If I'm flying around being an RP geek (and not in a MP ship), I usually fly around in 1st person.
I gotta ask -- what does roleplaying have to do with first person vs. third person view? Besides, this is an MMORPG, we should be RPing all the time. =) Are you saying you don't RP when your on a mission or in PvP combat?
I've never been able to use third person view, personally, no matter what I'm doing. Gotta be first all the way. Besides, it's more immersive that way. =)

When I fly, I'm first person all the time. Just can't get the hang of it otherwise. I might force myself to change though if all the hard-core flyboys use third-person - don't know if it gives you a sight advantage or not (hence the question).
When I'm on the ground, I use first-person about 50% of the time, especially indoors. Just seems much more immersive.

I have the X-45, which is the precursor to the X-52, and I wouldn't play any flight sim type game without it. Beside the greatly enhanced immersion, some fairly straightforward button programming gives you every command you need right at your fingertips - hard to beat8 buttons, 4 HATs anda mode switche that lets each of those do up to3 different things (or even more if you use the shift function from one of the stick buttons). Ever since I used my first HOTAS system, I just haven't been able to go back to using just a stick, even one with a throttle.

Logitech Wingman Strike Force 3D here.
I love the force feedback, but I have to recalibrate FAR too often.
Thinking about upping to the Saitek X-52, but I think I would really miss the immersion of force feedback. Hrmm.

Thanks for all the joystick advice. I just bought the Seitek Cyborg EVO Wireless. It should arrive by Monday.
When y'all fly, do you fly in first person view, or with the camera trailing?
you're gunna love that stick. it really is wireless. it's not a wireless base station with a 7 foot cable. it's just the joystick and 1 1/2" inch receiver that plugs into a USB port. i use the exact same stick on my laptop. on my main PC's i use a Evo Force Feedback. it's great how the sticks adjust to make flying more comfortable.

I always fly in 1st person.. after a while you will mentally construct areas that are ousite of the viewscreen and you will know where everything is relative to your position. 3rd person doesnt give you any advantage.. it just makes people lazy and not build up that spatial perception.

Nah, HOTAS joysticks for the win! (Saitek x45, x52)
HOTAS = Hands On Throttle And Stick.

I respectfully disagree. I have my joystick set up with all those buttons right where I want them plus my throttle control, twist for roll, buttons for boost, countermeasures, missiles, different buttons for Ion and Lasers, switch which componentI have targeted, etc. I never have to touch the keyboard. It is far superior to the mouse / keyboard setup. (In my opinion)

Joystick might look cool and "imersive" but nothing can be more accurate than a mousse
onebutton for nearest target, an one other for "under reticle target"
left and right arrow for rolls
and shift for match speed ( so close to arrows)
and you dont need anything else

I still PVP with a mouse.
Can't get the hang of flying with a mouse but that's probably because a) I'm still using a very old joystick (Wingman Extreme I bought about 10 years ago) and b) never tried. What's the advantage of using a mouse for flying? Is it quicker or is it just because it's what you're used to?
And flying in 3rd person? what's all that about?

Wouldn't it be neat if we actually saw our character's arms and weapons in first person mode? Then we could finally fight in first person as well.

I think it's slightly more precise, personally, which helps with accuracy and a bit with evasive maneuvers. Could just be because that's what I'm used to, though.
The major downside to a mouse is your throttle control is much more limited, and it takes both hands to move on all three axes. So if you want to change speeds or cycle through enemy players or launch a countermeasure or whatever, you lose the ability to roll for a moment.

i'm always "in the cockpit" as well.
i need to get one of these twisty rolly joysticks... i have an older joystick and i use my right hand (i'm a lefty) to roll with the arrow keys. like tomo said, giving up the ability to roll when you need to switch targets is not a good thing.

I, personally, prefer to use my Xbox controller for the JTL. It was an easy mode that cost me 5 bucks. Those controllers are USB based and you can find drivers for them online.
