I've edited this FAQ and the other general FAQ to reflect the faster buffing time that is now common. I've also revised the answers on the effect of instrument and song choice. The devs practically wrote that language for me -- those are their answers to questions I propounded to them. But since it doesn't work that way in practice, I guess it's time to revise it. Let me know what you think.

Q. How can I use /setperform with the nalargon or ommni box, since those most be targeted at all times?

A. The buff works with these instruments. The key is to target the listener before you start playing; make sure the listener is /listening before you start playing; type /setperform; then target the nala or ommni and start playing. You don't need to keep the listener targeted once you've typed /setperform.

I haven't checked for a long time, but I didn't think a person could /listen if you weren't playing.

The safest way to do this is /setperform NAME so you don't lose the targeted instrument. And if you are quick, between flourishes or at least between ticks, you can select target, /setperform, and then target the instrument before it stops you from playing. The check fortarget onthe instrumentis a flourish or when you get XP.

Wow what a great thread. Having recently come back to the game after quitting for almost a year, this whole musician buffing thing was news to me and I had no idea how it worked.

Ready to give it a try now. Thanks for all the info!

The biggest issue here has got to be Musician self-buff. Doctors are able to buff themselves AND make considerable amount of money buffing others. Musicians are like the starving artists of the game, unable to make a decent wage and unable to do anything for themselves.

Yes, Musicians should deffintley be able to buff themsleves. I'm most of the way through rifelman and musician right now, and it was a VERY nasty shock when I found out.

Q. Does the buff work anywhere?

A. No. In theory, it works only in camps, theaters, hotels, or cantinas; "cantinas" include private homes, PA Halls, City Halls, and player cantinas. I've read unconfirmed reports of players buffing in starports, but I've been unable to do this myself. As for player-owned buildings in Player Cities, please see the next three questions.

Hi there a bit new to the proffesion myself here but I just wanted to point out that once when I tried to buff in a basic camp it wouldnt work. But when a Multi-Person camp kit was used it worked fine. Dont know if you might want to clarify that

Unusual....I've buffed fina in camps of all levels. It has been a while though. I'll have to test.

You can buff in a camp, and you can heal mind wounds in a camp, but you cannot heal BF in a camp.

healing BF in a camp never was an ability we had. Maybe in beta, but definately not in live. There were nasty rumors that bf healed in ranger camps, but that never proved to be true.

BTW the reasoning behind this was back at the beginning people used to actually take up novice medic and novice entertainer to heal their wounds. The bf was added to get them to come back to the city every once in awhile.

Kinda funny thinking back to the days when people used to invest the skill points in these novices, where now people just buy another account.

Yup, we've never had the ability to heal BF in a camp, at least not since the game went Live. I was an entertainer in beta too, and again I don't recall every being able to heal BF. The idea is to give people a reason to return to the cantina.

Periodically rangers and scouts float the idea of permitting some BF healing in certain camps -- perhaps limited BF healing (up to half of BF, say) in a Ranger (but not Scout) camp, for example. There's quite a bit of support among Musicians for such an idea, if it could both preserve the cantina and allow us to get out more.
