I did as the original instructions recommended and it works fairly well. Kiond of chokes up if I try to do too much (Theed and Coronet are bad enough with one instance running) but it helps when I need AP or trading from one account to another.
P4 3.0 GHz HT, 1 GB DDR-400, Radeon 9800 Pro. I never thought I'd say this for a machine that didn't even exist when the game came out, but I think I need more RAM

This was within the same user account on Windows XP Pro, no problems with multiple instances or the like.Then, it all went wrong, as the good things in life often do...Something changed on my machine, and I now get a DirectX error - something along the lines of "DirectX could not initialize" ... sorry to be vague, but the exact wording escapes me.I believe, and it is only a belief - that this could be down to either XP SP2, or new Video drivers. I have a Matrox Parhelia 128Mb graphics board.Has anyone else seen a DirectX related problem?
i've seen that 'DirectX could not initialize' error a few times now, and it seems to happen when i try to alt-tab and start the 2nd instance of swg while the 1st is still loading, OR when i alt-tab from the 2nd back to the 1st while the 2nd is still loading. as long as i let each copy load fully to where i can see/move my toon before i alt-tab, it usually works perfectly .. except in very populated cities, then it lags/crashes.
the game itself allows you to have more than 1 instance running at a time, but the patching program/loader does not seem to.
fwiw, i've had 3 copies of swg running at one time, using the same Windows user login and same SWG folder. the only change i made to my swg installation was adding/editing the file "user.cfg" with the following 2 lines:
[SwgClient]
allowMultipleInstances=true
hope this helps..

Would this work with the second character opened after the Force Sensitive Quest? Just asking so I will know when I would need it in about 8 months

It won't let you run two instances of the same account.
You might be able to log in but both will be disconnected within 10-15 minutes.
It's intended to allow two different accounts to log in at once.

yea thats how I do, but ***k, holy lag batman, I cant take my 2 chars to a populated city, the lag would last for 40mins and then finally would discount me lol. True story.

It works for me, but there is more you should put into the file ....
[SwgClient]
allowMultipleInstances=true
allowMultipleInstances=true
Also, I get it to work by waiting till the first client fully loads before you load the second. Use Ctrl-Esc to get to the desktop, if your mouse keeps popping up into the upper right corner of the desktop just quickly click on an icon and you are in control again.
I doubt it would ever be against the use agreement, because, its not really useful except for transfering stuff, having one character teach another (Something you could do with two computers anyway), or other stuff. It would not really be very helpful for going on hunts or other stuff where you might need to be in control of both characters or situations where you would need toswitch between characters its not that easy. I don't like exploits, and there is one thing about this, I could have one character tumbling for me while I heal em. Not that I'm giving anything away, as it would be the FIRST thing anyone trying to make a doctor would think of doing that has even half a braincell.
Onegotcha about this method tho ....
New mail received by one character is also received by the second character. This might be allieviated IF you installed both games into two different directories. I suspect that if you did this, you would not need the user.cfg file at all but see warning below ....
To the one asking about running two EQ's at the same time, you might try this, installing two different copies of the game into different directories.
Warning, I'm not sure how well this would be handled by the registry, I would be willing to bet that there would be places of conflict where there would be only one key, but two values to put there, I would backup or create a restore point before ever installing the second copy.

I have the same system as you but with 2 Gb of RAM. The problem I have is that 5 minutes into it my entire computer crashes. I can't figure out what's causing the crashes.

Do you have two separate accounts, or are you trying to log on two characters on the same account?
If you are trying to log the MBH and Jedi in your sig, chances are they are both on the same account - and that would explain the crash. If not, I'm stumped.

No, two separate accounts. The Jedi and MBH are on different accounts. (How's that for a split personality? :smileyvery-happy
I can't figure outwhy itcrashes. I am running both at the highest resolution, 1280 x 1024, so maybe it's too taxing for my video card? I should have enough RAM to run both at the same time but maybe the 128 Mb on the video card isn't enough?

can someone explain this set-up a little more... I have windows XP and would rather go this way rather than altering the SWG files.

The easiest way for me to play both accounts at once, was to create another WindowsXP account and run each of my toons from one of the XP accounts.
Hope this helps,
Will I not lose the connection to the web when I switch users ?

Well, I tried lowering the resolution but still have the same problem so that's obviously not the issue.
Sigh. I guess I'm just not destined to have this work.
