Hi, my name is Sota and I tried to like Battlestar Galactica too....
Reason I don't like the new show: There isn't a single character in the show that I wouldn't mind the Cylons killing.
Reasons I like the old show better: The women in the old show were definitely hotter.
Reason the show shouldn't have been revived: dagits.
LOL!

Only thing I liked about the new series is they used the old ships from the origninal series. When nothing else is better, sorta blows. What no more new ships? They coulda fixed the jamming/shutdown problem ans started using the new ships again. /Sigh I'm fan of the old as well.
You should see the end of season 2...

That being said, some of the characters on the new BSG have been for the most part "good". I think a lot of people miss it, though, because the show is written in a way that the choices the characters make aren't always shown in black and white terms. For example, was Adama justified in jailing the president when she interferred with military matters and had Starbuck steal the captured Cylon Raider? Or was Apollo justified in going against his father and helping the president escape because he felt that his father's decision was illegal? Or was President Roslin justified in dumping the Cylon prisoner out the airlock, even though she didn't have any real evidence whether or not keeping him posed a risk or not? Heck, you can even find some people on the net argueing that Admiral Cain's actions in the mid-season finally were justified. The point being that if you're used to most sci-fi, where the good guys and the bad guys are easily defined and readily apparent, then you probably won't like the characters on the new BSG. Personally, I love it though. If they had dumbed it down and gone with a less realistic view of humanity, the show probably would have sunk to the realm of shows such as Andromeda or Earth Final Conflict.

Yeah I don't consider BSG most sci-fi... if anything it is one of the few shining examples of true Science Fiction... something that is too rare on TV and in movies these days.

This reminds me of the review Orson Scott Card wrote about Serenity. He pointed out thatgood Sci Fi isn't about technology, it's about people.
And I disagree with the assertion that the characters have no redeeming quallities. So they aren't perfect angels...that makes the show more interesting (and "realistic") in my opinion. These people just lost everything...as far as they know they're the only survivors of humanity. They lost their families, their friends, the guy/girl they lost their virginity to, their first love, the person they hated most. On top of that, they're being relentlessly huntedby remorseless amoralkilling machines.I guarantee that none of us would be the picture of perfect mental health in similar circumstances.
That's a huge problem, imo, with the first show. Humanity was nearly wiped out, but there was no sense of impending doom, no stress, no despair, no anxiety, no exhaustion. "Sure, 99.999% of humanity has been wiped out, but no problem, we'll just find Earth and everything will be fine". I enjoyed the originalwhen I was a kid, but as an adult I just cringe now when I see the original episodes.
But to each their own. I'll watch the new show because I enjoy it. Those that don't are free to watch the original on DVD. Technology is great. ![]()

I know a lot of hardcore BSG fans don't even consider Galactica 1980 to be part of the official storyline, since it contradicted a lot of stuff from the original series.
They actually took one of the episodes of the original series and totally changed the ending. In the original, Starbuck escaped a planet he crash landed on by sticking pieces of a viper together with a cylon ship he shot down. It was a really cool episode where he tries reprogramming a cylon. Enemy Mine took alot of ideas from this episode I think.
In the 1980 series, starbuck falls in love with a woman he finds on the planet, has a child, and launches the child into space hoping that the cylon/viper ship will find the Galactica on its own. The child supposedly becomes one of the stars of the 1980 series, so this episode was butchered for a cheap way to provide a backstory episode. They didn't even reshoot most of the episode. Just reeditting.

What is the human race missing in this series that it had in the original? Humanity thats what. I've tried to like this series too but from the miniseries on I just wish the cylons would hurry up an finish off the fleet. There is not a single redeeming quality amongst them. These folks represent the absolut worst humanity has to offer. Please, Lords of Cobal, hear my prayer. End this stupid series.Want to see where Galactica should have gone? Read Richard Hatch's Battlestar books starting with "Battlestar Galactica: Amrageddon". Moved the plot in a natural way 20 years into the future. The characters and situations grew up alot from the series. He kept the caste elment alive where being a "Colonial Warrior" meant something. The Cylons are machine-reptile like in the original concept (the TV show changed it to just machines) We all know that Sci Fi channel is incapapble of making good original shows. Please cancel Farscape so we can have more stupid giant snake movies? Fracking idiots.
Another excellent point. I've seen a lot of despicable behavior by the humans on that show. I find it very hard to relate to that.
While I can't relate myself to it, I can relate a lot of society to the themes/characters in it. I've worked in law enforcement for a long time, there are a lot of atrocious human beings out there. You also have to remember the duress people are under from the knowledge of and seeing their home obliterated. Do you honestly know how you would react to it? There are a lot of very competent people that mentally cannot process or deal with something on a scale like that. This is also 'in the future' look how far society has decended morally in the last 40-50 years, not that hard to believe that in another 10+ years or however long its been its either gone just as far down the toilet or far worse.

Uh they do still use the new ships, they took care of the problem. If you remember a majority of mark VII's were destroyed in the initial encounter.
I do like both shows as well. One because of the nostalgia.
I like the show... Acting is taking the place of fancy special effects more and more now, mainly IMHO because special effects have been worn out.
I do think that some of the best actors on theBSG series, are the suporting characters, rather than the stars.
Starbuck isnt very believeable to me. Shes a harda$$, that smokes and drinks constantly, but falls in love twice a season... Not a very good actor either...
Boomer is Very very hot, but thats really about it. She does an ok job of playing 2 and sometimes 3 different personalities in some episodes, but just barely. She does make me want to keep her on the good side of the war, so to speak though.
Apollo is just a kinda stuck in a crappy charachter. They have him rebeling from what is moraly wrong, but still crying to his daddy for some attention. They nead to clean his charachter up, and give him a reason to be there other than being 2nd best at most things.
Number 6 is hot, but just plain evil. She reminds me too much of real women. If she was more volient, instead of minipulative, it would have more of a scifi feel. But her being a mind twisting, $ex using, reality twisting, Lieing Biyotch, makes her way to much like real women for me.
Helo is probably one of the best actors in the show. Not much screen time per episode in the first season, ut i think they realized he has a little more acting potential than some fo there main characters. Hes kinda like the hero/goodguy with poor judgement.
Cheif is a good actor too. Hes constantly getting screwed, and slowly getting fed up with it. He is talented in his work, but doesnt need to brag about it over drinks. He has the worst luck on the show, but i think its making a better character in the long run.
Adama is Edward James Almos. Thats usualy enough to convice me it will be acted well. Heseems to be trying to hard though. His speaches are ok, but i could do without them. The decisions he makes are almost right on with what a perfect hindsight would give him, which makes it a little less believable. Normaly a great actor, hes not doing his best on this series i dont think.
And my final charachter check will go for:
Dee. Looks like she actualy works on a spaceship when shes at her post. Does a great job of seeming very scared when she should be. Smiles at just the right times. Has those great very light colored eyes... hehe. She is dating somone she shouldnt be. She has breached protocol to do something that was right. THis is my favorite charachter. And the choice in actors was very good.

If they drive hummers still, those people are doomed. Those gas guzzlers means the fleet will never make it to earth. They have no Lorren Green. Now they just have committiees with corrupt folks trying to control things.
