Thread: The Z key 'target enemy player macro which can't be done phenomenon'

imo it's too much effort to hit keys. you use keyboard and mouse? any chance you can map Z to a mouse button? i know my mouse has 5 buttons on it. that way you don't have to think about it, you just react when you hear the beep.

plus you gotta think, you got the radar (which players did and still do use effectively to determine if players are around, yes, even in a furball in DS), you got a warning beep, you also got a box around the target (can be used to spot things that shouldn't be there) where do you draw the line between notification and just rewarding being oblivious?

i don't know if i really want a scrolling marquee across the screen saying "warning warning player approaching!!" i dunno, imo the beep is as far as it should go. in the past i argued that tools players had before (radar, sound, visuals) were enough, i still think they were, but the beep should be it imo.

/sigh Read my post before you reply ok? It isn't hard

I just said thats what I do and it works fine. In fact I gave you a pretty damn efficient description of my process for scanning for enemies while I'm overt.

I said nothing about annoying red text. As for Radar, I utilise it along with various other methods.

Fine..forget I ever said anything. As for patronizing me with suggestions on where to map my keys, stop there. I made it clear as day that I'm capable of spotting my enemies as soon as is technically possible.
Also, natural situational awareness goes a long way.

I'll put it in plain English. The idea was to make things more EFFICIENT, not because I 'couldn't handle it...

Now Janu, if macros could be abused like that..then fine, It'd be more trouble than it's worth.
I just don't see why griefing style macros like the 'launchmissile' one is possible when a constructive one like I suggested isn't. Thats all.

And no, 'launchmissile' is not needed to make an enemy aware of you in pvp. If anything, if they're on the ball, they'll actually chaff that non-existent missile and therefore waste ammo.

Also Quad, I'm not talking about your mouse here...we're talking generically. Not all mouses/mice? have 5 buttons. I wish you'd read my previous posts before posting. I said in plain englishthat I scanthe radar..

Meh..forget it.

You've misinterpretted this as me looking for advice. I was just looking for an oppinion on a suggestion which I thought may improve the efficiency of targetting during pvp.

I meant Quad. Sorry, its late,I'm touchy and now doing what I'm complaining about. I'll be more attentive next time /sleeps
It isn't anything personal Quad, but I just feel a bit demeaned here. I don't need people suggesting me to do things I didn't -ask- for

yeah no kidding, i didn't mean any offense, nor was i patronizing. in addition, i read your post, i know exactly what you are attempting to say, that it's a hassle to hit Z all the time. i'm telling you, don't have to physically hit Z, it's much easier to map it to a button that's literally on your hand the entire time you are playing. i don't know how many buttons your mouse has, which is why i asked. plus, even if you could macro it, it would be a bad idea because what happens when there's 3 enemies? it would cycle?

so the next part of this is "well maybe there should be something different yadda yadda yadda." i'm saying, no, let's stop dumbing things down, it's not that bad especially if you put the button at your fingertips.

Dont take this the wrong way , but, what kind of combat pilot regularly whacks the K key on his keyboard to target an enemy player?

An ace will have it set up for their joystick.

For example, I have 4 thumb buttons on the top of my stick laid out as follows -

1 2

3 4

1- Countermeasures

2- Missiles

3- Target nearest enemy player

4- Booster

With, this set up all my combat commands are under the control of my right hand (trigger = blasters) with the throttle and other target buttons under my left hand. This has been my set up since JTL beta and it is so intuitive that I dont actually have to think about hitting any button while flying.

With the purchase of a new joystick at the start of the year I had to do a little thinking about the 4 top buttons and came up with this arrangement of them under my thumb, as the buttons are all the same size it allows me to hit the most used buttons without firing of my missiles of CM by accident!!

And you implying that to be a "ace" pilot you can only use joysticks? As i know quite a few who'd disagree with that.

Well I never saw any pilot in the Star Wars films waving a mouse about in zero G so yeah to be an SW Ace you need a joystick, and a couple of earplugs to shut that dumb old man up so you can concentrate.

If you use a mouse there is really no point making one of its buttons perform the function of Z, unless you have some madmouse with about 20 buttons on it, and that to me would just be another keyboard (for keyboard read target for errant beer spilt in adrenaline frenzy) and i have enough of them.

Ummm...yeah. Even as an avid joystick fan, I can tell how stupid of a statement that was.

By the way, Logitech makes a great gaming mouse, specifically for gamers! Lotsa buttons at a great price.

don't most meece have 5 buttons noadays anyway? that's as many as i use on my stick really.
well, i guess that's a lie, i use the other 4 or 6 enough to map them to the stick...

i think the mice people are nuts, but i've fought against plenty of them and didn't notice any impairments...

Joysticks are over-rated in JTL, IMHO

I cant fky without mine in x-wing alliance or rogue squadron etc. but for some reason a mouse and keyboard just works better for me in JTL.

Like rapax, I just mapped target nearest player to my spacebar so I cant fail to miss hitting it every few seconds.

And I knopw that happens, as I've taken out players who are paying more attention to the npc they are after than their surroundings.....
