Hi. I'm Calan Thurow, a programmer working on JTL. I've been on Star Wars Galaxies pretty much since the beginning.

Most of the things I did in the original game are things you wouldn't see directly. I wrote the persistence (database) system, the system for dividing a planet between servers, etc. I also worked on the resource system and harvesters.

For JTL, I've worked on things that are more visible, which has been a lot of fun for me. I wrote the logic for how missiles fly and the effects they play. I worked on capital ship and bomber AI, and the autopilot system. I wrote the system for radial asteroids (the small rocks or pieces of debris that bounce off your ship when you fly through an asteroid field).

Currently I'm working on bug fixes. At this stage of the project, the bugs tend to be scattered over different systems, so every day I work on something else. The issues I'm looking at today involve grouping and the way groups are handled in the UI. Tomorrow I'll probably be working on something completely different!

Um, your title is "Leader" and your handle color is green

Ok, I think it's working now. I wonder if I can count that as a bug I fixed today

This literally begs the question.....do you get paid by salary, by the hour, or by the bug? If one of the first two and not the latter, maybe that's an idea.....paid by the bug, just imagine how much quicker we might get things fixed!

Just kidding of course.

Hello gentle peeps My name is Janessa Johansson and I'm a game designer for JTL. Surprise I'm the worldbuilder for JTL, making zones nifty and making missions really hard with all my NPC spawners Right now, I'm testing out the missions and making sure they're good for launch! In the future, I'm going to be working on side quests and all sorts of space-y goodness! I don't post much, 'cause I mostly read posts and then fix things that have to do with worldbuilding (missions, etc). But I'm always around. Send me a message whenever. Rock on, beta peeps!

Hi Kylaena I'm Frosshkk, I enjoy long walks on the beach, heavy lightning weapons, and watching criminals beg and plead for their life.

My favorite food is the blood of Rebel traitors and I enjoy listening to speeches from the Emperor in the comfort of my own cave.

I shower often and I don't play well with others, so.....are you seein anyone? I would really like to show you my wonderful collection of gadgets and trinkets I use to maim....errr.....kill.....errr...

dispatch...yeah that works..... wanted felons and reprobates of the galaxy. Please send me a message anytime, Oh! and I hope you don't mind that I shed my skin once a month, I promise I am very tidy about the whole thing and I won't get any on you.

Hi everyone!
In the ground game I did world building and quests, like the Nightsister spider cave and the Scythe blade quest. In JTL I was put on making the Rebel quests which has been a great experience. Mostly because I'm prone to the Empire (evil is good) and this gave me a chance to slay so much Rebel scum that I expect the Emperor to replace Vader with me any day now. (j/k).

For some reason, you Europeans love being imperial.

Great to see all the "shy" Devs coming out of their caves etc ...You all are doing a phenominal job IMO...Keep Up the great work ...and just because some of you are more "behind the scenes" Devs does not mean you are not appreciated ...soooo here is my challenge to all you under 50 posts Devs *cough* Rick Delashmit *cough* ...don't be shy ...come drop by and say hi and let us know what is happening with you ...after all communication is what makes all types of relationships work ...hehe...so thanks again to you all...Outstanding effort ...looking forward to the actual launch with 99% of all the bugs under boot ...

I'd also like to post a big thank you This game has come a long way since the initial release, and continues to be the best MMORPG I've ever played, thanks to all the hard work you've put into it. The attention to detail and depth to the gameplay is really astounding.

I'm desperately wanting to get into MMORPG Programming/Development. Can you offer any tips to recent Computer Science graduates as to how they can get their foot in the door? Every job opportunity I've seen for game development requires a year or two of experience, which I cannot find anywhere! How did you all get started?

Great idea as far as this thread goes IMHO. I know a few other game developers that are taking this approach one step further and creating a sort of weekly "diary". Each developer posts a paragraph or blurb about who they are, what's happening, what they are working on, have worked on, will work on, or just whatever. It opens things up quite a bit and allows the customers to not only associate the "DEVS" with a human beings, but also shows the customer that things ARE being worked on.

/kudos on this thread

Disregard this message, computer error. I don't think the Beta Forums like me very much, this is the second time it's double posted like this.

"SpaceUI comm, is purdy! I love the taunts and when I communicate with the stations. This currently bleed over to ground..Fixed today. But, it's too purdy to only be in space. Toggle for "speech boxes/comm" on ground? please? It's just so purdy and actually functioning so well. sometimes, the speechbox ui, bleeds out of view, if you're in odd angles..a comm screen wouldnt do that."

Where exactly would you want to use it? On the ground you can see the person you're talking to, so the vidcomm doesn't seem neccessary, or maybe i don't understand your question :]

Sorry for not being too clear.

What I meant was:

Could we get the vidcomm on ground too?

As it is, the chatcomm from NPC's, moves around if they move. Depending on the angle you look at the NPC, the chatcomm, can end up halfway out of screen, and in some occasions, no matter 1st person or 3rd person view, you have to move alot, just to get the chatcomm on your screen.

A toggle, that lets you choose if you want chatcomm or the vidcomm, would be a welcome addition to the ground too. Besides, as I said, the vidcomm is too pretty to only be left in space. And the bug did show us that the vidcomm was possible on the ground.

(And I had just gottenused to using that one instead of the chatcomm. Easier, prettier and better for the eyes.)
