Thread: What to do with the 3rd profession afk SW1 slitherhorn players?
I don't mind switching songs down as long as once in a while we get to switch up![]()
My big pet peeve is all the newbies who are stopping by to experiment with entertainer because their main server is down. They literally never show up again after their home server comes up
I now find out how long they plan to stick around and if it's not more than a day they get to dance and that's it![]()
That saidI always help out the new performers who plan to be around for a while even the third profession ones - but i'm in a small town so adding to the group adds fun for everyone - nothing like having master creature handlers displaying their pets while playing - though some of the big creatures haven't learned yet to keep the right beat
And at least all of our third profession ones do it to have fun - they know that they'd heal much faster if they just listened to me and didn't play. And most of them tip me anyways![]()
In our town though it can get lonely so everyone stops by the cantina for chatting, help, advice, etc. We don't have a huge problem with afk among the regulars and the terminally afk'd disappear rather quickly since they don't get tipped. We have an equally rowdy bunch of third professions that love to dance (personally i don't know why makes me motion sick) - so some nights it's more like a party in the cantina than a performance![]()
I was in Coronet today for a bit and can understand now how everyone is having income problems and irritations with entertaining and musician - there were two groups one lower, one higher, both huge plus tons of customers. It was impossible to see what was going on except for the people right next to you. For me that was other band members - not a big deal since i was just visiting and xping - but for the regulars i can't imagine that it is a lot of fun to do this day in and day out. There was also some jerk who kept begging for the higher group to come down 3 songs just so he could play with them - very disruptive.
I would like to thank all the master's and advanced musicians out there -I receive so much help from everyone-including playing down for me,free training, instruments, advice, and support -I am now halfway up the musican tree and try to pass on the same to all musiciansI come in contact with.
Coronet is packed cheek to jowel like jawas at a swap meet.
My group has tended to play in the hotel, especially now that many are master musician or master entertainer. Hopefully we can bring in the crowd too. I can wait for the crowd tho, it's only a month in I'll see what it's like in two more and get back to you.
AFK-entertainers, I'll disband 'em in a heartbeat with no second thought. There are people who worked hard to get master while the macrobots hit a key and go to work. Oh, and I cant decide which is worse. Waltz or SW1. Everytime I hear them, I get this urge to shove ice picks in my ears.

I really haven't done anything but be a Musician for awhile now ("awhile" given the amount of time SWG has been out
). I recently have spent all of my gaming time in Cantinas on newbie worlds (mostly in Coronet on Corellia). And I play on Eclipse, which sorta has two peak times due to it being an East Coast server while carrying the "unofficial UK" flag.
I've seen a good range of social dynamics during this time. The overriding element, the primary personality type, the very reason why I know that everything else I do is secondary to Music, is the casual coolness I've seen in most other Entertainers.
The rage shown in some forums (not here) against AFK macroers has not translated in the same volume into the game. The vitriol against non-tippers neither. This is a reality of all MMOGers, but is very prevalent now because it hits so close to home for me (never really cared this much about an MMOG series of abilities before... though it's little wonder that I come from an EQ Bard and a UO one before it
)
I've found that most of the best entertainers to be around are really enjoying the heck out of the system first, with the rewards garnered from it being somewhat secondary. Oh, there are the grinders, the macroers, those who just want to multibox their CHer while occasionally hitting a long flourish sequence. There are repeat customers who don't say boo, much less tip. I've met really friendly people who'll go out of their way to help folks out, and be AFK for 10 hour stretches. I've met folks who do nothing but create awesome sequences of flourishes who'd step over themselves to race ahead of everyone else. There are even occasional idiots who come in, complain loudly that entertainers are a useless class, while they reduce their mind wound and battle fatigue
But it doesn't really bother me, partly because they're in the minority and partly because finally, a game with a serious budget and a series consideration on it's playability has put serious time towards non-combat pursuits and how real people would actually fill their time interacting with it. AC2 had a good music system to, I just couldn't get into the rest of the game.
Anyway, my attitude is very casual.

You're right jedi, they add more exp. And I don't kick afkers from the group when business is real slow. If it's empty then everyone can tell that I'm the only one at my desk and the three hot dancers are macro bots. I'm not splitting tips with them at all, and by that I mean no one's tipping them.
However, at a certain point, afkers don't add atmosphere to the cantina. We want it to be pleasant so people will enjoy coming and enjoy paying us. (like that ice cream shop I worked at, boss lady told me on the first day, we don't sell ice cream, we sell enjoyment. people are not paying for icecream, they are paying for your smiling face and the ambiance of the store. they can get 5 gallons of ice cream for 50 cents at the jumbo mart and they pay way more than that to come to my store and shoot small talk with me. BTW I got lots of tips at the ice cream store too, and our store policy was to return the tips and tell people that we can't accept them. That's usually when they forced me to take money from them when the manager's back was turned.)
AFK drone is like baskin robins highschool teen ager that doesn't want to be at work. I hate 31 flavors cause of the employees, not the product.
Well, tips aren't that important to me (BTW, right now, even if someone tips, it's NOT auto divided anyway), XP is more important, thus AFKers is not that big problem when they playa good song (not a SW1)anyway

Worked Hard? Are you kidding me?
You are socializing when you not AFk, to me it's having fun (not working hard)...
Stop the AFK-hate, it's senseless.
I mean, I enjoy chatting with other people while playing music anyway, so it's not a problem on my part to AFK all the time, BUT I AFK sometime too!

And, do you think Guests would really Tip a AFKer ratherthan someone who is chatting with them?
Nope, I don't think so...
Couldn't care less for tips, really.
You talking bout 100 or even 500cr tips while some architects out there have 5.000.000cr on their bank account.

No, I know they don't and that's what I meant when I said I wasn't splitting tips with them. I meant that the patron was not saying "i've got 500 to tip and I should tip everyone even the afk"
I wasn't clear there and my word choice I can see caused a confusion. We agree on that point.
As musicians, we've all talked and played with people forhours on end, so getting a sort of "band" together isn't that hard. 3 of my friends and I were tired of playing sw1 and rock at Theed tonight, so we went ahead over to Keven to play our own stuff. Yeah, it wasn't as big of a band, and yeah, there was a smaller crowd and less exp, but at this point in the game, anything is better than playing the same song for days on end
Also realize that cantinas are big enough for 2 bands. Let people who are under novice entertainerto form their own group
Even at my relatively inexperienced level -- I totally understand the pain that Rock and SW1 offer (I actually don't particularly like Rock and think SW1 can be okay in a nice small band)... but there are folks who are serious about the entertainment business who can nonetheless only spend so much time due to work, wives, or what have you.
For myself, I'd like people to offer an answer when someone asks, "Is there room in the band?" A polite no is a GOOD ANSWER -- it says "No, the group is full," or "no, we're a professional gig," or "sure, but we're only playing higher end songs for awhile."
Communication is key and if someone politely tells me that folk's too low level for 'em (let alone the rest) I'm gunna happily listen in for a bit then go find another place to play so one day I can join that gig.
Just remember, not all SW1 people are 3rd profession types.
Thanks!

I am a 3rd profession musician, so to speak. My primary class is armorsmith, but I'm am serious about master musician. I saw some skilled musicians performing as a team in the Theed Cantina and was inspired by what they did. Idecided my guild needed people capable of entertaining on that level. Whenever I come to play, I put on my entertainer related tag to try and convey why I am there. Have faith, there are a few of us who really want to be good
