If youre talking about a plasma saber, then the length is dictated by the strength of the power source. The farther you get away from the power source, the less ionized the gas becomes, and therefore you hit a point where the power is weak enough to no longer ignite a plasma. kind of a terminal distance for the saber
in standard electricity and magnetism, electric fields reduce by a power of 4 as distance increases.

I hadnt thought about using plasma, mainly because i wasnt sure if the containment field could be small enough to shape as a blade (while remaining useable by a man)

Plasma could use a magnetic containment field to adjust the blade length, but like i said anything that disrupts that magentic field would essentially cause a meltdown.a good example of what would constitute a disruption would include walking by your stereo while it's on.
if a plasma was not confined it would simply dissipate, not meltdown. and the good thing about magnetic fields is that they are vectors, and vectors add. so, with a sophisticated sensor system you could detect extraneous EM fields and simply modify your own field to compensate.
i kinda look at it like they're harnessing electricity better..able to control a free flow of electricity and amplifying it by the crystals....thats why there would have to be a super power source at the bottom of the saber to conduct that kind of power..in which there could be some way to manipulate it enough to where it cycles thus not losing any power..kinda how an alternator keeps the battery charged on a car..the car battery supplies power to the ignition..the ignition starts the engine the belts spin the alternator which in turns charges the battery.....thats how i'm seeing it...could be wrong..call me a noob if you want...but from what i've seen about history...if someone wants it bad enough anything is possible...

For a hobby i work with metals ive got a plasma torch that eats through 4 inch steel like butter and has about an 9 inch cutting flame just make everything bigger and add more pressure and you could make a saber looking thing that could slice your arm off with a slash but no saber clashes lol

3- Sabers would turn on and off light a flashlight, not hum, and would certainly not go PPSSSSSSSHHHHEWWW when activated.
Since you are talking about a HUGE release of energy from within the hilt of the saber, the chances are it would make a loud hum as it is activated and used. Think of a power transformer, are they silent? no.
Transformers hum, because of the mains frequency. in UK 50 Herz and that coincides with the sound was of the hum's frequecy. Or a harmonic of the input AC frequency
4- Sabers would travel through other sabers, not impact like a sword.
Again, it is a SOLID beam of energy
5- Sabers would burn through any object touched with no effort whatsoever. You can have it hang on a string and swing back and forth, and it will cut through steel. Light does not require work to move.
Your point being?
6- After each hit, a saber would lose some power because of the light reflected/absorbed by the object it impacted.
Yep, thats exactly what they do... crystal decay.
Oh, and they are FICTIONAL, they can do whatever the writer wants them to

And if by some marvel of science some guy was able to build one, they would never let you use it.
