Thread: Pre-nerf reward engines

For those of you who can't get ahold of pre-nerf level6 engines, and feel like you're lacking in the speed department, try to get your hands on a post-nerf level 8 Freelancer reward engine. Its 88.5 speed before REing and will have better PYR stats than a level 6. Sure, its still a tad slower than a pre-nerf level 6, and its mass is bigger, but the better turning ability will still make you very competetive.
Actually the post nerf lvl8 is superior to a pre-nerf lvl6 for pvp. Slightly slower top speed but an extra 6 points of ypr makes it much more competetive.
I have a pre-nerf lvl6 and never use it.

Well, I wouldn't say the post-nerf level 8 is better all the time. It takes an extra 15k mass or so to use the level 8, which in the case of a light fighter, such as an a-wing, is going to mean you'llhave to give up some shielding and/orfirepower. In the case of say as A-wing vs. an Oppressor, having higher firepower on the A-wing can be very important. In they get into a turning match, the Oppressor pilot, if he's smart, is going to just hold down the missile fire button, and the A-wing pilot will be dead as soon as the Oppressor gets a lock. With Image Rec II missiles, even in a close range turning match, the Oppressor will only need a couple seconds to get a lock. The A-wing's only hope is to hit the Oppressor before the lock. If the A-wing is using an RE'd level 8 reward gun, he'll most likely only need one to two hits to drop the Oppressor. If the A-wing is using an RE'd level 7 reward gun instead, then he'll probably need to make two to four hits to drop the Oppressor. Also, if the A-wing pilot is a good shot during head to head passes, then he can use the mass he'd save with a pre-nerf level 6 to put on a larger booster and then try to force a series of head to head passes rather than getting into a turning match. This would also minimize the amount of time that the A-wing pilot is at super close range, thus increasing his chances of CMing any missile volleys.

When I fight an oppressor, the most dangerous part is the head to head. This is where they can get a missile lock or get off a well aimed shot and kill you.
As soon as Im behind the oppressor and in a close in dogfight its all over for them. There is no way I will be in their sights for two seconds at this point. I would be dissapointed if I was in their sights for a quarter of a second. No oppressor has ever got a missile shot off at me while being in a close in fight.

Well, the thing is, a lot of pilots haven't yet figured out that you can hold down the missile button before you get a lock and your missiles will then fire the split second you get that lock. A lot of players also haven't yet discovered how good Image Rec II missiles are in PvP. On Starsider we have a lot of Oppressor pilots who have configured their ship specifically to be an A-wing killer. If you go up against an Oppressorthat has aLevel 8 shield shifted forward, and a Mark V armor slab in the front, it could very likely take you 5 hits or more to drop him with a level 7 gun, especially if he gets a Cap to Shield Shunt off. Even if you can outturn him enough to keep out of his sights, he'll still be able to get a lock very quickly as long as he keeps you in his general field of view. In such a situation, you're looking at a turning match that lasts a minimum of 1.5 seconds or so, and that's assuming you manage to score all five of your hits in a row. Throw in some misses and the time could easily jump to 4 or 5 seconds, which is more than enough time for a decent Oppressor pilot to get a lock with Image Rec IIs. On Starsider its gotten to the point where most good a-wing pilots start launching all their chaff as soon as they start turning with an Oppressor, because they know the missile launch will be coming.
Actually, I have a pre-nerf level 8. 108.4 speed, 75-76 PYR. I'm Imp and Freelancer, though, so I've never given it a try in an A-wing. I have seen MANY A-wings go down to Oppressors, though. We have a large scale PvP event on Starsider every Saturday, and we have a large number of Oppressors on the Imp side which are ordered to always go after A-wings first as soon as the battle starts. I agree with you, though, that if you're putting together an all-purpose fighter light fighter, a post-nerf level 8 is generally the way to go. The point I was just trying to make is that in the right situation against the right opponent, a pre-nerf level 6 and heavier fire-power can be more advantageous. Also, keep in mind that once WO3 gets fixed, you're going to need a much bigger reactor to keep running it along with EO4, and in such a situation as that, 15k extra mass is going to be very precious. Another thing is that most people I know who use a post-nerf level 8 don't manage to get their PYR up to 75 or 76. You'll need your PYR stats to be 71.5 or better to hit 75 when you RE. I run the largest space loot vendor on Starsider, so I have a lot of people coming to me asking for parts, and I'd say the vast majority who are REing level 8 engines are too impatient to wait for the good PYR drops and are instead settling for stats of 69 and 70 before REing. Considering that I've seen level 6 engines drop with 70+ for PYR, if you're patient, you could theoretically RE a pre-nerf level 6 that actually has better PYR than most people's level 8s.

Though waiting through multiple ice ages has allowed me to find one with 8050 mass un-RE'd.

Dammit...and here I thought my 9157.1 I've been saving was at the low end.
Now not only do I have to find a LOWER one, but I still have to find a "1:1000" engine that'll give me around 71-72 yaw rating post-RE.
I don't RE unless I have something that's BETTER than what I had before, or reasonably close.

That 8K mass one is out of control, though. Prior to that, the lowest I've found is 8911 and 9071. I got really lucky with the 9071 one and looted it in my first ten engines or so, so it ended up in my first pre-nerf, but until I stumbled over the 8K one, I was convinced 9K was the low end on level 6s.

Heh Orske, I'll let you know if I see one. Last one I've seen sold or traded was just over a month ago, though ("unprintable word," I just realized I've been searching for PYR stats for mine for a month now), so they're obviously kinda rare. There are a modest amount of them out there, though, so something should pop up eventually.
Just bought one today, thanks for the offer of help, though, I appreciate it.
Now, just need to finish my stockpile of lvl6 engines. Does anyone know what the best possible stats are on lvl6 PYR? Highest I have in my stock is 67.0, was wondering how much higher than that I should be holding out for (besides holding out for at *least* a sub 9k mass engine, heh).
