It would probably be fun, but consider this:
It is not there to be a PVE challenge. If it was, it would be challenging, and not have such visible AI holes. The fighters that should be protecting it are players. Now, people say "I hate space PVP" but I don't think that's really the case. Most people I talk to show up in deep space, find that nothing is going on, and leave.
The ISD has no real material reward, people assault it for 1 of 2 reasons.
1. they want to say they did it, or have something to raid in space with friends
2. they are looking for PVP
IMO the ISD should produce system messages to all Imperal Ace pilots once the rector goes down. Further messages could sound off every 10% of damage the ISD takes after that.
I'd also like to see player mannable turrets in the ISD, no reason not to have that as an alternative to people who don't particularly like flying for combat.
The same, of course, applies to the rebel station.

In real life, single fighters don't take out ships!!!
Well...
Back in the Falklands war, there was an Argentinian fighter that snuck up on the British battle group, fired a few missile, and sank the Hermes. He was an exploiter. And he did this against an entire battle group, not just one ship. The devs need to do something about those tactics.
And then there was that seaplane that torpedoed and damaged the rudder for the Bismark.
There was an Iraqi plane that nearly sunk an unready American frigate.
OK. Don't refer to real life. Real life is a bad example of what fighters can really do.

Lets not start a flame war on whether the SD should be soloable or not, because that is not what I wanted when I first replied. I am sure everyone who soloes it gets filled with pride and by all means, you should. It is a great achievement. However, all I can say is that if you are able to solo everything in game and the challenge is gone, then the game becomes boring. Happened to me, after I mastered BH I really had nothing else to look for in the game. Only had 33 skill points (at that time) by which to improve my char of which 15 were already gone in novice medic. The missions got boring as they were all the same thing even if you changed planets. The game became a big chat room for me as I really didnt have much need for money. Just a little to pay for maint and thats it. After a while I was just logging in the game just ot pay maint and logged right back out. Came back to really play after the expansion came back and then again I had something to do which was to master Pilot. All I hope is that space does not get boring as the ground did, but if you are able to solo every single ship and they dont get more creative with the quests, the same thing will happen.
By the way, I am not comparing the game to real life. That would be just plain stupid and it is true that in real life all those pilot did what was said above. However, we also have to remember that they also were extremely lucky in performing those achievements. If you asked them to do it over and over again with the same tactics I guarantee you that they would not be able to do so because human learn from past event. Sure, that the SD gets destroyed by just one pilot? Go ahead, but make it a rare event, that the pilot has to really work a lot to achieve, but to make it so that anyone who follows a list of predetermined steps can kill it in 15 mintutes is also pushing it a little. Then Tactics are no longer tactics but become an operations manual. Let the pilots develop and get better. Make them use their brains and come up with new tactics all the time. A game that keeps you in your toes all the time will also keep you interested. If SOE leaves the games so that every player can achieve every task in the game by just repeating the same steps as another player just did, will bore you everyone after a while.

My only problem with this thread is the repeated use of "jinking"... That is NOT any kind of flight term, people!
Juking? Yes. Dodging? Yes.Shucking and jiving? Less acceptable, but still better than the non-existant word jinking...
And systen alerts would be cool.
That is all.

One of the things that bugs me the most about Deep Space is the fact that I can't enter as an RSF pilot if I've already declared. Say for instance that the system messages warning of an attack on the ISD were implemented. If I was already overt and wanted to defend the ISD, I'd have to hyperspace to Royal Way or Corellia's Own, land, launch again, run my droid programs, hyperspace to Dark Force, fly the 7k to the Last Nav station and then I could finally enter Deep Space. Altogether I'm looking at a four to five minute process. On the other hand, my Imperial pilot friends would get the message, hyperspace to Durillium Sea and be in Deep Space in about a minute. I'd get left out of a lot of pvp.

Speaking of "jinking" or "juking".. what do people mean by this, exactly?
Obviously it's some style of flying to avoid enemy fire, but I'm looking for a more detailed explanation of the technique for doing this effectively.
Is it just a bunch of random zig-zagging and rolling, or is there more skill involved than that?
Thanks.

Jinking is is a series of turns, skids, pitch-ups and yaws to spoil the attacker's aim. In regards to Turrets on the SD or Vette when the turrets start firing you will begin to see bolts coming up towards your craft. To avoid them simply move out of their way... in the case of the SD when I approach I'm facing fire from at least20 guns... I just keep moving slightly left to right and up and down on my approach away from the shots... the bolts are heading for where you were, not where you are. The farther away from the guns you are the more time you have to move... the closer you are the lesser your chance of avoiding the shots.

Actually Jinking is a proper term...
Jinking
It's used quite frequently in Avaition terminology to refer to random turns, skids, pitch-ups and yaws in order to spoil an Attackers aim. In some cases some pilots use it to refer to manoeuvers to test out control surfaces, ie. rudders, elevators, flaps.

I started a thread about this problem. As it turns out Freelance pilots are not allowed to gain FP in deepspace. Why I dont know but i think the devs just skrewed up and instead of fixing the problem they just said we werent allowed to be overt in Deep Space.
