just remembered a quote from the A New Hope that would help this...
Falcon come out of Lightspped and is in the debre field of Alderann, a tie come up and passes tha falcon, and kenobi or Solo (can't remeber... gosh it's been forever I'm ashed of myself) says that it's a "short range fighter... there's no way it could have gotten out hear all by itself..." I know it's not stone solid evidence, but it lends credence and it's cannon

They are exactly that short range fighters..
They were not for galactic travel they were only for the sole purpose of escorting star destroyers thats why they shouldn't have hyperdrives
but continuity has gone bye bye so oh well

Obi-wan basically said in episode 4: "That's a short range fighter, it couldn't have gotten out here all by itself." Err...I know that's not the exact quote...but its the gist of it.
But he didn't say, "That's a tie fighter. No way it could have flown through hyperspace nor does it have shields."
I don't know, I guess I'm just trying to get people to realize that it's really not a big deal to be able to modify TIE's to have extra stuff.
Why would something designed to be a short range fighter....have the capability to have hyperdrives?

Just because the Empire didn't put hyperdrives onTIE's (to cut costs), does not mean one couldn't modify them.
Something not having a hyperdrive =/= something not being able to have a hyperdrive.

Dude, when you design something, in this case a short range fighter...why the heck would you be consdering: "Oh, lets make it so you can upgrade it to have hyperdrives."
When you do something like that, its no longer a short range fighter! And that's what the empire was thinking when developing the TIE fighter, for short range purposes only.

BTW, I would like to state that I don't care if TIEs have hyperdrives or not.

Well for all of you crazy ppl out there, the guide to starships and vehicles book states they aren't large enough to have HD/shields...thats just the basic TIE/Bomber though...some other models do have shields though...but nobody would fly a TIE if it was 1 or 2 shot kills...its all about he balance i guess...

Well, you are probably right; I guess all I'm saying is that it should not be such a "transgression against continuity" when it was mostly other games that set the precedent of tie's not having HD's.
I really don't care either way except I want it to be fair to Imp's and reb's alike. That includes if Imp's get to dock with cap ships and make jumps, then reb's should too.

I agree
Who cares if they have hyperdrives.
Lets also look at the fact no one will bother using ties, if they are not on the same level as other ships.

Yes, I'm willing to sacrifice continuity for fairness.
But if that's the case...a TIE should lookdifferent when modified...but oh well.(I don't understand why DEVs decided to do it like that, people will join Rebels just so they can have different looking ships)

isn't there a scene in a new hope... where han and obi one and luke encounter a small tie fighter... and they say something along the lines... of
blah blah blah... it's just a scout fighter... it couldn't have gotten all the way out here by itself???
that general knowledge might allude to the fact that everyone new those tie fighters weren't equipped with long range hyperdrive systems... or other dorky such jargon.

QFE.
Man o man.
One guy says one thing about a short range craft and everyone is willing to make the game bad for imperials. I mean, the movie didn't even specify whether the short range craft could have had a HD built in.
The "canon" that everyone is so upset about comes from a GAME based on the SW universe.
Besides, it's not even an IMPORTANT quote, or anything. It doesn't change anything else about the movies at ALL.
The star wars universe will be quite OK if some weak-ass ship(that hardly anyone is going to want to fly anyway) is able to upgradea certain component to it. You can still roleplay your little hearts out in spite of this.
Note: I am a roleplayer.
