That is a VERY nice Idea! It is possible that you could stick this into an asteroid, aswell, 'spose you could include both the asteroids and parimeter stations.

And on comes the ship with the mining laser...

While great in theory, i feel that the useability of this is rather low. What i personally would rather want so see would be factional bases in space. Fly there in a multiplayer ship, send the fire-team in, control the outside, pick the team up before the base blows up. (Instant trip to the cloner for everybody who was not picked up in time...)

Eep..just realised my intial post may be taken the wrong way as sarcasm. No..I do honestly think this is a good idea. My only doubt about it would be increased lag in space..but hey, maybe they could just switch off nebulas and everything would be fine

Faction bases, eh? Well, I'd like to see both, but would rather live in space before using space to pump up the GCW...In theory, these could be introduced at the same time, though.

Well since you can't see in from outside anyway....why not make instance apartments?

So you fly up to any space station that offers apartments. You dock and load into a lobby type area (really just there to socialize with people that also have apartments in the station). It's got a droid receptionist to handle the renting and un-renting of your apartment.

Then you walk to the lift tubes, and click on it to take you to your apartment. Or right click and use the radial menu to choose to take people in your group with you. Then you load into an instanced collection of rooms that is your apartment. There could even be different sizes costing different maintainence, and each one should have some windows to see out into space.

Then you go back to your front door to take the lift back up to the lobby. Then you walk over to the space terminal or hanger enterence and take off in your ship.

I have a great idea

Why not force Eve-Online to have dogfight style combat for all ships below Battleships.

-OR-

SWG could rip more and more off of Eve

Which I think would be cool since I like eve but hate their combat

Well it seems the main idea is instances on a station, be it faction or not. I like the idea of a lobby, with the elevator sytem to go to your room, Now maybe you could have a popup box list everyone who lives on there in addition, so you could vist and see other's room. Of course you could take yourself off if you wanted.

Hell, I might even go out ona limb and suggest new station like you see on the character select screen. Dock with it, and be able to intecact with other servers.

Hmm, interact with other servers? I dunno...Starting out on the station is a great idea though.

Dragon, that idea has been tossed around quite a bit already. But thanks for your input!

I never saw why we never did start on a station. You could have it where there was a reb, imp and freelance guy there that would give you a quest. He would give you the started ship of w/e faction and send you to one of the trainers on the ground. Much better than being droped in a laggy tatoonie city.

Yea, the server thing would be a bit much though.

Since time immemorial politicians the universe over have begged and pleaded for player starports. I'd love to see SOE implement space-based population centers as extensions of player cities. Functionally they would enable launching to space from within the city-based anchor station and enable entry to the city by /comm'ing the satellite.

For flavor they could be implemented as anchoring stations on space elevator cables. Think Kim Stanley Robinson's 'Mars' books.

To limit the number of these things available you'd want to only make it available to player cities of extremely large population and make them extremely expensive to build and maintain.
