If your ship got damaged in battle, then yes, you need to either repair your reactor and engine in order to fly, or buy a new reactor and engine.
One thing I learned from my first time getting blown up in space is to eject when it says to eject! It takes you back to the space station and you can pay a small amount to repair all damage.
If you ever land without repairing you have to repair each compnent individually! It's cruddy and a pain, since each type of component needs a different type of repair kit!
When you use the [ and ] keys to cycle through the ships subsystems, underneath the armor, shield, and chassis percentages, the engine status should appear like this, Engine 100% orsomething like that. When you disable it, it wont say 0%, it will simply not be able to be targeted again, just press the [ or ] key until you get to engine, (theres only engine and reactor for a ship like this i believe) get behind it and shoot it until the shields and armor are gone, then shoot it carfully untill the red engine thing dissappears, it should stop and you should be fine, maybe disable the reactor as well and then try to dock, dont really know if that would affect it at all though.
Targeting subsystems can be very helpful, when i was doing 30 ties mission, (im rebel pilot) i disabled their engines and then finished them off once they were stopped. Also, you can target turrets on gunships, lambada shuttles, or tie agressors, it really takes away the advantae that they normally have. Subsystems will eventually be important when you have to kill the corvette (if freelance have to do that mission), you need to target shields, engines, the bridge and maybe others in order to kill it.
Anyways, i'll shut up now becasue im probably starting to bore you
hope that helps.
However, sometimes just taking out the engines will not disable the ship, as has happened to me on my Tier4 Inquisition missions.
On some ships to be considered "disabled" you need to take out the Reactor aswell.
Good Luck.

Like others said use "[" & "]" to target components.

/agree this has caught me by surprise a few times also you need to be careful once you have knocked out an engine if your next hit is to hard you can blow up the ship if you have alot of fire power.
Thanks for all the help, I'll give it a try tomorrow, I went grinding instead
filled up 1 box, now another, but when I go back to the smuggling woman she won't let me train. I take it you HAVE to do some of the quests before she'll let you train again right?
Was shooting down tier 4 ships and getting just over 3k each, nice.
I didn't know how to target subsystems, so it is probably that. Thanks.
