I still think the right freighter can be made effective against solo attacks from fighters. The fact that it may require several passes at close range to damage means a well manned stand-off weapon against a solo fighter engaging on a perdictable course should be effective.
Im not to concenred about tactical missions because I assume privateer missions will also include some type of non-combatant option. All I need to do is be able to hold my own for a little until i can blow a trailer and then enter hyper-space. My hope is that every mission wont require dog-fighting to complete, unless you choose a combat path.

I think it'd be neat if downthe road we saw a bg increase int he types of flyable craft. Fighters and light freighters are fine for a start, ut moving into larger transports and cap ships down the road would be awesome and I think would become a big selling point too.

Hehe, that'd be sweet, or get things like the lancer frigate or...ooh! The Interdictor cruiser! Man could you see how much crap one of THOSE would stir up o.o

Im not sure about capital ships. That seems bit extreme, with too much power in one player's hands.
I think larger freighters are viable because of their limited firepower to mass ration compared to warships, plus a bit of balances by making them less manuverable, more durable, great rear shields, etc. Theselarger ships wouldnt be equipped to betruly viable in an offrensive rolelike a capital ship of comparable size.
Yeah, I'd expect them to hold their own against thevast majority of solo fighter attacks, but they should be vulnerable to coordinated attacks by multiple ships or a capital ship. Their mainadvantage should be straight ahead speed(relaitive to size, but with slow acceleration) and their abilty to take a beating, dish out a little punishment along the way until they can hyper-jump the hell out of there.

the problem with them is that in x-wing and allt he toehr games like that if i saw one of thoes big ugly frighters it was like an addiction i just had to blow it up even if it was on my side and was a save the big ugly freighter mission

No prob, expect to have guns, hopefully multi-crewed with gunners. If I can, i will opt for some guns that will make a little fighter wimper if he gets hit. I may not be able to chase you down and turn with you, but my guns should hurt...and hurt bad. Im going to try and make you guys soil yourself.
The hope is that solo attacks on my freighter would be very dangerous.

It would be a waste of time creating them if they aint got anything to do with missions

You want big and ugly? How about an Action IV bulk freighter? "Wild Karrde" anyone?
Big also means more room for engines, and with bigger engines, more guns
Bigger engines, bigger shield generators, more sensor space.. the list goes on.

*chuckles* Ah yes, the joys of toys
As for cap ships being too much power, not if you do it right. Ie. it MUST be crewed by gunners, etc. So you need a full PA to run it or such, then it's not such an easy task to undertake. And if the prospect of destroyable systems is brought in (like in the X-wing games) then it makes it possible for attacking players to level the field. I'm not saying it should be a launch thing, but efinitely something to consider as time goes on

I'd love to have a "Wild Karrde" type freighter...I actually mentione it in a pervious post.
With respect to freighters not having a place in missions, Im sure their will be more than attack/combat missions in space, just like there arent just attack missions on planets. Odds are the quest and missions to skill up will be combat missions, but Im sure after one completes these missions, there will be other types to round out theJTL experience. Freighters will have a part in the JTL, I have no doubt, to not have them be a part of JTL in my opinion would be a mistake.
Theoritically missions for freighters can be to transport people/groups, do merchant transport missions for differnet factions, smugglers, Bazaar terminals. Bazaar terminal missionscould provide an affordable means for interplaneary deliver ofoff planet purchases on the bazaar.Spaceliners can deliver groups of people to planets, people who may not have JTL or may have single-seat fighters, but want to do group missions. People coulddo merchant transport missions for planet governments, the Empire, the Rebels....for the powerfulTrade Federationthat threatened Naboo. There are all kinds of reasons for a transport model. Its benefical to players, for the economy, for realism, etc. Imgaine all the overts or those who own only faction crafts who may want to get someplace without being attacked(I think faction crafts are always attackableby opposing faction crafts PvP and PvE). Neutral transport may be there best way to make it somewhere unharrassed.
