With droid programs (a mix of Imp and Neutral commands) and decent RE'd equipment I was flying around Kessel at 2322 RSF pilot without too much bother - fair enough it's not quite the same. And I've yet to do the Storm Squadron.
Two programs I suggest no one go without: capacitor overload & capacitor to shields (level 3 or 4)

I helped a guy with his SS exit mission last night and wow, that was crazy at the end. Lots of fun for two guys, but I wouldn't want to solo it.

The SS exit mission is bad, but the RSF exit mission is worse. Imagine the same scenario without Bomberstrike, no asteroids, and "friendly" AI ships that don't engage until they're hit by enemy fire.

I just completed the first tier 3 SS mission last night. It was absolutely uneventful and even sort of boring, but I loved the plot line behind it, so it was great.
I was testing out this 1300 max damage weapon I just got. With WO2 it sucks capacitor like you wouldn't believe, but it can waste an enemy ship in just a few shots.

This is the reason why SS is pretty much unsoloable u certain tier 3's n 4s you need a wingman to take out non mission crap that ganks you

Did it at the second attempt tonight. It was the straffing that I was missing.

When did i say i had a weak weapon in fact i would say the gear i used was top of the line...
1245 f/b 8 RR shield, 39 regen 1050 charge cap, 65/65/62/72 engine, 1310-1905dmg 0.32 spd 670 vs shields/armor weapon.
With the 1k mass reactor/booster etc it only comes to 30k mass.

I did it a third time this morning and made it through! I did it solo with a 39k mass tie but I changed my droid programs. I went with weap OL3, Reactor OL3, Cap OL3, and Engine OL2. Toyou guys who just said you did this with 30k mass,weak weapons andno droid programs I'm gonna call you straight up liars, there's just no way. Just to clarify some points:
I didnt say you have to solo SS but some people want to solo their pilot because its a challenge and not everyone has friends to help them. If you have some people to help you thats cool.
The advice to get a heavy tie fighter was only in case you were able to use lvl 7 components. I know that its no problem to fit lvl 5 components into a smaller ship.
You can get one tier 3 skillbox before doing the first tier 3 mission. Most people get 3222 and thats an error because lvl 7 components are very important and the heavy tie fighter is sufficient. If you didnt get one tier 3 box the mission you are doing is probably the last tier 2 mission. It doenst matter if you got enough xp, tier 3 boxes dont cost any anyways.
Getting WO3 is very important because of the bug. In fact when I do a pilot thats the first program I load into my flightcomp.
For small ships engine speed is much more important than the pyr of the engine. You can turn fast enough anyway. But theres a big difference between 70 speed and 90. A faster engine reduces the downtime between fights (especially in escort missions) and makes strafing much easier.

Actually, for Tier 3 training FOLLOWS the corresponding mission. It goes Tier 2 exit mission - Tier 3 first mission - training.

Yeah but I think what he's saying is you can build up enough XP, doing duty missions or space quests etc, until you have enough to train your first Tier 3 skill box before you do the first Tier 3 mission.

Experience is irrelevant when it comes to tier 3 skills. No matter how much you have banked, your trainer won't train you until you complete a mission for him. Four missions, four boxes.
