We seriously need some rethought on how to spread people out in theNPC cities. I did hear somewhere a while back that there was a possiblilty of making buildings with floors and apartments, but that was probably a flash in the pan dev response. But then we don't even have reason to go into an NPC city at all do we??

It was more than a flash in the pan. It was one of the recent interview in which they stated that they are currently discussion ways to make NPC cities a more dynamic part of the game. Renting apartments was thrown out as a possiblity at that time. It makes perfect sense too. They mentioned at that time also their desire to increase and improve the content on existing planets before adding more.

Which is of course a great idea that makes a lot of sense. No arguments there.

I'm only trying to lay to rest this myth that the devs have already abandoned the idea of eventually doing coruscant. In recent interviews they have said that they have every intention of eventually doing it.

Ok guys, do you guys remeber the earley anchorhead. (I dont know if it was populated in your server before player cities but it sure as hell was in mine.) Well think of that but 10 times worse in lag. Why would the devs create a planet that without 2 gigs of RAM you would lag out. Also, if they make the planet one big city it would get repetetive and boring. Think about swooping through all the buildings.

But I guess it could be cool if it was not laggy. You cna go into each individual building and you can take shuttleports to other places in the city. You can see the council building and the jedi academy. It would be pretty cool. TO bad it will never happen

Malitevv,
Desire to do something, then actually doing it and doing it properly are too different animals though huh. There was desire to make Jedi rare, desire to have a Hutt/crime faction, desire to require protocol droids.... desire to make this game immersive.Desire can be wished for, reality is what comes out, and the reality is dynamic content for cities doesn't mean anything other then a stop over for players. Or an extra badge to grind. An extra one-off thing to do. Humans are a'been there done that' creature. And we are naturally content hungry, experience seeking gluttons.

I remember the interview where they said they 'desired' to make cities feel more lived in and have some better content. The devs say alot of things, and they didn't give any examples, they just said content and they desire to do something better with NPC cities. They are only human, and have the same wishful thinking that we do. They're the ones that have to make it happen, and have lunch, see the spouse and kids at least once a week and watch us whine about stuff on forums.

Coruscant would be a 2 years off type thing. Or more like a 5 years off (SWG2) thing. Love to see it, would love to know what they would do with it. But can live without it if it means we get more bang for our buck on the 10 planets we already have. I want Atmospheric flight before Coruscant...because errm Coruscant would need that wouldn't it.

Update...

June 2002 Issue of Computer Gaming World Magazine had a preview interview about SWGwith Haden "Q-3PO" Blackman... that artical was the one where coruscant will probably never be realized... Still looking for a digital transcription of that artical...

and honestly lets talk about Coruscant..

Yes Tarus works in KOTOR because it was a Stand Alone Game that did not require internet Bandwidth, People with higher than 56k Modems and at least 512 megs of RAM for the game... with KOTOR you install the entire game and then move from sector to sector with out having to do much loading into the next sector... Thats the power of a Stand Alone Game...

Lets also look at Tarus in KOTOR its nothing more than two long hallways with loading points to diffrent sectors... and Big round rooms with smaller Spokes to create the idea of civilzation...

Ever notice how many NPC's are on Tarus... Theres only about 25 total NPCs per Zone.... Coruscant would need to have thousands if not millionsin one zonejust to give us the sense that it is populated..

Its the same issue with JK2 and Nar Shadda... Ever really looked at that level... its basicly a giant "L" shape... with a Bottom and a top with two programed speeders that zip through the level at super fast speeds just to create a busy city. Its a small World Box...

Coruscant in an internet communication/server stand point is impossable.... With the way SWG renders Cities (By loading all of the City into your system at one time, then taking it out of your system once you leave the city your visiting) Coruscant would surely crash the desk top or lock up your computer...

The Technology is the problem with coruscant, not the vision.... Until we see 4ghz Chips with at least 6 Gigs of ram Standard and at the affordable level for the average person, Coruscant is just but a whisper on a breath...

As soon as I Can find a Transcript of that interview I will post it... But hey at least I have managed to track down a source... Maybe some one might have that issue lying around their homes... who knows... lol

Ugh, why do people overlook the fact that Coruscant is like Soviet-era East Berlin? If you are an alien on the planet, you are segregated to alien zones (seperate but equal?). If you are a rebel on the planet, you are dead. So no rebels, very little crime, nothing for imps to do, so what is the point? Would this be worth all the time and effort it would take to create an all-city planet? NO!

Don't get me wrong, I do want an all-city planet, but that planet should be Nar Shadda where everyone can have fun!

No to Corruscant!

I don't want to see rebels stroll through like theres no civil war going on.

Like they baldly walk around in EVERY city now.

Until Rebel means being a rebel, we should not have any "major" Imperial hubs created. They will only become "gankzones" and "Rebel tourist zones"..with rebels comming in and yelling "long live the rebellion...LoLOLOL!"

Coruscant would certainly be challenging, if not impossible. The whole planet's a global city...imagine all those polys being pushed around...and my comp struggles in Theed. They'd have to ramp up the sys requirements.

I always thought it would be nive to have faction specific planets; allow Rebs, Imperials, and Neutrals to enjoy some exclusive content. You could have Hoth for the Rebs, Bespin (Cloud City)for the Neutrals, and...errr, Coruscant for the Imperials. Ahem.

Oh well...

Actually, that is false. Read the three dev interviews that are currently linked at the top of the SWG page. In one of them the developer is asked if we will ever have coruscant and the answer he gives is that it is currently on their top 10 list of things they would like to do.

I don't know where this notion that the devsbelieve it is impossible came from. It is clearly not true based upon the most recent developer interviews.

Read them yourself.

Complete BS. How come City of Heroes and Matrix Online can createand take place in huge cities? If they can, so can SWG. It's just a matter of being willing to dedicated resources. Now if SWG management came out and said "Yeah, it's technically possible but does not make sense financially because of the amount of resources required to maintain it" than I would understand.

As far as stuff to do... I personally never hunt wildlife anyway except for grinding. Wildlife is boring. I'm pretty sure Devs would be able to think of some other content for Coruscant. GCW. Criminals. Police. NPC Jedis. NPC Smugglers. TONS of stuff to do.

Well there is a difference between "A huge city" and Coruscant. If coruscant is to be done, everyone will want it done right. This means at least 20 levels of city scape all stacked on top of each other, not to mention 100's of sky scrapers. They will want atmospheric driving lanes for their upgraded speeders. They will want lots of indepth quests and such. It goes on and on. It would have to be its own expansion.
