Thread: Y-8 Alternate Use Proposal
Give the Y-8 another pair of hardpoints on the sides of the ship. The top front/bottom rear configuration makes absolutely zero sense in a purpose built mining vessel. There's no opportunity for coordination between the weapons, so you lose out on efficiency.
The transfer idea is nice, but I'd just as soon have a functioning POB mining vessel, if its all the same.
Secondly, I think that is one of the last things they intended for this ship. Its a mining ship, first and foremost.

Its a mining ship, if you put the rear/bottom turret all the way down and give it a 360 degree arc, it should be able to handle itself assuming you also have some fighter escort. Theres enough mass on that clunker to put lvl 10 equip on, so defense is not really a problem.
Well, the first idea was to allow it to have multiple mining gunners as well to allow the ship to more effectively catch stray asteroids to counter its very limited maneuverability.
I though outfitting it as a gunboat would be a fun idea, since the POB combat ships are basically justtorpedo boats with limited beam weapons for defense.
Heck, most people use an outfitted starfighter as a mining ship, why shouldn't we be able to outfit a mining ship as a combat machine?

Thats exactly what I was going to say but I didn't want to confuse what I was trying to say.
Yeah, in Homeworld it was easier, but it wouldn't be a Huge difference in SWG. Hypering out for a minute to sell to an outpost and hypering back (or going to the station to go to Kessel space) wouldn't be a huge setback right?

If you want to equip it for combat for the heck of it...I say good luck, even a novice in a Y-Wing should have no trouble taking it down.

Adding the function for starfighters to dock with the Y-8 and transfer their mined resources I can only see as a step up for what is now practically a useless ship. Even though the market for mined asteroids for Shipwrights is somewhat limited, it remains a viable method to make big money without much hassle. Even if you split up all the profit between the involved parties, if you're mining crystal or diamond asteroids, there should be plenty to share if you sell it to the right NPC trade outpost in space.
Anyone else have any ideas that adding to the Y-8 would make you want to use it, (ahem) for mining.

Then Mining Lasers and cargo holds should not be attachable to fighters. If you want to play it that way, its going to cut both ways. Combat ships fight, civvie ships transfer cargo and mine.
Look, think a little outside the box, people, its not hard. I had an idea that would make the Y-8 something more than a friggin' barge. One person suggested a company level mining vessel with the extra turets, which makes sense because the two there now and its pathetic maneuvering make it pretty useless. I thought it would be a slick idea to outfit it as a Q ship. (Look it up)
Its a sweet vessel, but its pretty close to useless as it is right now. I'm just venting ideas. Besides, the Decimator and the other POB combat ships don't overly impress me with the two turrets and three torpedo tubes. They aren't all that fabulous to begin with.
The Y-8 is a mining ship, not a combat ship. Adding more turrets will only make it a PvP ship which its not made for.
I fly the sucker solo, and when i get a group of npc's attacking me, i just jump into one of the turrets and wait for them to get into my sights. I am not dealing with another player who knows what my fire arcs are. Npc's don't target your front or your center or the bottom. No, they randomly fly around and get wasted when they get in range. My sheild i have on it, the elite shields infact, are so strong, i can sit in one spot all day long on in the majority of space and not worry about being shot down.
To make the Y-8 able to be all it can be: First, the elite mining laser needs to gather in resources better than the tractor beam, alternate to that, make a second pilot controlled turret in front, just like the one that is there now, so that you can have the elite mining laser and a tractor beam combo. Second, all asteroid resources need to be fixed, and have more than just one stat on them. It is making any item that calls for it only half as good as it can and should be.Third, the cockpit view needs to be able to be turned off for the pilot. Fourth, the mining bugs that POB ships all have need to be fixed. That way you can actually sit still and still mine an asteroid instead of having to be at 600+ engine speed.
The Y-8 doesn't need a major revamp, it just needs a few bug fixes and some numbers tweeked to make itthe ship i am positive it was intended to be. Right now, it is a three legged horse, able to get around but won't be winning any races.
I would very much agree that the cockpit frame needs to be turned off when piloting.
Some of the fixes discused in the dev chat would work well (and I don't think it'll be turned into a PvP ship... it's too darn slow...)
Right now, I mostly use mine as storage for the stuff that I mine with my Krayt.
