And I jsut upgraded and still looking to upgrade my board itself, not for JTL but for EQ2. I have no doubt that JTL isn't going to require that much more than SWG. But yeh, if your computer is more than 18 months old, it's time for an upgrade anyway.

I really need to get some more RAM (only have 256, swg runs like crap when i'm near a city, or people ), but i'm not sure if i CAN upgrade a Dell computer... I've opened my PC up, and tried putting in some RAM from my old PC (overclocked it and it fried itself :'() so I tried putting in my old RAM and it wouldn't boot properly, do I need Dell specific RAM?

nice info on the hard drives. Ill keep that in mind. Here some info on power supplies, which I was not aware of and almost bought an awful case. THank the lord...or the government, for creating the internet.

The amperage rating is the most important factor when choosing a power supply. Most modern Intel and AMD systems should have the +12V rail putting out 16a or more. If you look at the label on your power supply, you will see a chart showing the +12V, +5V, and +3.3V rails and how many amps each rail puts out. Many of the newer 6800 and X800 video cards run off of the +5V rail, and will need many amps to back it up. 30a on the +5V rail should be the minimum if you want to run the latest hardware, 40a preferably. The +3.3V rail supplies power to components such as your memory. +3.3V rail should be atleast 25a, 35a preferred though. Running your memory at 3.1V will eat up alot of juice, but think how much more you're using up when you add more modules. Most overclockers usually run atleast a 400W power supply. Once you start adding voltage to various components, its taking more juice to get it to run properly

I bought a case with a 450 w power supply which exceeds the minimum amp output as listed above.

Is this older ram? Is it DDR or or sd ram? What speed is it? Your MB may not support the type of ram your installing.

here is a great link for you.

Ohdewd, you got a Dell....

I'll say what I tell everyone who comes to me asking about those packaged computers...

NEVER EVER BUY A PACKAGED COMPUTER DEAL! NOT DELL, NOT GATEWAY, NOT PACKARD BELL, NOT ANYTHING! Get someone who knows about computers to build you one for 1/3 the cost and 3x the performance. What you get for your $2500 to Dell I can make for about $500. Total rip-off. I could go into details, but I'm sure those who know know what I mean, and those who don't don't feel like reading about 5 paragraphs as to why you shouldn't buy from Dell.

I cant believe this thread has gone this far with no one mentioning this.....In all probability JtL will actually require LESS of your computers resources to run well (connection speed excluded). Why? Terrain Generation!! Being a space based game your computer will not have to generate and render any ground, or buildings for that matter. Terrain generation is a HUGE resource hog and with this being a non factor (hah Bloodfin board reference!!) in JtL I wont be surprised if JtL is actually quite easy to run.

I have to build me a new one. I have a gateway with a celeron 2.2 in it now. It runs ok for me eversince I installed 1 gig of ram. For JTL I am not even going to attemp to try it on my current pc. I have found a site which some of you may know of, some may not. I am buying my parts in pieces over the next two or three months, my first purchase were these parts:

CASE POWMAX| MID ATX C501-1 RETAIL
FDD 1.44MB NEC|FD1231H-302 OEM BLK

SOUND BLASTER|AUDIGY ES (SB0162) %

MB CHTECH S865PE INTEL 865PE+ICH5 R

CDRW/DVD COMBO ROSEWILL C523216 RT

these 5 products at my local Frys electronicswould have cost well over 300 dollars! I paid $192 for these five parts. I bought a good case with a clear side and blue lights, 3.5 drive, good sound card, and great motherboard, and got a really good deal on a dvd/cdrw combo drive.

If your going to look into building your own gaming machine I suggest really checking out the specs on each item and not buyng it based on what you "think" soundds good. For example this motherboard has a 400/533/800 mhz front side bus . Right now there are 3 main chipsets by intel for an fsb UP TO 800MHZ. This means you could put any socket 478 intel pentium 4/celeron processor in there as long as it has a 400mhz/533mhz/800mhz front side bus. There are also other chipsets that can support fsb speeds of up to 533mhz, but the boards that can go up to the 800mhz offer the most upgradeability.

also keep an eye on the supported chipsets

Taken from pc mechanic forum:

These are the chipsets that intel currently make for the pentium 4/celeron:

865p- This chipset supports fsb speeds of up to 533mhz, and can support dual channel ram. The maximum speed memory it can accept is 333mhz/pc 2700. Not as upgradeable as the 865pe/g/875p.

865pe- Just like intels best chipset, the 875p, except PAT is disabled. (Description of PAT: http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/pat.htm ) Supports fsb speeds of up to 800mhz, and can support the new prescott core processors when they arrive. Also supports dual channel ram. The maximum speed memory this can support is 400mhz. Recommended for near 875p performance.

865g- Good choice for budget computers because of the integrated graphics. The same as the 865pe, except this has the integrated graphics. Also the graphics are upgradeable by the agp8x port, so if you do buy a motherboard based on this chipset the graphics may still be upgraded by disabling the graphics in the bios when you get a graphics card.

875p- Intels best chipset to date. Same features as the 865pe except PAT is enabled

hope this helps some what. The website addres for the store is www.newegg.com

have fun and may the firce be with you.

Yes you can upgrade it, I have a dell and a custom built one. On the dell I have added more memory, a new vid card, another hard drive and a dvd writable drive. I could do more with it but I am currently building a new custom job that I will be using asa gaming rig.

1.) I have 2 systems currently going on SWG.

a.) Dell Dimension 4300
P4-1.6 400Mhz
512K SdRam 133Mhz
256 GeForce FX 5500 (4xAGP)
250W Power Supply

b.) E-Machines T2692 (Upgraded)
Intel Celeron-2.6 400Mhz
768K DDR 333Mhz pc2700
128 GeForce MX4000 (PCI)
350W Power Supply

As for the DELL machine......I'm pretty pissed because it can only handle 512K RAM max. I'm hoping to upgrade the board and chip soon, I'm waiting to see how this new PCI-Express craze unfolds. The best thing going for it is the 256 video card. It still drags A$$ anywhere near a city on a busy night, but it was much worse when I only had my Radeon 64MB 7500 running the game. I get a lot of stuttering as well, even in open areas. I will be upgrading this system in the next few weeks.

As for the E-machines......Pissed again because it did not come with an AGP slot.....(again, more terror from the "package deal pc").....it came with 256K DDR RAM. I upgraded to a PCI video card..128K GeForce, bought a 512K stick of kingston RAM (768 Total). Even though most people hate Celeron Processor, this system runs a hell of a lot better then my P4, granted it's got 256K more RAM. I also upgraded the Case / Power Supply for the e-machine that had a 350W PS, instead of the 200W that was on the OEM emachine box. I see some people post that they are running Celeron chips with only 256K RAM and they get a little drag....**when I tried this, it took me about 5 damn minutes to get off of my bike and into the Karen SP to get a ticket....RIDICULOUS** So I figured it was either the fact that there was a PCI card running the game, or that I needed more RAM....I went with the RAM idea first, and thank goodness it seems to have done the trick. I went thru the Coronet SP about 10 times to test out the speed, being as this is the most populated area on the server (Intrepid) and it worked great. I got down to 7fps, but it never lagged on me...I was very impressed. I think going to 1GB of RAM will really complete this system, but I am still contemplating ditching the chip and board for some AMD stuff.....we'll see.

Good luck to everyone and their upgrades, and thanks for all the input in the previous threads....I'll be checking this thread to see if I can find more info in helping me to upgrade the Dell machine; however, I may just scrap everything but the Video Card.

If you buy Alienware, Dell, or an eMachine, you must have money to burn.

I didn't know much about computers until I bought two books on how to build a gaming PC. I spent $25 on the books, and learned how to build my own Gaming PC for a FRACTION of what Alienware, Dell, or eMachines charge.

Plus you gain valuable knowlege on how how your computer works. That way, when something goes wrong, you don't sit on the phone with somone in another country trying to figure out what to do, you fix it yourself.

LOL......Pricewatch is the best web site of all time.....

And not all of us have $$$ to burn...I actually got my Dell for free from my company, and the emachine PC we got pretty cheap at BestBuy for about $215 after rebates.

I'm not building a new computer but I just picked up a 3200+ with 400 fsb for only $130, of course I had to get a Thermalright SLK 900a heatsink to go with it. There was nothing wrong with my 2500+ but Ihave been looking for an excuse to upgrade. I might replace my 9700pro with a 9800pro before release, depends on how it preforms in beta.

If your looking for a good resource for Hardware go to

http://www.tomshardware.com/

the site has been a great resource when I go for computer parts. It proved to be a great learning experience when I went to build my system.

After I found what I wanted my next stop was pricewatch.
