A Navy guy cna confirm or refute this but I believe for the US Navy it is:
Ensign
Lt, Junior Grade
Lt
LT Commander
Commander
Captian Then the four Adms.
No player should have a rank Higher then Lt Commander if we went to Navy Ranks.
Why? Captians command BIG ships. Not just corvettes and destroyers. The commander of a ship is still traditional called a captain but the light ships don't ahve captians commanding most of them.
Captians command things like Bases, Flotillas and the large ships ( Cariers and battle wagons ).
Admirals command large battle groups or and bigger.
Lt Commanders are the ones that command most of the fighter wings and the patrol sized boats aren't even commanded by Lt COmmanders. The PT boats from World War Two were commanded by at most by a Lt. Why PT boats? Because that is teh closest to what the Decimators, Novas and YTs are. In fact the Nova and the YT being transports and cargo ships probably would have at most a Lt Commander.
Now, Freelance tosses in a reall dilema here... Pirates never did ahve a good rank system. Corporations would hire who ever was good and they have a structure but they don't follow the navys version. In fact since most ofteh comercial pilots I know like to fly small planes in their personal time I would bet that there would be more Retired Captians fling YTs then Imp or Rebel Captians flying Decimators or Novas. Independent traders can all them selves what ever they like.
On a personel note I would like to see all officer ranks disapear from the ground for every one BUT squad leaders. Squad leaders should be able to get to the rank of Army Captian. Once you to the rank of Major on the ground you should be COMMANDING groups larger then what we can for right now. A captian is supposed to be commanding a COMPANY of people. That is supposed to be 100 people. Not 7 people.
I can't rember if there is an Imp air force but the US Air Force use a ranks system for the officers that is identicle to the Army. In fact the marines use the same structure as the Army. So the odd balls that are being left on earth is the Navy... Since the Air Force Controls Space.

Winston Churchill said that navy tradition was nothing but "rum, sodomy and the lash".

First off, it's just a game.
If the rank titles available bother you that much...
The storyline doesn't even take place in our own galaxy and most certainly doesn't take place in our own timeline. There is no correlation between Earth and the Star Wars universe, beyond George Lucas having created it.
There are also some examples, in the movies, that toss that aside.
General Calrisian (spelling?) lead the attack IN SPACE on the 2nd Death Star, piloting the Millenium Falcon.
General Kenobi, fought both in space and on the ground and lead a large space/air/ground/sea force of Clone Troopers.
General Dodonna oversaw the defense of Yavin and the attack on the original Death Star in A New Hope...
I say it doesn't really matter for the characters we are playing. Our characters are the special, rare and unique heroes in our own Star Wars stories. The NPCs get to have ranks like "Admiral", but that means they are limited solely to Naval engagements/events. We get to be the "Special Operatives" that can do "Anything" and it just so happens that SpecOps soldiers use "Army" ranks in the Star Wars Galaxies.

hm... never thought of it like that, (not that I have really put that much thought into it) good point.

I had originally made a slight typo...
I meant "...it just so happens that SpecOps soldiers user "Army" ranks in the Star Wars Universe, at the time all 6 movies take place."
If you want to completely limit yourself to space operations and no longer take part in ground operations... I suppose taking a limited sphere of operations Navy Rank in the Star Wars Universe is fine with me. Just don't complain when you aren't allowed to take part in ground GCW content... hehehe...
...and do the Marines, who I understand were once an offshoot of the Navy, use Navy ranks or Army ranks? Our characters are a bit more like Marines, in that we operate in all fields of battle as first assault type troops.
(No, I am not a member of any armed forces.)

Even if the space ranks did nothing other than being able to disblay Navy Faction rank instead of ground faction rank on the ground im pretty sure that i would do whatever it takes to get my char up to the top of the Rebel Navy.

I'd like it just so we could start distinguishing the "doitformes" from the professional pilots.
"Yeah... *flex" ...I'm an Ace. Got myself a FINE VT-49, yessir."
"Uh...huh...what rank are you in the Navy?"
"Uhm...rank?"
"You had someone solo the Vette for you, didn't you? You just shot the bridge, after your pro watched you in mock pity shoot the hull harmlessly for 45 seconds, not knowing you actually had to hit a hotspot, right? Probably haven't soloed a mission, including your duties, since Tier 2, huh?"

LMAO
Oh and as it is right now, you don't need to touch the vette at all. You just need to be in the same group as the person that blows it up, and be in kessel when it blows, just for clarification.

Well sh*t, I should try that for my classes.
"Hey Professor, I know I didn't come to class except for the first day to get the syllabus that I've since used as a tissue, burned, and tossed...but I'm friends with a guy who got an A+ in your course, so I guess that means you have to pass me!"

I dont see why the same ranking system couldnt work for both factions. But seriously, i am all up on the idea of converting presituge to rank somehow. Very cool incharacter thing to do. i love the idea to tears.
qfe. TO heck with real life rankings, lets keep this inchraracter
