I have a Saitek Cyborg EVO - seems like a decent stick. I just wanted one in the $30-$40 range that moved nice and smooth, with a good set of buttons. Seems like most folks with Saiteks like them.

Lots of threads on this - if you can get a search to work, go for it. I think there's even a longer thread a page or two back.

I use an oldie but a goodie....

I have a 2-3 year old MS Sidewinder pro.

10 buttons pluss the pov hat. good sturdy base, and the shaft(plastic) has not even thought of breaking.

I had annother stick, was so crappy can't remember the name, it had a steel shaft, and it snaped like a bone in a rancors mouth.

My button(s) is(are).

I have the pov, then right below is button 3 and 4(small rounds on either side just below pov hat). then below that is button 2(big). then 4 more buttons and the throttle on the base. Must be slightly different releases of the controller.

i really like my cyborg gold 3d

its survived many beatings against the top of my desk

i did have to take apart the top of it and solder a few wires back in place though

even after all the abuse it still works like a dream

but then again i am considering getting a X-45... i just hope i dont waste 80 bucks on a stick and end up going back to theone i've racked up over 70mil prestige points on

I use the same joystick -- wish the large button on the top (to the left of the POV hat) was split into two, though.

That is a nice stick, i used mine up to Xmas last year when I got myself a big Saitek beast.

it's a crapshoot recommending logitech sticks, as many of them have serious problems, however the freedom 2.4 wireless looks extremely cool, feels great in the hand and is sturdy. ymmv of course, i've heard some people have had bad problems with this stick after a couple of months, but i've been using it for a few weeks now and it's flawless.

the button layout and feel of the stick just feel right to me, as opposed to the saiteks which felt uncomfortable and even a bit flimsy.(i broke the trigger on two of them). again i have to stress though, lots of people have had problems with the freedom 2.4, and any other logitech stick is definately a no no.

The only real advice I have for joysticks is this: Buy one that has the twist-handle function. Default, twisting the handle rolls your ship, but you can change it so that twist = yaw, if you cannot get away from atmospheric joystick flight style.

Stay away from the X-series of joysticks, especially the new one (X-52, I think)...it does not work well with SWG. I have heard that the X-45 does work (if you can find one), but if I was going to have a HOTAS-type flight system, it would have to be hard-mounted...which I currently am unwilling to do.

I use the Saitek Cyborg EVO...and it's fantastic. It is very solid, and I think you will find that 9/10 people who have used it, love it. It's not terribly expensive (about $40, I think), and it's arguably the best one on the market right now. Logitech has one in a similar price range, but it doesn't seem to hold up after a lot of flight time, and it does need to be recalibrated quite often...I have never had to recalibrate my Saitek.

I've got to give it to the mouse/keyboard pilots though...how they can PvP is beyond me, but do it they can, and quitewell.

Anyway, I've rambled a bit...just make sure you like the way it feels, and that is has throttle control and twist-handle functionality. Those points are really the most important factors.

Enjoy

You defenitely didnt try X series. X-45 is doing great and does ont need to be hard mounted. And as far as I know X52 problem was resolved long time ago... no?

I have an older Saitek as well. Great stick. Played many a space sim and flight sim with it. They make good ones

I personally did not, but a friend of mine did try the X-52. Didn't work for him. And I did say that the X-45 does...

I meant that for ME, it would have to be hard mounted...I cannot fly with a joystick on the desk, much less one that has 2 seperate parts. If I could mount the stick where it should be, and mount the throttle part where it should be, I would use the X-series, hands down. But, as I said, I am unwilling to make those accomodations. I use a 3-ring binder that has so much crap in it that it's flat(my old, old EQ map/quest walkthrough binder, back in the days before allakhazam and eqmaps/eqatlas), on my lap, and the Saitek sits on that.

It's comfortable, it's (somewhat) realistic, I don't get pains in my hands/arms/shoulders, etc.

I'm glad it does not have the vibration function, though
