you know I was thinking about this the other day far too much, and I decided it would not be scientifically possible to create a true light saber, as a light saber is 100% efficient. and well for something to be 100% efficient no energy can be lost. now a light saber gives off a hum and is also a light source, these two require energy to be produced 100% efficency can not be achived. I told my work mate and he just kinda looked at me and asked why the hell was I thinking about that you big geek. good thing I have this forum eh?

I have actually read a debate like this between some eggheads at Berkley (I think). If you do a google search, you might be able to find that discussion, I dunno. Bear in mind, I am not a physicist. My only areas ofstudies lie in the nuclear/engineering/electrical/mechanical stuff. I am stating this from memory of reading that ongoing discussion for a while, and what I drew from it that seemed to make sense to me.


Anyways, the gist of the discussion brought out several key points pertaining to making lightsabers:


- For a saber to do what it is supposed to (ie. act as a blade of energy) it would have to be actually a plane of energy. A plane of energy does not actually "cut" or "burn" through anything, although the heat generated by it's close proximity to the air around it would be immense, effectively making the blade "hot" enough to melt steel and more. What a plane of energy does is basically displace matter. Think of it like jumping your fat butt off of the high dive into the deepend of a pool. You displace water on your way down. When a plane of energy passes through a space inhabited by matter (for example, your arm) it displaces the matter exsisting in the exact point through which it passes...for all intents and purposes cutting it in twain then burning it from the heat generated by the air it passes through. A plane of energy cannot pass through another plane of energy. No, I do not know why, this was just something they all seemed to agree on.


- You cannot safely use magnetic containment. If Darth Vader comes at you with his evil red saber, you could throw a kitchen magnet at him and he's toast. Or so they said. I know from studying electromagnetic fields that they do react to each other, so it seems reasonable that a magnetic containment could be severly screwed up by another magnetic field, at least enough to stop containing whatever it is supposed to contain.


- To create plasma hot enough to perform it's function as a saber blade, you would need an immense amount of energy. It would also be extremely bright. We have some plasma torches where I work and they do not cut as fast as you would think through stainless steel, and to look at them you need welder's glasses. ...My question for this discussion, if you have plasma trapped inside a magnetic field, will the plasma interact with matter outside that field? Are you banking only on the intense heat? How will two magnetic fields containing plasma interact? Sounds like it could be messy...


Also, a side note, transformers hum because of electrical noise produced by alternating (AC) current cycling at 60 cycles per second in most cases causing the core of the transformer to physically move back and forth extremely fast, making a humming sound that the human ear can pick up. Higher and lower electrical frequencies produce different hums, some out of range of our hearing. If a plane of energy hums, it would have nothing to do with this at all. My guess would be it might but because of constant collisions of air molecules and the blade.


That's all I got on it. The discussion fizzled out when they all kind of concluded it is not possible with current technology (and most laaws of nature) but that it could be possible if more was known about certain aspects of nature, and that something like a saber on a very large scale (industrial use) could very well be dreamed up in the near future.

Call me a science nerd but here goes

By my speculations on this subject, i have come to the conclusion that it is, technically and scientifically, possible to create a real-life light saber. But of course, there are EXTREME restrictions. They are as follows:

1- It would take a very long time of the saber being activated for it to gain enough strength to act like a blade.

2- Since we currently know no way to bend light without affecting the physical world, it is nearly impossible to turn light around and "suck" it back into the lightsaber, as the SWG explanation shows. But, it IS possible to create an extremely fine mirror which extends as long as the blade is expected to be, REFLECTING rather than "sucking" back into the saber. After which, just like in the explanation, the light is reflected again INSIDE the saber, and through the lens again, re-focusing the beam of light/laser and amplifying its strength. Each time is passes through it would add to its power until the light becomes dense enough to affect the physical world by burning it away.

3- Sabers would turn on and off light a flashlight, not hum, and would certainly not go PPSSSSSSSHHHHEWWW when activated.

4- Sabers would travel through other sabers, not impact like a sword.

5- Sabers would burn through any object touched with no effort whatsoever. You can have it hang on a string and swing back and forth, and it will cut through steel. Light does not require work to move.

6- After each hit, a saber would lose some power because of the light reflected/absorbed by the object it impacted.

regarding #4 there....the little mirror that is extended as the reflector, would have to be attached to something that is attached to the hilt, so when your hypothetical sabers would collide, it would smack the mirror extension as they travel through each others beambending the thing the mirror was attached to, runing your saber. And putting someone's eye out.

The beam on a lightsaber isn't stated to be light energy: 'Using "frozen blaster" technology, a blade of pure energy is created. The beam can cut through almost anything solid, except another lightsaber blade, the material cortosis and other force fields, an alloy used in Magna Guards' electrostaves called phrik, superconductors, and Yuuzhan Vong amphistaffs, serpent-like creatures used as melee weapons that, when snapped rigid, generate their own force fields. Mandalorian iron is known to resist the effects of a lightsaber'.


'Once all the pieces are assembled, the Jedi uses the Force to meld them on a molecular or lower level, permitting unheard-of energy efficiency. Since you are talking about a HUGE release of energy from within the hilt of the saber, the chances are it would make a loud hum as it is activated and used. Think of a power transformer, are they silent? no.

With the use of magnetics and magnetic fields around the light, i believe it would be possible to create one that would NOT go through other sabers. And you could possibly make one. However...how you would power something like this, or go about finding how to create the magnetic field..well tahts another problem.


I think the power unit to the saber would look something like the Empire State Building in size with a 3ft antenna off the roof that is the saber. Because i dont know how you could power something like this in the size of a hilt.

I don't know if anyone here has seen a Gundam series before. And not that G Gundam/Gundam Wing/Gundam Seed/Gundam X crap. I'm talking REAL Gundam. Tomino's Gundam. The only Gundam that matters.

Anyway, the whole "science" of Gundam hinges on the Minovsky particle. It's a very rigid particle of matter than can withstand very high energy. Minovsky particles are scattered during combat to reduce the effectiveness of radar and force combats into visual range. But they also found another use. The engine of a Gundam or other mobile suit is a nuclear powerplant. The melee weapon of the Gundam (called the beam saber) is mounted in a socket that is directly connected to this powerplant. This allows for recharging the power cells in the handle of the beam saber.

The saber itself is very much like a lightsaber in Star Wars. Minovsky particles shoot up out of the hilt, and form an empty "blade." This space then fills up with plasma from the powerplant of the mobile suit itself. The resulting blade can slice through just about anything.

It's really a cool bit that Tomino throught up to explain why bam sabers could exist and why they'd be used in the first place (close-range battles). If you're into anime, check it out. Evenif you're not, and you're into sci-fi, give it a whirl. Very cool stuff.

actually, referring to my Star Wars official chronology. Early Jedi Did indeed wear a kinda Backpack that supplied energy to their sabers which were connected by a tether/powercord to the backpack. Essentially, the pack supplied all the energy, and the 'blade' came out of the handle, which i presume was a focusing mechanism.... So LS dont necssarily HAVE to start off as a self contained HANdle and Blade.

lol maybe it could be powered with an inductance rod just like those watches that charge as you move your arm. It would charge as they swing it in battle

Um, there is no way to be able to maintain a short, saber like length is there? I mean, it would go on for a while until it hit something.
