Thread: A-Wings... kinda suck.

First of all: I love to fly a x-wing - its the fighter with the greatest StarWars-feeling for me.

But as I got the A-wing certification I only bought it because I was curious about this tiny little thing.

After the first few tier 4 missions I am starting to love it.

I will always stay on my x-wing on the hard missions because all enemies are charging me and I need my shields to survive.

But anything else I do with this fine little piece hardware

*hugs her a-wing*

Actually, in my personal experience with the two, especially after the AI change, you are much better off in your A-Wing. The first time I went to solo my Tier 4 first mission, I took my X-Wing, tricked out and ready to roll. I couldn't keep up, and the Blacksun's on that mission ripped me a new one. I made it the full five minutes, but I was so damaged I got destroyed trying to meet up with the Nym's reinforcements. The second time out, I took the A-Wing. The mission took forever, but I did not have one damaged system when I completed it. That's right, 12 Tier 4 Black Sun's, and they couldn't cut through my shields. The footprint on this little thing is ridiculous, even the AI has trouble with it. Load the biggest, meanest blaster you can fit on it, cut corners on the reactor, and the capacitor, use the reward engine, and put a decent shield on it, and your survivability should increase significantly from that of the X-Wing.

I had the same initial reaction.

What the A Wing does bring is a 922 speed (with the 92.2 engine) and the ability to turn on a dime at almost that full speed.

I can keep up with any ship and they can never get behind me.

You would be surprised at the equipment that you can fit in it if you know how.

ie. I had a 12500 reactor w/ 11000 mass in my a wing day one, not realising I had a 11500 reactor with 1350 mass in my backpack!

I use the "pirahna" mentality with my A Wing, I could only fit 1100-1800 weapons but with my capacitor I almost never run out of juice, so I just stay on their arses and wear 'em down.

I have crap sheilds and armor but I never get tailed.

A Wing is NOT good for solo missions because all eyes are on you.

But the A Wing rules when you are assisting friends.

I solo'd almost all of Tier 4 with my A-Wing. It's fine for solo missions...especially when you squeeze in a Level 8 gun.

RE, RE, RE!! That will save you a bunch of mass!! If you RE'd your parts and didn't get what you wanted, RE some more! I have a friend that has all hard points loaded, a 97 speed engine, and an imperial chip in his droid. His cruise speed is 1200, 1500 with boost, and optimum turning speed is 1002.

He's untouchable! The Awing can be pretty awesome if you do it right.

just a tip to make your A-wing a little better. Well the way i do it.

I dropped a speed 75 engine in it, only like 4k mass.

Crafted shield that is about 1500/1500 transfer 3/4 front for like 2500/850 Mass on shield is like 13k

Light armor maybe 3-4k mass at the most on the front and back.

Very light boosters mine are 500 mass

Lightweight droid controller 490 mass

Tier 1 reactor only about 1500 mass

Tier 8 gun hehehe 3200 damage and 33k mass

Level 2 Capacitor 920 energy 33 recharge i think its 4k mass or less.

granted its not super super fast. but if you skimp on shields to gain speed thats your preference. But if you want to deal out damage go light and lean. Invest in a good shield and go light on armor. The A-Wing is a no nonsense straight up scrapper. Its a fast and lethal fighter even at reduced speeds its agility is still present. Just tinker with it, you will find room and you dont need all the best stuff in it to do very well.

P.S. dont use the A-wing to grind with in my opinion. you want something good for that deck out your X-wing or if you like heavy weight i like the Long Probe.

Same here:

L8 gun!

No, NO armor

1900/1900L four shield loot drop

82.2L 2 engine loot drop

tinyL 1 booster

ok L1 reactor low mass (remember on this puppy 8K reactors are perfect)

Decent L1 loot drop capacitor 893/28 recharge

never slow down, and in a big furball dont tail gate you can loop all over those suckas! So taill shoot a few, roll around and repeat. Staying targetable is your only weakness, so keep juking!

I knew the mass would be an issue since this is supposed to be the highly maneuverable speed-demon of the Alliance Fleet. Anyway, I drop in the same engine I have been using on my X-Wing, the best I have seen with a max speed of 92. I put on a nice weapon, lighter shields and armor than I am used to and I take off. As soon as I hit space I throttle all the way up and hit my booster...
I am travelling at practically the same damn speed as my X-Wing. What the hell gives? A tiny increase in speed, but a huge reduction in fire power and shields. What is the point of this thing? Is this a bug that is goingto be fixed?
Needless to say, I dropped my components back into my X-Wing and have been piloting that since. The X-Wing is the master of space for tier 3 and 4... which sucks since I was fully expecting the A-Wing to have some good qualities and be a respectable upgrade from the X-Wing and something to help out in the 10 million xp need to hit Ace.
Well, any useful comments will be appreciated. Let me know if I am alone in this experience with the A-Wing.
Thanks.

Uh.... don't you think that if you use the same engine in your x wing then you will get the same results in your a wing? The engines aren't magically gonna get faster cause you put the same one in another chassi.

Incorrect.

A particular chassis model will have an engine speed modifier. A-Wings have a modifer of 10. So a 92.2 speed engine will give you 922 speed. X-Wings (with their wings open) have a modifier of 9 and would give you about 830 speed with the same engine.

Verified. The same engine it two different chassis will have different speeds.

I have a 103.3 speed engine. In my YT, my cruise speed is 820. With the same engine in my Firespray, the cruise speed is 950, 1200 with the imp overload3 chip, yielding me 1495 with boost. The very same setup in the YT is much less.

Even versus NPC's the smaller footprint makes a significant difference. I have heard reports of the 100% accurate Tie Advance rear turrets having their accuracy dropped to 60% or so. The cumulative effects of this only get better the more targets you have in a sortie.
