What function does the garage do? Is it just eye candy?
Its to park your vehicles in.
Business and survey were both mentioned and shot down, and thats good. these two have nothing to do with running a city. business is based on crafting skills, and survey on how much you mine(my old character was an artisan).
i believe that the politician profession should be a basic profession, but not a starting profession. now you may be saying "whats the difference?" the difference is that you cant start with the politician skill, but you dont have to do anything to learn it(skill-wise). all you have to do is go to a plitician trainer, pay them 100 credits, give up 15 skill points, and you have Novice Politician.
now the thing that will stop alot of people from becoming a politician would be that 15 skill point cost, and only the people who would really want to run would run
My two cents worth on who should be able to go into the politician class: ANYBODY.
Okay, at least require them to be a Master in their chosen profession. I mean in our society we have The Terminator running for the Guv of California, and an ex-actor and former governor of that same state was a two-term President. Anybody from any walk of life, and any level of education, subject to residency requirements, can be an elected official in any town, city, or state in our country, why should this world require anymore. It is an elected position, and if being a politician is the elite-elite you choose to go, why should taking that ladder require you be in only a select elite class.
Also, I think if Player cities are built around a PA that is aligned with an Imperial or Rebel Faction, then they should be open for attack, subject to limits set by the Devs of course. This is a civil war after all.
Ok its a good idea to have flat areas around your pa hall... but about the flatening land thing, it works, but it doesnt. Look at how many houses there are on any large server... you would just have one big flat planet. the houses should be able to CONNECT! not neccisarily (fcuk spelling) directly wall - to - wall connected, but like in the outskirts of most cities (in tatooine atleast) you see small houses connected by arches, or very close to eachother. and for the apartments... GREAT idea!!! they already have the outside modeld, just not the inside (im assuming). go to the jawa fortress, outside of bestine, or a few other places, and you will see these structures a little larger than a pa hall with 4 to 6 doors, i cant remember. those would be awsome to have in any city. each little room should have their own structure terminal, and anyone can walk into it, if the room is unoccupied, and select something from the radial menu such as "purchase room" and then they get an option "pay rent" or something. then they automatically get admin for that room, but the apartment admin can ban them / raise / lower rent. similar idea - malls... they would have the same exact idea, just a different layout, like one big hallway with rooms on either side with display windows.
Along the same line, I wouldn't hold my breath for things like placeable tiles or trees. The objects aren't static and thus have to be sent to the client. The more objects, the more things will lag down. Especially when several people will presumably be in town at once.
I think bridges and cafes or things along those lines are more resonable (ie objects that are larger).
I really don't mean to rain on anyone's parade
This sneak-peak gets my hopes up about mountable critters, so believe me I'm just as excited about player towns.
Player Cities at this point is a joke, a sick joke, try fixing the game instabilities first......
Ah I am too angry to bother explaining its obvious SWG are more interested in their toys than the large number of players having trouble with the game as it is, many barely able to stay on line long enough to do anything constructive.
WAKE UP DEVs the Engine need maintanence first!
Makers of AO never made an mmog before.....
Player cities are nice, but I tend to agree...fix what's broken first then add new bugs...errrr...features to be fixed later.
Speed up the introduction of mounts! It's a gamebreaker!
First, I gotta say I'm really excited about the upcoming player cities. To the devs, wonderful job so far. I know there have been problems, but all in all, things seem to be going rather well. To the last few posters on the board (aka whiners)...Do you have any clue what you are talking about??? For those who are posting in here about player mounts, I'd like to see them also, _but_it is a totally seperate project! Vehicles and mounts will serve to speed travel for those that do so a lot, but as of right now... you can still travel. Be patient, you will get your wish eventually. For those complaining to stop introducing new stuff till bugs are fixed... think about how a game like this is programed. There are numerous people working on a lot of different projects. *Read this part carefully* That means that while a number of people are fixing bugs and game issues, another group is working on new material. So...since you already have people addressing your issues, how about not complain about the other groups that are just doing their part to make this place better.
Now, since we have covered why people can patiently wait for vehicles, and everyone should be more informed on how programming works, let's move on to why player cities _should_ be one of the first things released. With the launch of this game, it has always been claimed that you can be whatever you want. Well myself and a good number of other people decided that we want to be leaders of a city full of actual players. Now I know what a lot of you are thinking..."Why the **** would anyone want to do that?" Newsflash!!!! Some people are not interested in the mindless hack-n-slash/ blow everything up gameplay. We tend to be more person-person based, and want to benefit the community as a whole, rather than personal gain oriented. Now, since there are already tons of avenues for the fighters, how about you allow the rest of to get something we have been waiting for.
