Thread: Why doesn't space-PvP have damage mitigation?

It might have been asked before, but I'm just wondering...

Our server is trying to organize a large Space PvP event, however a lot argue that it won't be as fun as it could be simply because of the 1-2-3 hit kill's that exist when another player fights another player in Space. I came up with the idea that coordinating with a CSR or developer to set 75% dmg mitigation to try and make the fights last longer as a temporary solution...

But, I'm here to ask TomoRainer if he could propose to the developers taht this change stays permanent, or at the very least, in Deep Space only. Personally, I believe it would make Space PvP much more fun and strategic. As it is now, everyone goes for the fastest ship possible because if you can evade one or two hits and get behind your target (very easy to do with the JSF and A-Wing), you are guaranteed to win --- yet they totally disregard weapon dmg, shield strength (a level 10 shield is as effective as a level 7 unfortunately) and all other level 10 components save engines.

With this change in place, we might see the emergence of the slow but very powerful TIE-Oppressors, B-Wings and dare I say it, POB Ships in large scale PvP in DS.

Please enlighten me on any flaws you see in this proposal because I've failed to evaluate any.

I can tell you from experience why damage is the way it is.

last night i had a dogfight with a rebel flying a JSF.

This fight went on for 15 or 20 freaking minutes. Neither of us could kill the other.
Apparetnly both of us were packign L7 guns, both of us in incredibly small, fast, hard to hit ships. A single hit from either of us WOULD NOT KILL. I hit him probably 3 times. Each time he just shunted the damage away, and i was back to square one.

The ONLY reason why this fight ended was because another imperial entered DS and managed to hit him. If someone else had not intervined we'd be there all freaking night.

EDIT:
Oh yeah, your going to see the immergance of oppressors on bria ANYWAY. If i was flying an oppressor, this fight would have been over on the first past.

Maybe it's because I'm still waking up, but for some reason this caused me to have a mental image of someone in a Nova pitching Combat Medics out the back of their ship to deflect missiles.

read other threads before you ask questions like this. this has been asked 1000 times before, and refuted 1000 times before. blanket PVP damage reduction WILL NOT WORK in a variable equipment environment, especially with the hitbox size ships we have now.

don't ask people to explain to you why, they've already done it numerous times before and it's documented. go read about it.

and i'm interested to find out exactly why your server has pilots worried 1-2 shot pvp is a problem, yet when i propose a PVP event on my server i don't hear a peep of the same sentiment.

I took a full on hit with a well-REed Borstel L8 last night on my front quarter, and survived to CTSS4 and refill my shielding. The only damage I suffered was a SMALL sliver of armor taken away from my front quarter. Once I had regenned, I could've taken another hit with no component damage.

You can survive one-hit kills, you just have to wwww...wwwwwww.....WWWWWWWWW.....WORK at it.

Heh...once again, from tonight's event, if we had damage mitigation, some of us would never die. I spent several minutes looping tight around the mining station at Dathomir as a huge group of Imps (at least a half dozen, I think it was more, but I was kinda busy at the time ) tried to kill me. They had a hard time landing any blows on me and, if there was damage mitigation, I could've hung out there all night and they would've been unable to kill me.

(Well, aside from those danged Oppressors. )

Frankly my arm is about to fall off.

I think over the last two days ive had about 3 or 4 fights that took anywhere between 10 to 20 mins to finally end.

Frankly PvP is getting STUPID. Overall were too fast, too small, have too much mass, and too hard to destroy now, all thanks to ROTW. if it gets any more stupid, im gonna swear off space pvp and never do it again. Im dead serious.

I also notice these threads seem to flare up when there's something that coaxes people to actually start flying.

"I don't want to spend 7 months collecting loot. I want everyone who's SPENT seven months collecting loot to be brought down to MY LEVEL because I'm speshul."

Just tonight I was talking with an old guildie - one of the Jedi "lookatmes" who spend time PvPing in front of starports, and was telling him why I hated ground PvP and loved space PvP.

Of course, he HATES space PvP, because on the ground, it's the PvP version of Hokey Pokey:

*blows on a kazoo* (sung to the tune of Hokey Pokey)

"You toss your saber in, you knock his punk ass down, you run right up to him, and you take the n00b to town...you do the Macro Two-Step and you shout how much ya 'pwn' - oh God, it's time to heal!!!"

Oh yeah, what fun.

This is why I'm opposed to upping YPR any more. I've actually run from a few fights lately just because I wasn't in the mood for a lengthy workout of rapid spinning, starts to get a little boring. Not just from JTL, improved awarness of good parts and better availability of engines is doing it. I used to run into lots of slow targets, with the ocassional Ace. I still see lots of bad pilots, but even a bad pilot can waste a lot of time spinning.

Hmm this is my thoguht about this, why not divide the ships in classes with diffrent damage reduction.

Light (scyk, a-wing, Jedi starfighter, Z95 and so on) get 0 Zero reduction

Medium (X-wing, Dunelizzard and so on) gets the 25% we got now

Heavy (B-wing, Kryat, Opressor and so on) get 50% reduction

Super heavy (Deciminator, YT1300, Nova and so on) gets the 75% some oen suggested

I think that would make the bigger ships more worth to use in PvP, but this is just my thoughts and i may be flawed in this.

Fein out

i love the idea that light fighters get 0% reduction, i also like the idea of leaving medium fighters at what they are now. as for 50% for b-wing etc, i'm not so sure. the b-wing could use it, and the other bomber class ships could use it, but i don't know about giving it to the oppressor. the opressor is a really strong ship as is.

POB's frankly need more than 75% imo. at 75% i could still destroy one in 2 seconds. maybe 75% then double shield and armor maximums.

That something similar to what I had suggested about modifying shield values based on chassis rather than using blanket mechanics. Heavier ships lose more maneuverability, but gain strength in defenses, where fighters lose very little capability in maneuvering and speed, but gain almost nothing in terms of defensive strength.

I like and would definately agree to this idea.

2ndly, I don't know why someone has to bring Jedi into this argument, just because I have one doesn't mean I'm a 12-year old cry-baby who unlocked his from the village but still complains because it's too frekin hard. I unlocked mine pre-pub 9, ground 28 professions and dealt with permadeath and insane xp loss, I stuck it out and have been playing this game a lot longer than you think.

Back on topic, in my experience it really is the little ships that are unbalanced... any type of dogfight is just circles and circles, while suprise attacks are over in <2 seconds (twitch based, target reactor boom instant i win button), missiles also are instant kill (space bombs) which imo should only be allowed on POB ships but that is just my opinion.

My aim is to make heavier mass (less maneuverability) ships more viable in DS pvp, because frankly all you're ever gonna see is the Greivous, A-Wing or JSF being used because of their hitboxes.
