w-t-f, the mon cal? dood mon cals were slightly smaller than ISD's. if SOE did them no bigger than gunships then they need pimpslapped![]()
and umm... well i never really read all those books... never went out and bought them, but i really want to lol. only one i have to quote is the Essential Guide
also. in my quote, Medical Frigate is italicized. this means that it is a NAME of a ship. the ship the nebulon-b is turned into is the term 'medical frigate' in general, not a specific noun. im thinkin two seperate things here?

Later on, in the future in our timeline a new series of vessels purpose built to be warships will be named the MC90 line.Mon Cal Cruisers appear to field slightly less in the way of weapons than an equivilent imperial design but have superior shielding, they used multilayered shields so that they could switch between shield banks in battle and keep their own guns firing a lot longer, this and the converted nature of the ships made repairs and maintenence very time consuming etc.
It (super star destroyer) was 3km in the RPG books give or take a few hundred meters. How accurate is that? Hard to say.. dont think I've ever read any official statements for that ship.
The Mon Cal ships had other advantages besides just size and firepower though. They had much more redundancy in systems and their "skin" was basically ablative to absorb alot of the incoming fire.

and i quote the Essential Guide To Vehicles And Vessels:
"Notable Mon Cal ships include the round, blimp-shaped Headquarters Frigate (also known as Home One) and the winged Medical Frigate."
theres my source
Remember the first rule of Star Wars; the movies always trump other sources. Even then, pretty much all other sources support the movie byrefering tothe Neb-B as the Medical Frigate. I'd chalk that Essential entry as an editorial mistake. Sure, there may have been a converted Mon Cal cruiser, but it wasn't the medical frigate everyone saw in the films or is talking about here. Hmm, you gonna go make me rummage through my closet for old booksnow? ![]()
to quote from your same Essential source:
"The Alliance's medical frigate, a converted Nebulon-B, has treatment facilities for over seven hundred patients."
to quote from the SW: Technical Journal:
Rebel Medical Frigate. "...By converting a Nebulon-B escort frigate from its standard hanger/starfighter launch bay configuration, the Rebel forces have made it possible to save the lives of many of the brave pilots and crewmembers whose lives are dedicated to the struggle against the Empire."
to quote Heir to the Empire SB:
"In addition, the ship's design lends it to diverse mission profiles, including modification to serve as a medical frigate, command vessel, or even cargo transport."
to quote Rebellion SB:
Escort Frigates - Nebulon-B "The Alliance medical frigate, a variant of the standard frigate configuration, travels with the fleet and is equipped with the most sophisticated medical equipment available."
to quote SW.com databank:
Escort Frigate - "Enough escort frigates were in use by the Alliance that they informally were known as Rebel cruisers. Many were refitted for other duties -- such as Rebel medical frigates. In these vessels, Alliance techs have replaced the launch bays with hospital suites. After sustaining injuries at Cloud City, Luke Skywalker was treated aboard a medical frigate."

Mine is the original 1996 edition. For the "New Essential Guide to..." titles they put in color illustrations.
yeah, mine is the 1996 edition as well. perhaps there was a typo? or it was fixed mid-production?
Those RPG books made a list of ships, sucked long and hard on their thumb and entered the stats.
If you want to know the real lengths and stats, go to theforce.net
The lengths given there are based on every scrap of evidence they could find, including the RPG books. And they find the RPG books are contradicted by ILM/Lucasarts statements, models, film footage, original movie designs, etc, etc. most of the time.
Edit 2: You can't go by sizes to determine if something is a capital ship or not. It's based purelyfunction, defense and firepower compared to other ships in the same navy. If you go by size every ship in the empire is a capital ship. But the mile long ISD's are "just" cruisers.

Yes, you are thinking of two seperate ships. The medical frigate everyone sees in the movie and talks about is the Medical Frigate Redemption. Most are not refering to that singular reference from the Essential Guide. The writers of that book took some liberties and made some editorial mistakes: notice in the book that the images for the Imperial Star Destroyer and Victory-class have been swapped. So I take many things said in there with a grain of salt unless it's confirmed by a second source.
But anyway, the consensus among debatorson the subject settled on the idea that there are two seperate Medical Frigates: the Nebulon Frigate Redemption (aka Rebel Cruiser, Rebel Medical Frigate, Escort Frigate)as seen in ESB and also spoke of in RotJ, and another never seen or spoke of Mon Cal cruiser.
