I have debated and debated on whether or not to roll a SS character, and I still may, but first I wonder if any of you active SS pilots can give me some insight into how you were able to foster such an active space scene? I am in a rebel pilots guild on Sunrunner that is about 12 strong and we fly regularly. Rarely to run into other overt pilots. Any tips? I would love to have 2 "pilot" servers.
I see two reasons for Starsider's success as a "pilot" server. No, three. Maybe four.
1.) Well-organized, regular, epic events: That's what really got Starsider started for PvP. The Rebel and Imperial leaders worked together to throw some really big events (like 30+ pilots per side) which had story and purpose. They were well-advertised so a lot of people knew about them, thus a lot of people showed up.
2.) Space-based guilds: Several guilds on both sides of the fence started focusing heavily on space and putting up good pilots. If you have a Rebel pilot guild, you're halfway there--there needs to be opposition, though. And even if though they are the "opposition", you need to be both working with them and being sociable. Traditional rivalries aren't good in space in the sense that they are for the ground. A lot of pilots enjoy Starsider's space PvP because there is a completely different attitude about it. Instead of smack talk, there's friendly tells, like "Want to go again?" and "Nice shooting!"
3.) Roleplayers: Another huge aspect of success in space is RPers. They add what some may just deem "fluff" for the events--background information, stories, news releases, and so on. That "fluff", though, is really important; it sets the tone for the events. Plus, a lot of pilots tend to stay in-character because being in-character makes sense in a combat situation in space. If the game plays like we think space should play and is just as fast-paced, pilots tend to get into the mindset of a pilot in a combat situation.
4.) Server reputation: Starsider's gained the reputation of both the RP and the pilot server. Why? Well, RP has kind of been Starsider's claim from the beginning, but it wouldn't have continued if so many people didn't RP in some way, shape, or form. We also gained the repuation as the pilot server by simply having lots of people in space and, just as importantly, giving the impression and getting the word out that we have a lot of flying.
Now, don't think things are all kittens and roses (Though we have one Kitten!

) for Starsider's PvP. There are disagreements, sometimes within a faction rather than between factions; there are a few jerks who will camp hyperjump points and kill pilots who are loading in; there are occassionally smack talkers; there are people who will win at any cost. But the majority of the pilots on Starsider are, in my opinion, good people to fly with and against. I love the atmosphere of starfighter pilots and space-based PvP.
EDIT: Oh, and we have the name of a capital ship as our server name...that helps, too!

(Yes, the
Starsider is a Dreadnaught. Speaking of which, we should see our namesake somewhere in-game...)
