Thread: Just wasted 2 plus hours on JTL. Thanks Crackhead devs!

I just attempted to do a tier 4 Storm Squadron Mission and after completed 3/4 of it I got killed. Now I have to start this boring crappy mission all over again. Its amazing how stipuid this game design is. Do the retards think people will enjoy repeating some long boring mission over and over? Then those idiots wonder why this game is not doing the numbers a certain well known game is. Why is this not fixed yet? These missions should be broken up and not some long boring 3 hour snore fest.
This is the first time I've played JTL in months and after this I probably will never attempt these missions unless they change them.
Get some friends, will make JTL much easier...

I got to admit long escort missions drive me batty too. No matter how good you are, how well you can fly, NOTHING you do will make it go any faster. I need a 32 oz'er every time i attempt one these days.
Not an excuse to log on the forums and be a crybaby. If you fail something, try it again with a different approach and you will eventually succeed.
Personally I feel the quest based pilot professions are a cut above the grind based ground game with the glareing exception of the stupidly long escort missions we have. Break them up at least. I don't care if I have to run 3-6 missions to qualify for a box as long as those missions are 10-20 min a pop instead of 120 min or more. Really. Some of us have obligations outside the game. Asking any player to stay at the keyboard for two hours flat to finish a mission is just a bad idea.
I've aced three squads and I'm into my fourth tier on at least three others so I've done my fare share of tier 3 missions. This isn't some lame right of passage thing. It's a waste of time. Of all things they took out shuttle waits because the players claimed it was a wast of time. That's nothing compaired to flying for 90 min only to have to fail a mission because something came up you couldn't ingnore.

I'm doing Storm Squadron atm - it's a lot easier if you bring an ace along with you! =) There are some nice people out there in Space who may agree to help you out.
But I have to take issue with people saying you had to start at the beginning in Mario and Mega Man.
Wow. Has game design not progressed at all since then?
We put up with that at the time as we didn't know any better! Would you play through Final Fantasy or Zelda games if you couldn't save your progress and had to start at the beginning each time you switched off or failed a mission?
In Halo, you had huge levels that autosaved at certain points so you didn't have to start the whole damn level again.
Newer games like GTA: San Andreas annoyed the hell out of me. To the point that I stopped playing the missions and just had fun driving around . A simple mistake in a mission at exactly the wrong moment would mean you'd have to start again. And that's no fun if the start point is miles away from the actual start of the mission and you have to drive back there and then drive back to where the mission takes place just to redo it. Would a 'restart mission' option really hurt?
Then there are PC FPS games like Doom 3 and Half Life 2. They allow you to save progress anywhere with a quick save. People brought up on these types of games would balk at the idea of restarting a whole level because they died. Especially if they were near the end of a level!
I think the original poster was grumpy because of the lack of thought put into the game design.
I mean, I got ROTW the other day and tried to do the JSF mission (escorting the ATST, defending the base against rebels etc etc). Now it's not a hard mission by any stretch of the imagination but it is bugged. It took me three days (!) because there isn't a simple 'reset mission' option for when things go wrong and rebels spawn inside scenery. I basically had to wait for the mission to reset itself. Three times!
I was happy to see though, that I didn't have to do the ATST bit again each time. Which is a step in the right direction in my opinion ![]()
So what's the harm, I ask, if every time you reach a waypoint with your escort intact the mission saves your progress and you're given the option to start at that point rather than at the beginning?
Games are supposed to be entertaining. They're supposed to be fun. And my idea of 'fun' isn't re-doing the same long dull missions that take forever to get through. It's a cheap tactic.
Storm squadron is difficult. Very difficult. But that difficulty should be in how smart the enemy is. Or that they have strength in numbers. It should be a test of your skill, not a test of your perseverence!
Having said that, it can be fun flying with someone else to complete the mission. You make the experience what it is =)
I'd offer to help, but I'm not on your server mate. Join a guild, talk to people round the terminals in a spaceport. Offer to help others out with the proviso that they help you out a bit. All give and take, but it works ![]()
And make sure whoever helps you knows you appreciate it! A 'thanks a lot man, I couldn't have done it without you' makes people feel good ![]()

Guess you havent played X-Wing or Tie Fighter series before JTL? They had the same overhard missions that took long long time to complete. Though they did include skip 3 missions option to Tie Fighter.
Just saying, I too hate it when/if I die after fighting for an hour and then getting blasted by spawn of tier 5's that just happened to be at the area of my escort mission. Bringing a friend or even friends along for the fight gets you through any mission quite easily. Just need wingmen.
yes, wingmen help...
I hate escort missions... this is when I usually try to recruit a wingman. "Hey, can you cover this shuttle while I use the bathroom?"
I will say... my first loooooooong escort mission went over like a fart in church.
"Come on.... how much longer... sheesh... gah.... please be done.... gah..."
It would be cool if the escorts never lasted more than an hour and the difficulty was based on numbers of enemies/ai/weak shuttle/etc... 2 hours is a long time, especially for a casual gamer.
Chin up - eventually you will either:
Get 2 full hours of free time and complete the mission...
or
A wingman to cover you while you AFK to deal with RL/Bathroom/etc...
(Oh another idea - maybe escorts should tell you before hand how long they are... "Captain, it will take about 2 hours to get the shuttle into position.." or something)

" just because youre too stupid to fly the missions correctly doesent mean the game is not well designed. i thouroly enjoyed all my piloting proffesions. they are designed to weed out the weak. they have done so once more."
Well done. Good to see healthy discussion is alive and well. Designed to weed out the weak? Yes they have. They've highlighted your weak debating skills. Nice.
" I mean come on, its a game! Every game if you dont complete the mission you have to start over. "
Did you not read my previous post? I gave examples of how MODERN games allow you to save your progress. You're talking about old Mario games ffs! Even retro games (which I love btw) have save game features so that you DON'T have to restart right at the beginning again. And games like Doom 3 have a 'quick save' feature that lets you restart wherever you want.
If you accept bad game design and make up excuses for it, then game designers will not feel the need to put more thought into how people play a game.
I have personally advised developers on how to make their games better, working for one of the big console manufacturers. I'm a freelance games writer. And I've just been asked to submit two designs to a major game development company.
While I don't claim to know EVERYTHING about games design, I do know that a game should be challenging, interesting, fair and above all fun. On the whole, JTL is a lot of fun, but it falls down when it comes to badly implemented mission structure.
Read the posts by Grunjin, Spacey and especially DarthGorilla. They have the right idea.
And people have generally been constructive in this thread. Many have suggested that getting friends to come along would help, and I know it does as I've done this myself. That's a constructive suggestion. Saying someone's 'too stupid' to do the missions doesn't help with anything now does it?
Peace all.
