The piloting professions (Imperial and Rebellion alike) cost no skill points throughout the entire tree?

Correct Pilot profs have no skill point cost, however Shipwright does.

Thankfully true, it means anyone can pick up a copy of JTL and become a master pilot of any faction without having to drop their hard earned ground skills.

Toadd one more point.
All pilot training is obtained from your friendly npc trainer. Other players cannot train you in pilot skills.

how much do you have to kill in order for the trainer to award you a box on your tier?

Its mission based. You have all these fun missions and you gain skills that way
