Just wanted to reply and say that this post is really, really awesome.
I read almost all of it and skimmed the rest because I am short on time right now, but anyways it was great and an enjoyable read! I will have to remember to use some of it.

Nice to see a post about helping people out instead of crying about mechanics. As a sort-of noob, I can't find good solid information on less tangible help like finding like-minded (and aged) players, or finding the 'best' server, ie, some servers seem more bent toward pvp, some are imp-heavy or vice versa.
I'm currently playing on several servers, and would like to set roots down when I find people a little older, and not so into the buff/dantooine thing, not so into getting XP at the cost of fun.
To contribute to the thread: Tell noobs to ignore the effing manual, that out-of-date thing does more harm than good.

Another thing I forgot to add to help noobs: when you ask what they (we) are working towards, don't reply with 'they suck'. I've been talked out of many professions at first due to this. I now say, who cares, I like making droids, and I am working toward it, who cares if 'they suck'.
Also, positivity goes a long way. Thorns and all, I am still entertained by this game. there's way too much crying about broken this and nerfed that. The forums especially are full of hateful posts and unhelpful comments.

Well... they should read it but not expect anything from it. A lot of questions asked could be answered by reading the manual, but I agree that it does foster some misconceptions about how things are supposed to be.
A better recommendation would be to have them consult the in-game "Holocron" for help, it's easier to keep that up-to-date and relevant.

Ask them what they professions they want to do then tell them the pros and cons of those professions. Explain to them the customer service and how it works. Explain to them combat system and how it works. So they said they want to become Jedi. LOL Explain to them how to become force sensitive them point them to these wacked boards. Then tell them they have 30 days free at least. Master TK in a week maybe two. Tell them that they only need certain weapons to grind up with. VK, Curved Sword, 2hand Curved, DL44, FWG5 etc.. Tell them about the composite and doctors buffs, and Canape, Brandy and Ahrissa(sp?) Once they hit skill box 4 in something, havd armor, buffs and food, Show them the money payouts that you can get in a solo group at mining outpost on Dantooine.
Tell them that if they sit down, they will slide across the floor.. Im all about the truth and to keep nothing away from inquiring individuals. Not just how to do but to what to expect.

The manual is sorely out of date. i bought SWG last year, and the manual had holes then. I bought a 2nd copy last week, and the printed manual is the exact same. So much has changed that information is either missing (speeders etc), erroneous (how to level for BH), and /or misleading (effectiveness of professions like post-nerf CH, no more starting cities other than Mos Eisley).
I also have the prima guide, and yet I still surf the fan sites for the 'real' information on how to play this game.
It's just a shame when someone logs in expecting certain things from the game based on printed information only to find "it don't work llike that" in game.

I'm not new to SW, though. I've been RP SW for years now, but just got the game.
I'm on shadowfire, and so far, I've met more people there who are there to have fun than grinding to jedi.
Though I admit, I've run into far too many of those as well.
Thank you so much for this thread. I've been sifting through the boards recently, trying to get the pearls. This is one of them.

Or tell the newbie to get buffed and become a unstoppable monster and solo almost anything in game, even at their newbie level. GG SWG, GG.
