Thread: Whats the Star Wars Universe without big ugly bulk freighters?

Here's an idea... this seems like the best place for it, sorry for the thread hijack, but well, just read on.
All items in the inventory currently have a 'volume' stat. I assume this was in place when our inventory space was managed in a more 'realistic' manner.
I propose that stat be brought into use to make 'freighting' possible, and useful to the community, rather than a pure RP activity (since there's no practical reason for it at the moment).
Allow a character to carry a certain amount. Make large 1000+ unit stacks cumbersometo carry on your person. Allow a character to carry enough for PERSONAL gear (armour, weapons, tools, a 'useable' amount of resources).
Allow cargo to be store in owned vehicles (x34, swoop) or droids (load lifter should carry loads, no?) The swoop with roughly the same capacity as a character, the X34 with roughly double, the load lifter with 'lots'.
Starports should have a 'cargo door'. This should be accessed by a terminal outside the building. This should bring up an interface where you can access all your cargo holding vehicles, droids, etc, so long as they are not on your datapad -i.e they must be 'out'.
Implement a few new 'cargo speeders' - to allow surface freighting.
If this is done post-JTL I'd be very happy - freighting guilds could form and be useful to move large amounts of resources from place to place. Coupled with the ideas elsewhere for freighting goods from bazaar sales I think this might make the SWG world seem a lot more dynamic, and actually bring some traffic to the NPC cities (since that's where the bazaars and starports are).
Oh, cargo should be lootable from destroyed droids, speeders etc., just to add some risk to those freight handlers that are overt.
Smugglers could have the ability to traffic illicit cargo through starports like this, in addition to avoiding NPC ship scans...
What do you guys reckon?

Only if we can hijack them and steel the cargo like real pirates!! YarrrrrrrrrrrR!

That would mean allowing ships to dock and board each other... tricky, programming wise, and I'm sure we won't see that for some time.
Another thing that would make freighter ships essential would be the ability to pick cargo up in space by tractor beam - I can't think of how a TIE could pick up cargo... get your fighter escort to blast 'em, and pick up the pieces!

There certainly needs to be a storage revamp. It should apply to personal inventory, droids, speeders, etc. It should also provide new variants of droids, speeders and other items that are used for storage and item transport.

Don't be so sure that ships can't dock. it's very possible... VERY possible... but the boarding (i.e. - corvette-type 'ground' type combat) does seem hard to do. Just me two cents...

Yes this is like waht i poseteed a while back it is a great idea. Also make frieghter ships capture able. When u board teh ship to steal the cargo there is a panel that you go to. A certin profesion can "Hack" the panel an try to take over the ship, if they fail a self destruct is activated and they have 2 min to get out of there.

So... the player who owns the freighter loses either way? Don't think I like that idea :/ How about, instead of a self-destruct countdown, it's a countdown until the automated defenses activate? That way, there's still some excitement, and the player's ship isn't taken away from him either way
