If you fit the Y-8 with 2-3 Y-8 mining lasers then give the escorts the tractorbeams you could setup a production line.

Oooo, now that's an idea!

I don't understand this talk of mining lasers not working in the top turret. In my ship I have an elite in the top turret, tractor in the front, and defense cannon in the back, and we can haul in a lot of resources in very short order. If you're within about 150m from the medium chunk when it breaks apart, you can pretty much just wave the tractor-beaming nose around and vacuum up the small chunks and get started on another medium chunk.

It requires minimal coordination between Pilot and Gunner, too. Just tell them that when You're facing the asteroid, they shoot it, and when you're facing a medium chunk they shoot it at 150m, and that's the last of the instruction needed. Beyond that you don't need to type/say a single thing and can mine all day. Whenever the pirates get too annoying the pilot climbs into the lower defense turret and starts blasting away. Tell the mining gunner that when the ship stops and turns towards nothing, it's time to blast pirates for a bit.

With a little bit more coordination you can be blasting two medium chunks at a time and sucking up resources like nobody's business. I put my starfighter-miners away once I started using this method.

One important thing is to get an engine with a good Y/P/R and decent speed. With Engine Overload 3 you'll be very manueverable, if a little slow to stop in turns. I'm working on loading up with all Elite equipment at the moment, then I'll be a mining beast of the stars.

I love the idea of docking (on any POB ship) and transgering cargo. It can also have other handy uses outside of mining.

and why can't I put things inside my cargo hold before I take off?

Is it wrong to not tell them if they don't ask?

Bump

I saw the chat transcript saying 2 more additional forward gun mounts are planned for the Y-8. Though I have to say...I think I'd rather put my idea into to place. No real way to get around the agility of the smaller ships being more efficient for mining IMO.

With a Y-8 and 2 more gun mounts I guess you wouldn't really bother with a tractor beam. Would require a ton of coordination on the gunners and pilot to be able to tractor rocks in. But with all mounts having elite mining lasers that thing could probably haul in quite a lot. As long as the lack of a tractor beam doesn't slow it down, I think they'll be a good addition.

Though I'd also like the ability for starfighters to transfer their cargo.

Any comments?

Are you asking why shouldn't you, or why can't you currently in the game load things into your cargo hold?

Why shouldn't you?

Well...instead of transferring in space, it would be easier just to trade when you both land. Or if docking ever works, you could just dock with their POB ship, walk over and hand it to them.

Currently you can't load things into your cargo hold. Probably because it wouldn't really have any function for mining asteroids. Except if you accidentally landed and unloaded a mining run's worth of cargo that you intended to sell to a NPC. But honestly, thats a hard mistake to make, and you could probably make more by selling it off the bazaar or to a SW than to a NPC trade outpost.

Thanks for the feedback!

It does OK at mining with the laser in the pilot gun, but a fighter still works better.

I would very much agree that the cockpit frame needs to be turned off when piloting.

Some of the fixes discused in the dev chat would work well (and I don't think it'll be turned into a PvP ship... it's too darn slow...)

Right now, I mostly use mine as storage for the stuff that I mine with my Krayt.

Shove a 90-115 speed engine in there with a decent reactor and RO4/EO4 and come back with the results. Really, you're right, no POB ship is remotely PvP capable right now, Elite components, and even Tier 5 components, blow goats.

i think letting other ships transfer what they mine to the y-8 through docking is a great idea and I would love to expand on it. anyone with master smuggler piloting a ship (regardless of pilot faction) would be able to disable any y-8 ship and steal its cargo by docking with it. here is how it would work. for the fighters to be able to transfer asteroid minerals to the y-8 they would all have to be grouped with the y-8 so they could come to its aid when it was attacked. once the y-8 was disabled the smuggler would have a special space ability granted with the master smuggler box called "force dock" or something similar that would force the the y-8's cargo into the smugglers ship. there would be a few restrictions though. the smuggler would have to be in a POB and it would take somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20 seconds to transfer all the cargo once docked. within space sectors that have police forces use of the "Force dock" would immediately summon 5 tier four security fighters (corsec, royal security) to attack the smuggler vessles. only smugglers in POB ships would be able to fire on the y-8 or it's convoy or the security forces, preventing their friends in fightersfrom helping them. This would be great for everyone because it would actually give smugglers some content, and it would make space mining more exciting.

You have grouped grinding, why not group mining. What a great idea mate.

Lets hope that the devs see this thread and pay attention.

Intersting ideas.
Why not also petition the Devs to make Mining Droids, they would only be usable on a Y-8 (special storage pods)?
Perhaps they would all have a class I laser and a small cargo hold (100 space), and need to dock with the Y-8
to offload their ore. Used in conjuntion with the onboard mining lasers and tractor beam this would be a serious
mining ship, as opposed to only somewhat adequate as it is now (but effective with good crew and lot's of practice).
Something else for Droid Engineers to make also, maybe up to 4 variations with increasing mining efficiency (speed)?

docking with POBs is a good idea, it would also make things more interesting in PVP, if you had 3 PoBs and once gets disabled you dock two of them on it and you could say "Extend" your shields from both around the whole group(giving an effective 18000 shields nowdays) and send over shipwrights to do repairs.

Actually I had that as an idea for putting flight formations back.

Having a close formation would strengthen the ships shields as they overlap.

Some sort of offensive formation would be nice too, but I couldn't think of one that would really work.

Just something besides the follow-the-leader string you get when using /follow.

Besides it would add to immersion as well.

OT though
