Thread: So I bought a joystick...

I love this joystick and having such easy control over the throttle is great, not to mention the rudder buttons that server as "roll" in JtL. I have everything I use even semi-regularly mapped to it, including a custom bind for Ventrilo so I can actually communicate with people while doing space.

i have used saitek for 2 generations of the x-whatever series. twist rudder is nice for a console, but if you are a serious flight sim type pilot, you know a hotas with rudder buttons, or (if swg supported 2 controllers) pedals. i use my momo wheel pedals as rudder in real flight games.
x45 owns, and the new one is uber sweet.

I love the force feedback, but I have to recalibrate FAR too often.
Thinking about upping to the Saitek X-52, but I think I would really miss the immersion of force feedback. Hrmm.
I have the same thing, but cannot use the Force feedback now.
I made a new Athlon64 system, and on it, if IinstallLogitech's device drivers for the joystick, I get the drunkin bumble bee effect, making JTL unplayable.
Im stuck using the WinXP drivers that dont have the forcefeedback.
That stinks.

last time i tried a joystick, my roll buttons on the thing wouldnt work, and i couldnt find anything in the keymap to change it to, other than a roll which you have to keep pressing (and only rolls in one direction) lolMessage Edited by Ice-Cold on 07-28-2005 07:20 PM
always get a joystick with a twist ability on the stick, the API will always default to twist of the roll. Rolls are very useful when using ships with less than optimal convergence like Xwing because if you roll while firing you land more shots. Rolling on an evasive turn also makes you a harder target to hit.

Do you, or anyone else, have any problems with the throttle control being in the middle of the base instead of to the side?
It's just a complaint that I read from a few reviewers and I could see how that would be annoying...
I use an Extreme Logitech 3D Pro myself and I love it... except when it starts getting screwy on me and I have to unplug it and throw it through the window before it starts working properly again.
So, do any of you find the Cyborg's Throttle control to be poorly located?
May the force be with you.

Ya I have the Extreme 3D Pro too. I have made a habbit of plugging it in when I need it and unplugging after I'm done. It seams to do much better and doesn't act screwy most of the time.
Leaving it unplugged for awhile then plugging it in before use seams to make it re-calibrate its self better.
Just a thought,
Thanks,

Cool, TH uses the same joystick as me. ![]()
A mouse may have a slight advantage in accuracy, but the ability to manage throttle, and roll with everything right at your fingers is an advantage as well.I remapped the "optional" joystick buttons to match speed, targetting components, and switching between weapon groups. Though out of all of those the throttle bar is probably the most helpful. Lot of myfriends who use the mouse have complained about overshootingenemies ina high speed turning game. But I'd have to agree that its all up to personal preference.
Though if you're looking to start using a joystick I'd recommend anywith a roll axis (twists) and throttle control.
Happy hunting.

QFE. I use a combination of the Cyborg EVO and a Nostromo N50 SpeedPad. Works very well.

Cool. How do you have everything mapped out?
I kept the firing commands mapped to the joystick - generally specific weapon groups to most of the buttons with the exception of the ones at the top which I use for "targeting under reticle" and "centering view" (I like to keep the Hat switch on pan mode).

Thanks for all the joystick advice. I just bought the Seitek Cyborg EVO Wireless. It should arrive by Monday.
When y'all fly, do you fly in first person view, or with the camera trailing?
If I'm running a mission or fighting PvP, I use third person.
If I'm flying around being an RP geek (and not in a MP ship), I usually fly around in 1st person.

I always play first person with the cockpit frame off, except when I am flying or in the turret of a POB ship in battle, when I go third person.
I own two ace titles, Alliance and Neutral, on two different chars
BTW, TH is right about roll... I tend to fly "light and fast" ships like the Jedi fighter or the Grevious, and roll is one of my favorite manuvers to use when targeting. It feels very natural to roll via twisting the joystick.

First person in a TIE makes everything too laggy for me...especially facing into an asteroid field over a nebula.

I have the drunken bumblebee problem too. (TH if you still reading, fix this crap plz!)
To get around the problem I do the follwing in windows before launching the game..
/start, /run, dxdiag
Leave it running and launch. Fixes the issue for me. I'm boggled by it, as are the devs, but it works!
