Thread: JTL Will it really help this game?
Guess what? I'm in beta and I say for the most part it sucks. Sure the novelty of flying in space and blasting other ships was fun, but that wore off after a few weeks. When I actually started looking past the initial short lived fun factor and the pretty space graphics, and actually started looking at the game itself and it's integration with the ground game, I can honestly say it sucks. But that's just my opinion.

From what I've seen/read (and no, I'm not in beta or anything) Jump to Lightspeed is going to let players take starfighters and a few other types of ships into space and have faction battles there, right? And there are space-based missions I assume.
Is that it? Nothing more?
Since there is no space mining or real exploration (or reason to do so), are starships nothing more than a new way for people to PvP? And perhaps a cheaper/quicker way to fly planet-to-planet?
As nice as all the movies and screenshots have been, I think this expansion is going to be an overhyped graphics-heavy shooter mini-game add-on to SWG. That is extremely lame. :/
I'm a neutral crafter...what reason do I have to go into space? Pretty graphics are great for advertising, but if the gameplay and depth aren't there, JTL is going to be very lame. It MAY BE groundwork for some spectacular things in the future, but isn't that exactly what the whole game is right now?
Thoughts? Opinions? Flames? Secret beta info?

Never been a game where you can fight someone over the internet in starships? How about Earth and Beyond, Xwing v. Tie orFreelancer? Its not even the first SW game with PvP via the Internet. And yeah....there needs to be something more than just blowing stuff up to keep most people long term. If the ground game taught the devs anything it should at least be that just destroying things in a repetitive fashion is not enough.

Very well put, my sentiments exactly.

Yes an MMORPG that is lacking the mechanics and content neccesary for the RPG part. And I have been playing the beta and with the exception of the missions to go up through the pilot skill trees, this is pretty much a spaced based FPS, nothing much outside of PvE and PvP. Once again that's just my opinion though.

This is a MMORPG not a flight sim/first person shooter. This is the first MMORPG combine ground and space in real time grahics.

And you are probably so used to walking in Jedi gank sqauds that you will not not be used to fighting on your own merits in space. I mean since we are just randomly assuming things.

I love the rebel pilot quests. And also it is so much fun trickin' out your ships. And this will be good for the game because THE jedi grind is soooo amazingly boreing. At least you do not have autoaim and defensive stackers in space.
Your probally so used to autoaim that you have no skill.

I've played tons of action space games. Shooting at ships could get very old after...say...a week?
Ever heard of Fun? The other point is to become the best pilot ever...unlike the ground game where the only thing that matters in PvP is how good of a template you have, in space there will be people "famous" in the game because they are really good with a joystick. It will actually involve skill, rather than time. I'm sure the piloting skill tree wil make a little difference but not too much. I really am looking forward to good ol' PvP that relies on skills, rather than templates.
BTW I'm sure whoever has a better ship will make a difference too...however the people who will become "famous" in jtls are the people who beat a super X-wing with there starter ship/

That's one interpretation. Here is another.... I started to play SWG because I wanted to be a part of the SWG galaxy, that isn't the case. I am a big RPer and have tried to RP in this game but it just doesn't go that well. This game was meant to be an RPG game but it didn't turn out that way. And what's the difference between getting the best template in ground game and becoming the best pilot in the space game? IMHO nothing, as those trying to get the best template are doing so to be the best fighter in the ground game and those in space are trying to be the best fighter in space. If all you need to do to have fun is fly and shoot, fly and shoot, then you'll enjoy JTL, and that'sas far as the content goes in the ground game, run and shoot, run and shoot. But for those of us that actually wanted to play the game, to be a part of the SWG universe JTL, like the ground game, is missing alot to be desired (actual content wise).
You know I remeber the first annoucements about this game that I read. I was so excited, they said stuff like, live the life of Han Solo, be a crime lord like Jabba, or a Jedi like Luke. Well that still remains to be seen in my eyes. Sure I am the same profession as Han, but I am not actually living the life of one such as Han. This game so far lacks the mechanics and content for this, and that goes for JTL as well.
BTW, you'll be in for a rude awakening. I have news for you a big part of the PvP in space will be based on how good a ship you have. Trust me, I seriously doubt you will find anyone, no matter what pilot level they are, that will be able to take down a top of the line attack ship with a starter ship. One big reason is because the person flying that top of the line ship can only be a master pilot or damn close. So you are taking two pilots matched in skill, yet entirely unmatched in hardware. That's not a hard equation to figure out. I could give you other reasons but I'm not sure how much detail I am allowed to go into.. NDA and all.

From wha you say, there is only one way to play SWG, there sin't, SWG is a MMORPG, and if your really want to play YOUR,notTHE, butYOUR version of the game, so be it, but don't say that some is playign a GAME wrong, people come to play for different reasons, soem to play as a citizen in teh star wars galaxy.....and some came just to play.
SWG can't make an RPG game because RPG, true RPG, is how you make it. It is the players job to make roleplaying, and SWG's to giv ethe rescurces. If you don't think SWG is well made, then you don't realize how hard it is to make a game, especially Star Wars, with LucasArts breathing down your neck to keep you in check..... this is a game, and when people insult it liek this, a game that SOE worked for the past year to make, and bash it before it comes out........ give the game a chance before you jedge on framweork and Beta testing.......
/rant off
In my opinion, JTL can eitehr save this game, or doom it. I believe that a bunch of computer technichians and star wars lovers can no doubt make a good game, so i believe this game will do the former......save it
Message Edited by Jay-Bird on 10-18-2004 04:41 AM
Ok, first off I did not say there was only one way to play SWG or anyone that was playing it a certain way is wrong. Quote me a line from my statement above that states this, Thank you, didn't think so. And you just said this is an MMORPG, what do you think the RPG portion of that stands for? And as far as the RPG part, yes it is, in part, the players job to make it RPG, BUT WHEN THE GAME LACKS THE MECHANICS AND CONTENT TO DO SO THEN PLAY ALL YOU WANT, IT AIN"T HAPPENING! So by your statement I can play, oh let's say, Warhammer: DoW and play it as an RPG? Wrong because it lacks the game mechanics and content to do so. This game was touted from announcement of it's development to be an MMORPG (remember the RPG part in that acronym), yet has fallen short on that part (IHMO).
You telling me not to bash the game is no different than me telling you how to play the game. I have every right to complain or "bash" the game if I want to. When this game goes live it will affect portions of the ground game wether or not I buy the expansion. That in itself gives me the right to judge the game as I pay for the ground game. BTW, when a game goes to Beta, the core game content and mechanics are pretty much done. Beta is the last step before deployment and is only used to address any bugs that might result in an unacceptable game hinderance and to polish and make last minute cosmetic changes. So for the most part what you see is what you get, So yes I can make a statement that IHMO it sucks because it is for all intents and purposes done. Also if you happen to read my earlier statements you will understand why I say this, it has nothing to do with the game itself rather that it is just basically a space shooter, and by your own admission the ground game needs saving which a space shooter isn't going to do because the ground game problems go beyond this. BTW I am a Star Wars lover, it is because I am that I make these statements. I just don't accept anything put out with Star Wars stamped on it as good, and as a true Star Wars fan I will complain or "bash" anything that Ithinkdoes not measure up.
Maybe if you can post a reply that doesn't contradict itself and smack of hipocrisy then I will take you more serious. Until then...
