Actually it is the law. granted I've not taken Business Law in college in many years, but there are requirements for entering into a contract. One of the basic ones deals with age. Quite simply until a person reaches the age of 18 they are not considered an adult, but a minor. That means as a minor they cannot vote, work past certain hours at night or join the Military. the last part can be waived I think by parental consent. In addition, they cannot enter certain types of contracts. S\ince JTL beta deals with releasing coding to a game still in production this validates a contract, which cannot be enforced once entered with a minor. In addition, SOE will be looking for players with maturity, who can objectivly help troubleshoot. This is something I regret to say most teenagers currently do not have. to be fair, I would say when I was under 18 I might not of had the maturity they are asking for.

Ok. its not necessarily a "law" that SOE HAS to use. They just choose to use it for this closed beta testing. Not such a big deal. Although I think it woulda been an excellent and very profitable/smart move if the devs would have made people reserve the game and paid in full for it to get into this beta. they would prolly get a record for most pre-ordered game. Maybe not, but still, they'd really boost sales. expecially before it came out. Well, i'm not over 18 but i did reserve it so I can wait. Just cause a few other players get to have the "feel of the game" first doesnt make that big a difference. Not like they're keeping whats given or 'earned' to them in beta

Unless you would happen to be the american producer for Lineage II, then it's a demo, not a testing session.

I agree, then you could choose the next person and try them, so on and so forth.

This has to be the first time that I have seen someone who doesn't meet age requirements lie about their age. Think about it. It's not a hard thing to do.

Im sure the Devs know alot of people under 18 would make very good testers.Unfortuantelytheres nothing they can do if they wish to protect themselves in the early stages of beta. Everyone working on this game will of signed a NDA not just testers.
It has been mentioned there will be a stage when the beta won't be covered by the nda so anyone of any age will be able to be selected. Im sure the devs will want as many people as they can to test.

I know, but you get to test it with the servers loaded if you have everyone beta testing. THis would show you what it would be like in individual communities.
They are still going to test it with full server load. They just don't need 100k people signed up to test 20 servers. They only need 5-10k dedicated players to test 1 server, so the whole "community feel and server load" doesn't apply here. And for the person that stated:
would someone please explain this law to me, I know that we needed to sign something, but i dont remember ANYWHERE in my SWG registration (Which was the first day it went live) that it required a signature. I am very upset that it says I need to be over 18 when my credit card clearly shows my age.
If you are under 18, you shouldn't have a credit card. If you are using your parents credit card, then that is not your age and they signed the EULA when they agreed to give there credit card number. (The same as there signature) So yes, in some ways it is the same as when you started SWG.
Two things to keep in mind here. It is a closed beta in which they want a NDA to be signed. So no you may not sign an NDA if you are under age (binding contract stuff) and I would assume that for NDA's that a third party stipulation (i.e. your parents) can not vouge for minors in this case. But we need someone that knows a lot about third party law to answer that. If they have open Beta then you will be able to beta test, just not in the closed beta. But the big thing, SOE is a private corporation and they can do whatever the Hell they want. Not one of us have a legal right to be part of Beta, but some of us are prohibited by law to sign NDA's on their own. It is okay to say it isn't fair and such, but please there has been at least 50 of these threads in the last few days. Join in on one of those, andstop making new threads about this cluttering up the boards

Look... let me explain this ismore simple terms... however, I should first point out that I am a Canadian, not American -- however, I have studiedboth judicial systems a bit in college.... when it comes to contract agreements, our 2 countries have nearly identical systems (the only difference being age).
Here is why they cannot accept people under 18 for the beta test.
1) They require you to agree to a contract that forbids you from revealing any information about a game they want you to test.
2) Any citizen under the age of 18, under law, is not considered of "sufficientsound mind" to properly engage and agree to a legal contract (meaning the court doesn't think you're experienced enough to truly understand the significant of a legal binding contract and the ramifications for violating it).
3) If a person under 18 does agree and sign a contract and violates its terms, the courts will not deem the contract to have been valid because the person was too young to understand the significance and seriousness of it.
4) If you violate the contract and are under 18, Sony cannot pursue a civil lawsuit against you because the court will refuse to recognize the contract -- it was not a legal contract.
5) In order to prevent people from leaking info about a game, they must ensure all people who sign it are legally bound by it (anyone over 18)... since anyone under 18 can completely violate a contract and the courts MUST dismiss all charges against the minor, these minors could just go rampant and reveal info about a game that Sony did not want revealed --- and thye would be unable to pursue charges against that person.
Basically, Sony just wants to make sure they can legally sue anyone in their Beta test who decides to violate the NDA contract.... they cannot sue anyone under 18 since any contract they sign is immediately rejected by the courts.

Hm? I wasn't blaming anyone.. I was explaining the law to some people who didn't seem to understand it... it's a sensible law, anyone who thinks otherwise is a naive twit.
