I just wonder what timeframe the show takes place in.
If they were to show up on Earth's doorstep circa now, believing in polytheism (Athena, Zeus, and the like), I'd bet the US wouldn't even let them land. Cut to Europe getting the technology.
They'd probably take one look at us and go "where's the nearest black hole?"

In the original series they arrived on Earth in the 1980s.

My impression of the original series is that it wasgeared towards children, while the new series is geared more towards adults.
I um, only get basic cable, so I haven't seen the new shows. But in the old series, didn't Adama refer to the pilots and crew as his children in his narrations?
I also remember some late night episodes that had the Galactica meeting up with colonies from Earth, suggesting they were close to home. Technology was advanced, but the new Earth sounded pretty Nazi. Any idea what I was watching?

I'm talking about a group of people who don't know where Earth is but who are still apparently importing and driving Hummers. It really ruins the effect to hear them talking about Cylons while standing next to my friend's Hummer. I think that's pretty lame.
Well, the Jeep CJ looks a whole lot like the Jeep from WW2. Car technology has moved on just a touch since WW2, but the body looks about the same. Perhaps the Hummer got it right enough for it's basic body style to endure for a long time.
The pistols they carry look different enough to be semi-believable. The automatic weapons they're using are H&K 9mm along with a few other very-recognizable, very contemporary, uh, EARTH weapons.
The .50 cal "Ma Duce" machine guns that are put on every super-modern Abrams tank were designed at the end of WW1. There have been a few very minor changes since then. An M2 built in 1919 looks exactly the same as one built in 2005, at least from the range you'd see it on a TV show. Sometimes, the design is so right nobody comes up with a better one. Nothing says in BSG's reality H&K didn't do that.
Btw, I'd like to point out that you're willing to suspend disbelief about FTL space travel, but it's impossible for the old, reliable, 'classic' designs to pop up again among a rag-tag collection of people fleeing for their lives.
Regarding the technology:
Let's compare the Star Wars technology and environment to Battlestar Galactica. Again, a far away place, very different technology yet somehow "believable" and "identifiable" with similar things on Earth. Therefore, the Star Wars Sci-Fi environment is even more strange than Battlestar Galactica but yet more believable to me as representing a different "society" and technology development.
Cut to Battlestar Galactica. The reverse is now true. You see so much contemporary technology that you could figure these guys exist not in a far away Galaxy, but actually just down the street. The guns, the Hummer, the Cigarrettes, those are just some examples. Pay attention to the show and you'll see lots of little things all over that indicates these guys could be your neighbors. The Sci-Fi part comes in occasionally when they cut to space scenes or you see a Cylon or two.
Maybe that's my beef. The new show is too much like Battlestar Galactica 1980 with a modern facelift.

And I liked when the chicks on the old show wore the tights, instead of them acting like dikes. It is way to soap oprea like now for my taste.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I figure that's my problem with the show. It's 90% contemporary soap opera/suspense show, 10% sci-fi.

What is the human race missing in this series that it had in the original? Humanity thats what. I've tried to like this series too but from the miniseries on I just wish the cylons would hurry up an finish off the fleet. There is not a single redeeming quality amongst them. These folks represent the absolut worst humanity has to offer. Please, Lords of Cobal, hear my prayer. End this stupid series.
Want to see where Galactica should have gone? Read Richard Hatch's Battlestar books starting with "Battlestar Galactica: Amrageddon". Moved the plot in a natural way 20 years into the future. The characters and situations grew up alot from the series. He kept the caste elment alive where being a "Colonial Warrior" meant something. The Cylons are machine-reptile like in the original concept (the TV show changed it to just machines) We all know that Sci Fi channel is incapapble of making good original shows. Please cancel Farscape so we can have more stupid giant snake movies? Fracking idiots.
Another excellent point. I've seen a lot of despicable behavior by the humans on that show. I find it very hard to relate to that.

I honestly like BSG most for the charecter development... it is our flaws that make us human after all... and unfortunatly when you save the huma race you get all of it's flaws.
I like the new BSG it is engaging and good Sci-Fi which is so rare these days... the origonal is pure camp but that is not a bad thing I like camp.
I think some don't like the huminisation of the cylons and how the human charecters treat the human cylons... it is not pretty but it isn't like this is a new thing to human nature.
As to the props... well you would be supprised what you might find if you look closly at many Sci-Fi series.
One last thing... pSci-Fi is not the one making this it's british... Sci-Fi just has the rights here, oh and Farscape got way to damn wierd for me.
In closing I love the new BSG and I find the old BSG fun... I can understand why some would not like it after all
I grew up watching the old series on dad's lap, I still like it, but it just doesn't hold a candle to the new one. My biggest problem with ST was always the "perfect" people living in a "perfect" society...that is what communism was about, everyone is equal, blah, blah, blah. Look what happened to communism (with a few exceptions)....it died! The perfect world doesn't exist. The new serries is filled with gritty people, seems pretty much like real life to me, I don't care how "great" someone is, they have some dark secret/problem that will come to light at some point. The imperfect characters add reality to the show, make it interesting, and as stated before add to the longevity of the show.
As for the guns and hummer, well, firearms are pretty much the same today as they were 200 years ago, yes there have been major technical advances in that time, but for the most partthey all work the same way, you pull a trigger which makes a pin hit a bullet casing ignighting gunpowder, the expanding gasses fromthat force a projectile out of abarrel. Same basic concept since the first one was created. Put a rifle fromthe 1800's next to the latest gratest one and everyone will know they are the same machine. For the hummer, well take something that has 4 wheels an engine and put a basic easy to make body on it and it is going to look pretty much the same, don't believe me, look up a lamborghini LM002, same basic design, designed in the early 80's.
Cylons that look like humans? Why wouldn't a machine race do everything they could to make themselves look like their creators? An added benfit is that you can infiltrate thoses same creators. They still have the the silver models, and they are the ones out fighting.
