Thread: Would you have bought or would you still play SWG if there were no jedi? (Updated due to NGE)
Yes.
I didn't know you could be a jedi when I bought it. Course I'd never heard of a MMORPG and didn't really know what I was buying.
I'd buy it again in pre-cu version with or without jedi. I would not purchase the post-cu version, I continue to play, but mostly cause I have so much invested in the crazy game already.

But to answer the original question, yes, I would have bought it anyway.
True. There was always knowledge that Jedi would be in the game. But the DEVs (Raph and Kevin specifically) stated that obtaining Jedi and maintaining the Jedi would be extremely difficult. Raph also said not to expect too many Jedi on the servers and that seeing one "would be a spectatcle indeed."How interesting things have changed.
But that has nothing to do with this discussion.
I know...I was just responding to someones comment about it not being advertised (Jedi) when SWG came out. I was pointing out that SWG had every intention to bring Jedi in.
Technically, I did. There were no jedi at launch, and they were (when implemented) going to be so uber rare that there might as well NEVER be any in the game.
I never intended to be a jedi. I wanted to try the other professions. Maybe be a smuggler/rogue type character. Or try out life as a crafter/merchant. Those were my first goals when I got the game on launch day. As I played my pistoleer/weaponsmith first character, I saw other professions that looked fun or entertaining. I decided to create additional characters to try them out. There was plenty to do, after all, that wasn't jedi-related.
Besides, jedi were a pipe dream that by all accounts was going to be impossible to get, so why even bother? Everyone had theories, but they were just theories. I'm sure lots of people boughtSWG with the intent of finding that path, but for me, I could have done without being a jedi. After all, there were and are plenty of video games where you can hop into the role of a jedi and go have fun.
I wanted to live in the world of the original trilogy. In the original trilogy, jedi were practically non-existent, and that's what made them exciting.
Once the path to jedi-hood became obvious, I gave it a shot because by that point, it was simply something else to do. I was curious. I wanted to try it. If they had said "no, sorry, you can't be a jedi because you just lucked out on the lottery", I would have shrugged and gone about my business.
True, being a jedi kept me in the game far longer than I would have stayed if not for that grind. And I think that's probably the key thing from SOE's point of view.
At any rate, if I knew then what I know now.... I would never have started down that path at all.
(edit) That was back when there was action in anchorhead. It took me 3 months to leave Mos Eisley. hehe (/edit)
I was such an idiot.

Same here, liked the game much better when there were no Jedi around.
