Thread: Current Server Instability

For those people who wonder "what the heck is the test server for if it's obviously not tested 'cause it causes crashe when you push it live..."

Star Wars Galaxies is a huge and complex system, likely with millions of lines of code in hundreds or thousands of files, all interacting with one another in different ways. There are very probably several development teams working on different aspects of the game at the same time, all doing things that affect different parts of the server and client applications. In the test server, they havea place where they can try out these bits of code, see how they interact with the system and get them ready for publish.

BUT, it's almost a given that the test server is NOT a perfect replication of the actual environment because it IS a test server. They are testing code while they are preparing other code for testing. The code under testing might work with, say, a slightly modified character object that someone tweaked to go along with a new chunk of combat code, but once they push it live, it doesn't work with the LIVE version of the character object. Or some such.Which theywouldn't know beforehand because the test server is quite probably NOT a perfect replecation of the live environments.

What would perhaps make more sense is to have a 'guinnea-pig' server which is a live box, but is the first one to have any given patch applied to it. If the patch goes smoothly, then all the others get patched as well. But until they have a process such as that, I think it irresponsible to blame them for not being able to forsee that their latest pubish is going to interact poorly with some obscure corner of older code on the live servers. Rather, blame them for not having a better push-to-live procedure which includes something like a staged release.

Guys remember where your posting before you hit the submit button, flaming and ranting and calling devs or others names does not solve anything.

Here is the latest update on the server situation.

--

Update: 4:18pm CST

Bria, Ahazi, Bloodfin, Chilastra, Chimarea, and Eclipse are all back up with the patch. We will be cycling Kauri and Corbantis so that they get the patch and do not have issues during prime time. We are currently evaluating the risk on all other servers to see if they will need to be brought down. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience and greatly appreciate your patience.

totally agree...

the game isn't stable 'cause there r so many bugs it just isn't normal..

instead of adding new things which do not add functionality to the game the game itself should be updated en made stable.

what does a new tattoo or holographic bubbles add to the game when there r daily thousands of bug-submissions sent?

And how much bugs are really solved?

I experience bugs for months now and now that many memebrs have submitted reports about them and nothing is done about it.

There is a Space-expansion on the way later this year when my experience is that 'En Empire Divided' isn't a full game yet.

Problems should first be solved before adding new (unneccessary) things to the game.

I actually pay for this game..the sad thing is...I really don't care anymore...lol

i know this '2-hour'-update is affecting all servers but my server (Eclypse) is affecting many, many bugs the last 6 months

plz introduce char transfers a.s.a.p so that these problems won't affect my playing times as this joke costs me my free day of gaming.

Alltho I have to admit you guys keep on trying to improve the gameplay and balance every month and well I appreciate that, I am still wondering what the test server is good for anyways. I am not claiming I have any clue of coding and stuff, but I find it highly remarkable how you guys are able to crash all the servers with an update that is supposed to be tested. Don't get me wrong i love this game, today even more than in the first weeks, since I remember this game without mounts/vehicles, items which have been bought disappearing from your inventory, ppl exploiting fpoints/money/xp, graphics glitches, armor bugs, being incapped in the cloner with no means to get up, n00b ch's running around with 4 pets at almost novice lvl, repairing vehicles by leaving them on planet, lost cash when bank tipping, ah well these are only some memories fro the good old days.

But still one can't say that the game isn't improving. Keep it up guys as long as you still have customers, the license bonus only get you half the way there. I would hate to see deserted cities on my server when other titles go gold. Still love the game and I won't leave it on my behalf, but currently I think you'll lose a whole lot of players with much more patch days like this.

Just my 2 cents,

blaim the locked gorath for this

I just posted this in Announcements. It looks like we won't have to revert any changes.

Update: 1:21pm CST

Here is the latest information on the current server instability we are experiencing.

The programmers believe they have found the cause and are working on a fix for the issue. Test Center will be (or soon will be) unavailable to players as they test the changes.

We are expecting that Bria, Ahazi, Bloodfin, Chilastra, Eclipse and Chimaera will be up and running with the new fixes within 3 hours.

Gorath is currently up and running but with limited players. It is not open for new player logins but is running internally with several hundred players.

After the fix is applied to Bria, Ahazi, Bloodfin, Chilastra, Eclipse and Chimaera and we verify everything is stabilized, all other servers will have to be brought down one at a time throughout the day to apply the fixes and restarted. There will be an in-game warning when the time comes for a particular server to be restarted so players will have ample time to get to a safe spot and logout. This restart will include Gorath.

We appreciate you patience and am working hard to get you back to playing as soon as we possibly can.

Take your time, do it right. The only thing I care about is am I still gaining merchant xp during the down time, as I am almost done mastering it.

I would to know has it been worth it? an update to image desgin profession takes the servers down all day? whats going to happen when there is a real major update? and shouldn't the great amount of lag be adressed first before doing anything else because that is was makes the game so hard to enjoy is the lag. and it's the one thing that is never adressed. I think the lag issue should be correct before any updates to any Profession are done, after all the lag issue is what is really taking away from the game.

I have to thank them for finding the problem so quick. This game does have bugs but so does every single online game ever made. EQ is how old? That still gets broke all the time. Whole zones crash. I am not going to even start with all the problems UO has. I have played many MMOs. It is the nature of the beast. Not to mention that half of their programmers are at E3. Some of you sound like you have never played anything but console games and this is your first MMO.

Hope the servers are fixed soon. I haven't had time to log in for *counts on fingers* five days!

Was looking forward to an evening of SWG. Guess I'll have to fire up one of the games I've been neglecting since I started playing SWG.

many programmers are at the E3, fine by me...

but, (and i agree with some posters here) the present problems should be addressed first before any risky new update.

the lag on Dantooine and Coronet (Eclypse-server)is still like hell...and i have the latest hardware and 3Gb memory...

items STILL disappear from my inventory, house and bank depositbox and lotsa bugs more...

they should be solved first before any update is done...

why not UNDO the ID-patch and re-apply it when it's stable?

I thought that that was the purpose of the Testcentre?
