the innitial test (chef forum) was vs a ranged attacker and mine vs a melee attacker - both show exactly the same thing
Yes - you have proved that elshandruu works based on teh weapon you're using, but not the mods from def 0400.
i proved that the basic ranged and melee def mods are also Defence VS mods too
As I understand it this would not be difficult to correct, since all they would have to do is just allign all professions whether one is range or melee to amount to the same melee or ranged def respectively. My concern though is what is to be done with the lines that hold the opposite def in any given profession, say defender for us jedi. Althea the 0/4/0/0 hold IA, ranged defense needs to be replaced, my question and concern is with what? more melee def, a new skill, nothing... its very disturbing as this totally changes the outcome of templates, jedi or not.
While we on the subject I feel dodge needs to be addresses also. Taking +51 dodge food does increase defenses, but we are not fully aware if +25dodge CA's (assuming they still exist) would work and stack or not.
Yes, the DEVs needs to address this topic. And kudos to those who discovered this. I think they should get to name this as they please. ![]()

yes this is pretty major
eg rifleman very heavy on ranged def - very weak on melee def - comes out of this fairly well as his melee def mods are meaningless
pistoleer - more balanced and more melee def mods - comes out worse as he has less ranged def than the (supposedly weaker) rifleman
this discovery breaks the rock papaer scisoer mentality of the 3 ranged and 3 melee profs meaning that rifleman and swordsman (?) are now the clear strongest classes for offence AND defence - instrad of trading offence for defence
BINGO...someone screwed up big time...

oh and 2.5hrs and my vegeparsine buff is still holding out strong ![]()
seems like its an eat the food when you log on - then equip weapon (saber in my case) and dont worry about it again till you switch weapons

careful...you may get banned for showing how to use an exploit...

Noting from the Character Sheet, the display reads
---------------------------------------
Defense (with ... Lighsaber)
Melee XXX
Ranged XXX

Which to me implies your defense against those types of attacks.
If what is being shown in the testing on this thread data was intended and well thought out surelythe "Ranged XXX" mod would not show when a melee weapon my LS is equiped and vice versa
Garax
Farstar
entirely correct - this is how it used to work pre CU and (we assume) during the time just after the CU - somewhere along the lines it got messed up though - which we have only discovered today...
dont trust any of that...its very inaccurate...

Just did some testing on this.
I could only alter my ranged def using an aa'kuan ring. Not sure if it is the same defense as the defender tree or not.
Results:
Increasing ranged defense as displayed on the character sheet reduced damage taken only when holding a rifle (prolly other ranged weapons as well).
This supports the vegisparine theory.
I cannot say how the defense in the defender line works as I am not willing to drop skills to test it. Some up and coming types may be able to work something out.
Also: with an additional 30 melee and ranged in clothes I found zero difference due to the small change the ring made. I had to test without the defense clothes on to see any difference.
Data:
attacker was a smuggler/dabler using a laser rifle and ranged shot. Sometimes using /attack when unarmed.
Defender:
melee: 255
ranged: 235
vs ranged attack:
ua: 555
LS: 555
rifle: 561
vs melee attack
ua: 69
LS: 69
rifle: 70
-----------------------
putting on 1 aa'kuan ring +5 def
melee: 255
ranged: 240
vs ranged:
ua: 555
LS: 555
rifle: 560
vs melee:
ua: 69
LS: 69
rifle: 69
--------
You can see the damge taken when holding a rifle when down by 1 pt against both melee and ranged attacks.
