn't mean anything; people do some crazy things on Starsider. Tactics are a lot different between group battles and 1v1 PVP, and when you get a core of vets on either side, they start innovating. In fact, the development of tactics and countertactics over a few weeks or months worth of battles is one of the most entertaining parts of an ongoing PVP scene.
