Thread: Discuss: Melee vs Ranged Defense
yes but the bigger part of it MrSheep is that the aa'kuan rings only matter if you are holding a ranged weapon. This is just like the vegisparine/thundercloud issue.

correct - all this evidence backs up the conculsions we have seen fro other tests higher up the thread that its a def with rather than def vs mod
Agreed.
Now, how do we test the defender lines?... Maybe two jedi, one with the ranged line and one with the melee line??? Any ideas?
umm...Im pretty sure it was already done above...

yes we dont need to test them specifically
ithe lines grant melee and ranged def - one from 4xxx and one from x4xx
since we have proved conclusively that the defence is a defence WITH a weapon rather than VS a weapon the ranged def line from defender WILL give you no bonuses whilst you hold a saber but will save you some damage if you equip a rifle. There is no need to test the line specifically as we have proved what the mods do.

These numbers aren't actual, but I did several rounds of testing, and came up with something like this.
I take a hit from a saber for 800 points of damage, without using force armour, or any melee defense foods.
I eat melee defense food.
I take a hit from a saber for 800 points of damage, without force armour, having eaten one melee defense food.
Conclusion: Doesn't work.
de- equip and re equip your weapon and it will work

So Sheep, in my tortured previous post, do I have this right now?
If so, this is nuts. But it does explain a lot.
Bottom line - we have no ranged defense unless we hold a gun. That's why the devs have put stuff in the .TRE files to take our force powers away (in a future publish) when we do. If we hold a gun, we have no melee defense.
Why? Because we are 100% melee to them, including Master Powers.
Bottom line - We have our melee defense when we do not hold a weapon, when we hold a melee weaponor when we hold our sabers. Plus, Vegesparine is screwed up and last until we uequip our sabers or log out.
Is this right? Lol, I'm freaking out!!!!!

pretty much right - except in your phrasing
when you have a melee weapon equipped tyour melee def mod covers you for all attacks
the same is true for a ranged weapons and ranged defence
its not that a melee weapon means you have 0 ranged defence
just that your ranged def doesnt apply when holding a melee weaon and vice versa
example
400 melee def and 100 ranged def
hold a saber youll take little damage from anything (ranged or melee)
hold a pistol and anything (ranged or mellee will pummel you)
OK, I'm home now, had a couple of beers. I got it.
Hold a melee weapon or no weapon and melee defense is operative. Ranged Defense numbers don't count.
Hold a gun and ranged defense is operative. Melee Defense numbers don't count.
I understand why Master Defenders with guns do pretty well now. I also understand why that's probably gonna get nerfed. And that upcoming nerf will suck, too, lol.
Thanks so much for your information. You have helped so many here.
Now the only question is whether this is by design or yet another in an incredibly long line of dev screwups.
I think it's probably the latter.

yes this is pretty major
eg rifleman very heavy on ranged def - very weak on melee def - comes out of this fairly well as his melee def mods are meaningless
pistoleer - more balanced and more melee def mods - comes out worse as he has less ranged def than the (supposedly weaker) rifleman
this discovery breaks the rock papaer scisoer mentality of the 3 ranged and 3 melee profs meaning that rifleman and swordsman (?) are now the clear strongest classes for offence AND defence - instrad of trading offence for defence
Lol, I did my token respec for my MBH by adding Master Pistoleer - I have some old pistols that rock and that's what I wanted.
I also have an MBH/Master Rifleman, too, though.![]()
My testing and MasterSheeps testing both seem to back up the original poster saying that food and now rings are only in effect when holding that kind of weapon.
My question is: How do we know that the defender lines actually work the same way?
Also, the same question applies to melee and ranged defense tapes. Can we test to see if they act the same way as food and rings?
I know you guys are saying we tested a couple things, thus all defenses are that way, but I'm not sure I'm ready to make that leap. But, I am with the rest of you in saying I'll drop master Defender if the ranged line only works when holding a rifle (assuming the nerf about jedi skills only working while holding a saber is true).
im xx3x defender atm - nearly finished my grind ill pick up 1 in the ranged def line and see if it makes a difference - but im 100% sure it wont

Ahhh, this is a very important thing to remember to do. Because, Sheep, I'm guessing that if you do this with NO weapon in your hand, it doesn't work.
But if you eat the food empty-handed and then equip your saber or gun, it will work.
Or should you eat the food with your weapon equipped, then de-equip and re-equip?
Which?
switch weapons whilst the food is active and it works - once the food effect goes the next time you swithc weapons the effect dissapears - it seems the system only can only take accont of your defence numbers when you switch weapons
This is incredibly good stuff, Sheep.
So, to get the effect of the food you must:
1. Have your saber or gun equipped.
2. Eat the food.
3. De-equip your saber or gun.
4. Re-equip your saber or gun.
This is the correct sequence?
