Thread: Why do people continue to bring up Coruscant?
Actually, Coruscant should be much EASIER to bring into the game than other planets. After all, it's all basically inside buildings, except perhaps for the launch pads, so you wouldn't have to have many textures loading unless you were on a launch pad, and even there it's possible to cut down the visibility of surrounding structures just as they do in current starports by using high walls. That leaves the interiors. Are there currently lag issues inside a building or a dungeon? No. So there'd be no real lag issueon Coruscant.
As for how Coruscant was portrayed in episode 2, well, apart from the fact that it's 30 years later, and Coruscant could have changed a lot - gotten more enclosed, etc., Episode 2 only showed one area of Coruscant. Who is to say whether that area was typical - heck, it might have been the most open area of the city for all we know. Why not make the SWG area of Coruscant be like a high tech dungeon - all interiors?

I see quite a bit oflag when I enter Anchorheads Cantina and whenwalking through Space Ports Especially Theed. Actually now that I think about it, every cantina I enter lags me.
And on the topic of dungeon lag, most don't have much lag, but most dungeons don't have a lot of stuff in them, andmost of the dungeons are spaced out.
Also have you been to the Death Watch Dungeon? I havn't, but I heard that the lag is really bad at choke points in the dungeon.
Update...
June 2002 Issue of Computer Gaming World Magazine had a preview interview about SWGwith Haden "Q-3PO" Blackman... that artical was the one where coruscant will probably never be realized... Still looking for a digital transcription of that artical...
and honestly lets talk about Coruscant..
Yes Tarus works in KOTOR because it was a Stand Alone Game that did not require internet Bandwidth, People with higher than 56k Modems and at least 512 megs of RAM for the game... with KOTOR you install the entire game and then move from sector to sector with out having to do much loading into the next sector... Thats the power of a Stand Alone Game...
Lets also look at Tarus in KOTOR its nothing more than two long hallways with loading points to diffrent sectors... and Big round rooms with smaller Spokes to create the idea of civilzation...
Ever notice how many NPC's are on Tarus... Theres only about 25 total NPCs per Zone.... Coruscant would need to have thousands if not millionsin one zonejust to give us the sense that it is populated..
Its the same issue with JK2 and Nar Shadda... Ever really looked at that level... its basicly a giant "L" shape... with a Bottom and a top with two programed speeders that zip through the level at super fast speeds just to create a busy city. Its a small World Box...
Coruscant in an internet communication/server stand point is impossable.... With the way SWG renders Cities (By loading all of the City into your system at one time, then taking it out of your system once you leave the city your visiting) Coruscant would surely crash the desk top or lock up your computer...
The Technology is the problem with coruscant, not the vision.... Until we see 4ghz Chips with at least 6 Gigs of ram Standard and at the affordable level for the average person, Coruscant is just but a whisper on a breath...
As soon as I Can find a Transcript of that interview I will post it... But hey at least I have managed to track down a source... Maybe some one might have that issue lying around their homes... who knows... lol

The Devs have said that Coruscant is impossible to do, due to lag / system limits.
Complete BS. How come City of Heroes and Matrix Online can createand take place in huge cities? If they can, so can SWG. It's just a matter of being willing to dedicated resources. Now if SWG management came out and said "Yeah, it's technically possible but does not make sense financially because of the amount of resources required to maintain it" than I would understand.
As far as stuff to do... I personally never hunt wildlife anyway except for grinding. Wildlife is boring. I'm pretty sure Devs would be able to think of some other content for Coruscant. GCW. Criminals. Police. NPC Jedis. NPC Smugglers. TONS of stuff to do.
It's not BS. Why don't you go play Starwars Ep One and Two and take a good look at the city. Especially in Episode Two. Even if they made Coruscant half as populated as it looked in the movies I still think this game couldn't handleit.
Notice I underlined "this game" because this game isn't the same as City of Heros. The devs would have to seriously recode the way cities are loaded if they ever wanted to get anything close to city of heros.ComparingCity of Heros and Star Wars Galaxies, although both MMORPGs, is like comparing apples to oranges. On the surface the games may share some aspects, but what you don't see is the game code which makes it all possible.

The developer is making a common mistake here. He's thinking that Coruscant MUST be modelled in the same way as other planets. He clearly has not even considered the idea of keeping all player activities on Coruscant indoors. A classic example of thinking 'inside the box' - or in this case more accurately 'thinking ONLY outside the box'.
You cannot possibly believe that this is a good representation of Coruscant. I have read countless times in countless interviews that, while Coruscant is something that the developers would very much like to put into the game, they would like to do it right, which would require power that is not currently available. Your idea of Coruscant is half-assed at best; not anywhere near the representation of Coruscant that the developers would like to implement.
He is not being an unrealistic pessimist; he is being a realistic pessimist. One who clearly can remember the reasons that the devs will not be putting Coruscant into Star Wars Galaxies any time in the near future.
Thanks for sticking up for me when Im not around to respond LuriAsmyr.
Yeah I totally have to disagree with Beery. What Beery wants would indeed end up being a half-assed version of Coruscant.
Let me list all the things that would have to go into Coruscant for it to even look simmilar to what was seen in the movies. Then I will compare it to all existing cities in the game.
Coruscant would need:
- Buildings at least twice the size / Hightof those found in any of the current NPC cities.
- Multiple levels or layersof the city.
- Hundreds of Thousandsof NPCs crowding the streets. (Thousands is probably even a little low)
- Thousands of speedersflying overhead and atdifferentlevelsmimicing the traffic on earth.
- Some buildings would have to actually be accessable to players.
Now let us compare that to what is currently in the game:
- We have some tall buildings in SWG right now, but nothing that would fit with Coruscant. Buildings for Coruscant would need to be at least twice the size of the ones seen in Coronet.
- Currently none of the cities have multiple layers. Also, No building that I can think of has more than 2 floors.
- None of the existing cities have anywere near the amount of NPCs that would be needed for Coruscant.
- Currently we can see some vehicles flying over head on all planets, but Coruscant would need much more traffic.
- Currently we are luck if we can enter 40% of the structures in NPC cities. Coruscant if done in any way similar to our current cities would have even more empty structures to take up space.
Now I based this on the current cities, because that's all we have to work with. In the future if the Devs make Bespin (Cloud City) and added some new never before seen features such as mulitple city levels and large lag free city structures Then I might have to consider Coruscant a possibility. Unfortunatly the devs have done nothing to show me that Coruscant is currentlypossible.
correct me if I am confused but isn't there gaps between coruscant skyscrapers? its not like walking down new york city, its like walking on top of new york city skyscrapers that are connected my platforms....right? they don't go to the bottom. so what would be hard about it, its spaced out buildings and you can load sectors at a time instead of the whole planet if need be. since people do no travel to the real planet, there is no need to create a 'planet' down therre, so its one less thing the devs have to worry about.
sorry if this don't make sense, I'm getting tired and will correct my errors if needbe
