Thread: The Public Tents are hurting IDers

You poor thingI got lucky last night, the tents I visited (all but Vreni) all the ID'ers stood a little bit apart from each other and took customers as they arrived, taking turns, though often everyone was busy and if someone would arrive one of us would say, I can take you next. Noone was announcing their prices, that was all discussed privately as it should be when several of one profession are in one spot. It's the courteous thing to do.

Well perhaps it's not bad form, but it is irritating. I see one of your characters is a master chef. I'm sure you wouldn't care for it if someone stood outside your shop, or right next to your vendor and shouted "Free brandy for everyone!!!!"
I know I'de have a problem with someone standing outside my furniture shop spamming "FREE FURNITURE!!!! PST!!!!" then telling me "Hey, I'm just trying to get customers!"
No.. actually I'm the person who goes around giving out free food in starports. Wanna know why? Because I make certain batches of food with (gasp!) my shop's waypoint in the name instead of "Vasarian Brandy" it says "Time for a Refill? Taqueria Nahualli. Salanar, Naboo"
I attribute this to "marketing expenses" and you know what the real kicker is? It works! People LOVE free stuff. People will ALWAYS be more receptive to change, more accepting of new things and more willing to explore when you introduce something in a friendly, discreet and/or FREE medium. It's business. I think it's unfortunate that you find it irritating. I wish you understood that this game is all about PvP right down to the crafter side of it. You don't have to kill other crafter (evil thoughts... evil thoughts...) but you do have to compete with them just like any combat class. Perhaps it's time to start thinking like a competitive crafter in a competitive and dynamic environment?
Seriously.. why do you think you get the amazing Gisnu2000 when you buy a George Foreman grill? Or why you get a set of stickers and a tiger poster when you order a subscription to Zoobooks? Or why when you buy OxyClean you get an extra bucket for the price of one plus a spray bottle and scrubbing brush?
People figured out the "free stuff" trick ages ago.. get with the times.

Yes, but that is giving away free things WITH purchase. I've noticed that several image designers are advertising that they are giving away free holo emotes with each new hair color, etc. I don't know this girl personally, nor do I even play on her server. If she was offering free image designing as a one day only promotional thing, then that's good business. If not, then she's going to be unpopular indeed among other image designers.
I do see your point about standing in front of your shop and spamming that they're selling for free. I can understand that particular practice is bad form and very, very rude. However, we don't have a choice in the matter. We are not given player city versions of the ID tents so this point is moot. You have to share the same space. I don't know what I can offer any other recourse other than to move to another city. Of course you may find the same problem there. Maybe I was lucky I had better luck in Bestine than I did Theed.
All I can say is the novelty of this will wear off *very* soon. It happens with all revamped classes, I'm surprised we aren't all more acclimated to the "FOTM Rush". We all *know* that things are going to be wacky and unruly the week following a class revamp yet we're all still annoyed and caught off guard when the reality of it hits us.
*sigh*
Take care peoples!
This reply was in another thread - but that thread went *poof* ... Kwee: I think you are a GREAT correspondant! You do a stand up job, and that is what I see in the little time I have been in here.

I charged a big fat goose egg for anything I did. I really dont care about money in the ID prof. I mastered the thing Sunday before the mini publish so I could migrate guild mates stats for them. I like the new changes, and played with it all day yesterday. HAHA, made my char hot-pink (Mon-Cal) so he looks like a big peice of bubble gum.
But, I can not see an ID making a lot of money outta the changes. There will ALWAYS be an ID like me around who has more than 1 character and other sources for money and doesnt care to change someones hair real quick, or to give them holoemotes. Like someone said before, it costs me nothing in resources to do any of this - yeah, it took Skill Points, but so... Those skill points were spent by my choice - why charge someone for a choice I made? I dont factor in my skill points used when I price out Chef stuff... Same the time it took for me to master it...
Take care peoples!

Please understand that this is in no way meant to be insulting or degrading. Mastering a profession in order to provide service to your guild is known as "muling." While I have nothing against "mules" in general, keep in mind that your reasons for IDing are very different than most of our reasons. While we may be performing the same functions, you are doing so in order to assist your guild, one would expect knowing that they will assist you if necessary. Many of us ID because we love the profession, and love making people happier with their looks. We may not have guilds we can rely on to cover our expenses, no matter how small or large they may be. With that said, while I support your interest in helping your guild—I myself provide all tailoring and ID free to guild—providing those services free to the general public does a disservice to those IDs that need the money generated by those sessions to pay for housing, travel, et cetera. I would hope that you don't make a practice of providing free ID to the general public. (Please also note that I have always used a tip-based payment system for my ID and am not likely to stop that practice, since the only thing I would charge for—stat migration—I have no intention of offering as a service. But I certainly do not offer my services free of charge.)

Yeah, I can understand your point(s) there. And I respect anyone who chooses a profession to make money. The thing is, I can not really see how this profession is a viable source of income.
Well, I have not done much post-patch since I am waiting for things to settle down, but before then I have made about 1.5 million doing image design. It can make money if you put the effort into it and respect your customers.
