Freighters may actually give Binary Lifter Droids a purpose in game.
That and a new inventory model.

I'd like something a bit bigger than any of the TY series, but not too big. Not too small, not too big, don't attract much attention
Like Talon Karrde's bulk freighter, Wild Karrde?

Ialso think that to make a viable Transport industry we need to lower the amount of resources a person can carry around (not lowering the amount of items, just the amount of resources that makes 1 item). This would be a big blow to alot of people though, so its likely, if anything, they would only ever be raised, its unfortunate but true.
Maybe they should increase ticket fare, so that certain places are truely so expensive to travel by shuttle that seeing a Transport Captain is the way to go.
Also when Smuggler gets worked out I fully expected that certain people and cargo's would be illegal to the point where they shouldn't be able to travel without being attacked or massively fined... but thats pure speculation. As mentioned already without supporting game mechanics it will be tough to be a true privateer.
And people who are not merchants shouldn't have vendors, and dropping MerchantProffessionshould vape your current vendors (this is actually happening/happened though right? - not a merchant, totally ignorant of it,Ineed to read there forums.)
Now I am about to mention reasons for Freighters, that may have been a notion of many others, but maybe they want to keep it a secret to make some credits out of it; sorry if I mess something up but how many people will actually read this anyway
I have not been able to read the entire thread so I will likely mention something alredy covered(boy alot of people what to be freighter owners... very cool).
A few ways to make money as a transport trader, only on the assumption that your Ship carries a fair amount of items though.
- You are a mobile house. How many people would pay you some credits so they could move there house in one go without having to line up a few friends, there storagedroids and three backpacks. Intergalatic movers is an interesting way to make money. It would only be sporradic work but you could charge 15K or more for the luxury of one go moving.
- On that note, mobile storage. Guildmates need space for a few things, charge them for the space and the ability to meet them anywhere with there stuff.
- Everyone is concentrating onresources as the thing we should be moving... um, no, think in game mechanic terms and you will see the possibilities. (take resources along for those who want them, create your own list of commodities contacts in the artisan community, charge an invisible10% transport fee)
Crates with good items needed at multiple vendors is what we should be shipping. Resources ignored for the moment, (imagine they are just ether and free to all - since they basically are). Right now I see basically1% of the merchantsdoing the supplier tovendor thing (guilds do, but thats on request), mostly because vendors are easily obtained. Buying from one place and selling it at another is a good way to make money, if only in the long term. Being able to load up your ship fly heaps of crated items to another place and sell them is something that doesn't happen enough, maybe because it does need alot of capital to work and a good idea of what a particular market needs.
- Space loot. An Xwing can kill alot of ships, but can they store all that loot in one go? Think about it, and remember Freelancer, bigger holds meant you could stay out there longer and plug badguys for loot before coming in. Just a thought
Wishing I didn't rant...

I so want a frigate or freighter, i think it would be cool if all the turrets had to be manned.A freighter that specific design for a guild hall in space would be cool with a 2 ship dock.

Damn, AraDan, those are some GOOD ideas! Actually, only one or two of what you mentioned were touched on, in a way. And nobody mentioned space moving. That's genius! And I bet you could make alot more than 15k a pop doing that
VERY cool, kudos for such a cool idea
And the loot carrier idea was great, too! if you have any more ideas, please post 'em; you're doing great so far
