Thread: The Z key 'target enemy player macro which can't be done phenomenon'

Quick question. I know we can't macro the z key to auto spam for us so we can concentrate on flying while the macro takes care of looking out for any prospective baddy players. However, do you think it could be suggested to the devs that they make this possible?

Does anyone really want it made possible?

Your oppinions please sent to me on a stamp addressed post card with a $200 tip or...just posted here

I think I'd find a macro like that annoying.

Anything that will end up switching targets so I stand a chance of no longer tracking the thing I'm working on would be painful.

plus, once you get accustomed to listening for "the beep" it becomes such second nature that nothing else is really required. nowadays i don't even remember hearing the beep anymore, it happens and my thumb automatically hits the button on my joystick for "next enemy player" and i have to actually think to myself "did i just hear the beep?"

i'd rather have the devs work on testing and eliminating the sporadic inconsistancies with the warning beep rather than have them spend time implementing a way to recursive certain keyboard commands.

"the beep"?

I must have never heard it. What is this beep you speak of. Is ita warning when an enemy player enteres the system or am I way off?

To the OP..... A better idea to useing such a macro is to just map target closest/next enemy player to an easier to reach key/joystick button.

The beep is good. What I should say is 'nearest enemy player'. Hmm ok. Thanks for the input

When I jump to DS, I hit 'closest enemy player' right away. When I'm happy no imp players are in the area, I target an npc and for it. But during the whole battle, I'm hitting 'closest enemy player' every few seconds to make sure I'm not being snuck up on. And I knopw that happens, as I've taken out players who are paying more attention to the npc they are after than their surroundings.....

Now I know this will sound curmudgony, but I'd really rather see recursive macros left as much as possible out of space. I never did like the fact that they were put into SWG in the first place. I know that's a lost battle and all, but...

From a pilot standpoint, watching your scanners constantly is part of what makes an Ace an Ace.

I wasn't even that fond of your booster macro...guess I just don't want to see space infected by all that stuff.

One of these days I'll probably try PvP again in DS, and when I do, I'll try not to react to any players I pick up if I can afford to ... I thought of this a few seconds too late last time. Of course, I was blown to bits anyway, but what do you expect in a heavy ship on a laggy connection?

My Belkin spams z automatically for me..heh...

But yeah..the beep when any player gets within your radar range is useful...they really just have to make it a different sound from the beep when you lock on to something.

Mind you after the beep, I press 'Z'...
If no target comes up, I press 'L'...
and if I lock onto something, I type "/duel".

I agree with you, myself. I don't tap Z religiously, but I'll /who every couple of minutes, and I know that beep well. The instant it goes off, I drop to PvP maneuvering speed and go evasive till I get a bead on the bad guy.

All very well and good but you can't afford to only tap it every couple of minutes on starsider.

This is how I go about it.

I am flying overt -all- the time bare in mind too.
So I hyper into a system, lets take DS. I'm spamming z even before I finish loading in. Now if I see someone, I'll engage them. Any Imperial caught too close to Freedom station upon hypering in is probably going to be spamming z too or possibly camping.

Ok, so lets say nothing is there. I'm pressing z every two/three seconds and if after I type /who and I see peple are there and not anonymous, I'm spamming it more or less all the time while scanning radar and hunting them down to get a frendly/hostile I.D on them.

Ok, so if I find them..I attack them or if they're friendly, I'll extend a group invite.

Lets pretend I havn't found anyone and noone is showing up on /who. Most Starsider pilots will be anonymous I've found unless they -want- attention [which is fun to do at times]. However, next protocol is while I'm scouting DS and pressing z, I'm actually alternating it with the Y button - Cycling through every craft in range. Now if I see a Corvette or Rebel npc with it's shields down or coming down, or if it looks like it's been hit by a player [npc attack npcs tend to have no armour and 100% shields because they survive a lot longer against each other] 'll check out those areas.

So ok..onto the next stage. If everything checks out and I find nothing, I'll start blowing stuff up etc while pressing z less often and checking /who everynow and then.

The thing is, the above ^ gets tedious and any regular pvp'er will know that. All I'm saying is that a macro which'd repeat and target anyone who came into range would be much more efficient. I'd also hotkey the /dump command so I could dump the macro when a player came into range and then would take over manually to see if they had any friends with them.

I've never been caught unaware in pvp and the spamming of the z button is fine, but I'm just saying it could be so much more efficient you know? It'd save me sending tells to peple I catch unaware like "you may want to press z" before I kill them too. In Deepspace I'll outright attack people as it is decayless, but personally I'm a bit nicer when it is in decayable space and will try warning them before I come in. If other people had this macro too...they may live longer and would save a lot of hassle after/before I kill them.

As for the beep, well it's good but the beep for 'friendly player targetting you' is exactly the same. Maybe if they changed the tonebetween the two it'd be better?

What I'm saying is, hey I can handle it as it is. More than enough of you have seen me prove this plenty of times before, however...I'm just making suggestions to make things possibly a little more efficient.

Speaking of macros.
If you fly with a wingman a lot or just doing those boring escort missions. This you might like...

/tesc
/pause 0.2
Forming up on %NT.
/follow
/pause 2
/boosterOn (er..I forget the exact command for this)
/pause 1
/boosterOff

now to use this you have to program in the alias of your wingman/escorted ship
say your wing man's name is Bob type in:
/alias tesc /target Bob
or your escorting a medium freighter:
/alias tesc /target medium

what happens when you activate macro..
You automatically target the escort/wingman.
Start flying toward him.
On comms whether is spatial or group, announce your intentions.
The booster part is optional but in some of the battles i've been i've been separated far enough from my wing man to require boosters.

Part of the fear is macroable PvP fighters. Before you joke, let me assure you, I've seen some crazy stuff get macroed. The more commands we know to throw in macros, the greater the risk of automation becomes. The real fun starts when someone has a Z tabber macro and an autofire macro for his missiles.Human coordination is only needed to turn the ship.
