I've taken to a pretty stock reply when they ask cost. My answer?

"The going rate is approximately 20k. If you are unable to pay that, it is very negotiable."

Most people cough up 20k without even blinking. One or two, who are obviously new chars can't pay, and I'm all good with that.

As a -customer- I am kinda offended when you -dont- charge for work done.

Time has value. The time that you are spending working on me, with my capricious changes, my change of stats on a regular basis and the time that you took to level up in your profession has a value.

Just because, as I have seen some people justify their lack of desire to pay entertainers, you have no material costs does not negate that you have a valuable commodity to sell, with expenses to work with. Especially with timers limiting the number of changes you can do over time.

-everyone- who provides a service should receive some type of recompense... and no, I do NOT could experience points in that recompense... when I go hunting for hides or meat or whatever for docs and tailors etc, I dont do it for free just because i get weapons or scouting experience...

Charge me a fee... let me know up front what it is... if I cannot afford it then I can either choose to spend time looking for a different ID or decide for myself if it is -worth- what you are asking... if its worth it, I have a magic box in every city that spews cash called a mission terminal that I can use to get more money for that stat migration or other change..

Just to add my two cents, I'm a Master ID on Eclipse, and I've found what works for me is to charge a set rate of 15k (sometimes 20k if I'm in a bad mood ) for stat migrations, and just ask for tips for everything else. Doing this I generally make more money doing standard ID, I tend to get told I do great work, and get big tips because of it. Every now and then there's a noob who tips me 1k for a 20 minute makeover.. but usually the next person in line makes up for it. I do however have compassion for newbies, and If I see a poor guy in peicemeal bone armor and I'm not busy I'll give them a free stat migrate, I just make sure to educate them on why we normally charge so much while they wait.

Exactly, Samtha. And, when I'm a "customer" to services, I really hate when people tell me to tip what I want. I want the fee and I want to make decisions based on that fee. In fact, I will admit that often times I feel uncomfortable when people tell me to tip what I want. I don't know if I'm being stingy, so I tend to overtip. And, in a way, that's taking advantage of my own personal guilt, if that makes any sense. I mean, these are goods and services. Set your price, compete, take part in the economy. Another reason that I have a set fee that I didn't mention before, is because I don't ever want people to have to go through any dilemma about if what they're paying me is appropriate or not. I tried the no set fee thing in the past, and I can't tell you how many people squeamishly ask me if what they're paying is appropriate. So, yes, for me, part of the reason I have a fee, is to keep people from having to go through that. This should all be based on economics and supply and demand, and the desire of the consumer to get the best possible deal. In any simulation, people who say "tip what you want" are basically taking away some of that economic enjoyment for me.

Maybe it's because I'm an accountant in real life, I dunno. But, economics within a game is an interesting, dynamic concept to me. And, I enjoy playing around and simulating economic models.

I mean, one of the reasons I stopped playing another game I used to play is because there was no economic dynamic involved. It was boring. I like "playing" with governments, and economies, and that's why I make the decisions I make in regards to personally deciding to always have a set fee. It's just more fun.

Exactly... you spend time learning the profession and time working with customers, some of whom are rude, some with unreasonable requests... I -want- your services and I -want- the ID's to keep working so I am perfectly willing to pay you for your time and patience with me...

I always like the "but I spent two days saving up for this armor and I don't have any money."

You can run missions for two days to save for a set of armor and are somehow unable to run missions for 20 minutes to be able to afford a migration to wear said armor.

I got 150K the other day when I said "whatever you think is fair". I figure that will cover a few bad tippers... lol

I have lately been charging 15k to those who appear to be able to afford it. I had too many folks tip poorly or not at all as well I typically stick to tips when doing ID appearance alterations, but I have been stiffed there as well *shrugs* I guess you'll get your cheapskates regardless of what your services are

20k in salon

40k if i get a tell and have to make a trip to the salon

Started a new character on another server recently, wanted to try something different, so i started with a scout, didnt take me long to change my mind, i decided i was goingrifleman ( never had aranged before, so i thought i'd give it a try)

Realised i need to change my stats for that, so i spend many hours bitchslapping dwarf nuna (crappy paying missions) managed to save up 25k. Went and found an ID, she fixed me up, was very polite, and we had a great 10 min convo while we waited, i asked how much (hoping my 25k was enough, knowing full well that im always happy with 20) and she replied with 2k.

Isaid "er.. you mean 20k yea"

She "no 2k is normally what i charge, is that too high you think?"

At this point i felt sick to my stomach,

Me" look hun, i know im newb, and this money took me 6 hours to earn, but to think of the time and effort youve spend mastering your skill to get yourself 200 credits per minute? thats retarded, charge 20k minimum"

She seemed somewhat dumbfounded and felt that this would somehow be ripping ppl off.

Point : Charge what you think your time is worth, If a 6 hour old character can afford 20k for a stat migrate, tell those idiots that i see day in and day out that walk it to your salon in full composite saying they cant afford to Get Stuffed. Dont feel bad at all, they are clearly trying to take advantage of you

The way I usually phrase it is, "Just pay me what you feel I'm worth."

It's a subtle change, but it takes the emphasis away from my skills, to me as a person, I find that way my tips are consistantly high. (One very nice person tipped me 30k for holoemotes and eye color changes)
