Thread: Rolling a Starsider Pilot

To expand a little on Hayln's point #3. There were a TON of people in the RP community RPing pilots, everyone RP'd this as a Star Wars setting long before ships, and when we finally got the chance to "live" that RP. The community found a nice level playing field up there, and alotof the samepeople that were tired of the PvP attitude on the ground and the smack talking that went with it.

Forcing people to put thier actual skills into play instead of thier builds made for a competative, but friendly atmosphere. The fact that even the best pilots can get snuck up on and one shotted when they are in DS with 20 NPC's on them and just forgot to hit "Z" for a few seconds...leveled out the trash talk and kept people chuckling at themselves at how dumb they were not to keep thier SA up (yeah, me again the other night )

It is not all the RP community, but the RP community had a jump on setting up events and coordinating things of this scale, which helped a lot. Most, if not all, the big events are run by RPers that have run a lot of other event types. People like Resha (spelling), Ramona, Kitten, Naithen, and those on the reb side I do not know as well, are all a big part of the RP scene on SS and have generated a lot of respect for events they run. Putting some of thier eventsin space even dragged a few people up that would not normally try it, simply because it was an RP event these people were running.

That and our fabulous reputation, cocky, fighter-jock like attitudes, winning personalities, and secsi dialoge attracted the others. Oh, and I guess the fact that we *also* have smelly, uncouth rebel pilots to shoot at added to this :-D

The organization of our coordinators has gone a long, long way toward keeping things lively and attracting new interest in PVP. Ramona has a long mailing list she keeps updated on both our weekly events and any spontaneous PVP that pops up. If you're trying to get the space game jumpstarted on your server, I'd highly recommend doing something similar.

Also, I think one of the keys that allowed us to reach critical mass was all this organization began back when JTL was still new and exciting to a lot of people. Drawing them in to group events at that point gave us some incredible turnouts right away (the first big event I was in had about 40 people on a side--I'm not sure I've ever been in an event more frantic or pulse-pounding), and I think once people saw how much fun they were, it wasn't hard to convince them to come back next week.

That kind of awareness is going to be tricky to try to build now, but if you've got a dedicated group and solid organization, I'm sure it can still be done. Also, with the potential for so many new players joining JTL with the release of RotW, you might be in a good position to take advantage of the renewed interest in space as a launching platform for more regular participation.

I'll see if I can get some of the people who started things up on Starsider to post here with their experiences and advice. I'd love it if other servers could build this kind of participation in space as well.

My first major combat was what hooked me...though my best memory was the battle at the Endor space station. I rolled in behind a TIE and opened up on him. My first shot went wide, second hit him solid, dropping shields and armor...and then a TIE laid into my X-wing's aft. I squeezed one more burst that blew up my target, then rolled away and boosted back towards the RS X-wings

coming my way and watched them shoot the TIE off my tail. It was probably the most heart-pounding, adrenaline-rushing, Star Wars moment I've ever had playing this game.

So my advice to you: make sure the people who come enjoy it. That's probably the most important thing if you want to build a solid community of pilots on your server.

For me the best part in space is leading 20+ Imperials against 20+ Rebels, from the first contact until the last Rebel has been downed. The Imperials on Starsider work really well together. I issue out orders and strategies before and during combat and they all seem to catch on really quick to what I have in mind. It has built us Imperials quite a reputation in space which helps to bring new faces to both sides. You haven't PvP'd in space until you have done it with 30+ pilots.

You made a little mistake there. I fixed it for you.

Starsider has many guilds that are very involved in space. PvP is mature, fellow pilots are friendly, and RP is abundant. Space is generally more fun on Starsider.

I am a part of the Sunrunner RP community. THere are a lot of us mixing in between the l33t d00ds. I hate to leave my friends. More importantly lol I hate to lose all of my good components. I am 2 level 6 engines away from my version of Tomo's uber engine. All 70s PYR but mass still over 8k so far. Plus all of my houses of stored stuff. /sigh So It would be a new toon with crappy post nerf loot... BUt, hey then I don't have to feel bad about any Oops decay. Imperials lok out... Trouble is coming... Im your huckleberry...

What? this isn't the Starsider boards anymore?

No honestly, Starsider is great. Space battles are a real adreanline kick. Though i am a roleplayer I am not one of the regular event coordinators like Gwreng, Ramona/Resha or Naithan despite the fact that i try to coordinate the rebels sometimes so most of the praise really belongs to them

Without them it would not be possible but of course the friendly yet competing attitude of the players and the devotion of each pilot and shipwright definately add to the experience.

The imperials tend to have the better tactic and equipment though but the rebel leadership is doing their best to improve

Nevertheless, both sides convience by their friendly attitude and willingness to learn

I'd really recommend that you try it out even if you just come in a starter ship. We had people who did that and as far as i know they still had fun. Regular space battles (with briefing)start around 6pm. If you contact either Gwreng (rebels), Naithan (imperial) or Ramona/Resha i am sure they can point you to the right people or give you the necessary info.

Our official side is fightercommand.futuredroids.com but quite a lot is handled ingame too

Hearing about all this great stuff, I've noticed the Privateers are left out. I don't have JTL yet, but will soon, and I already have an imp and reb on other galaxies, so I was thinking of starting a privateer on Starsider. My question is, what does Starsider have to offer to the "neutral" crowd?

Well, declare with either crowd and fly there, we are pretty GCW centric. But I understand some others are doing some smuggling RP and combat stuff in space as well. Blockade runs and the like. I don't remember who was running those though, sorry.
